MOMO Racing Wheel Reliability - Disappointed!

by bertr » Tue, 11 Feb 2003 06:15:40

Today, my barely-6-week-old MOMO Racing Wheel's right-hand paddle
shifter died.  Perfect timing -- just 2 weeks or so after the time
period expired when I could have returned it to CompUSA.  I love the
feel of the wheel but, needless to say, I'm not happy with its
reliability.

Out of curiousity, has anyone else experienced any hardware failures
with this wheel?  (Note: This is the MOMO Racing, not MOMO Force.  This
wheel does _not_ have the leather wrapped around it.)

Thanks!

A well-known, and well-reported problem. If you want to have a go at fixing
it yourself, here's a link, but it looks darn fiddly.
Seems to have been very badly designed, I've had the same problem with mine
too.

You're not the only one!

Have a look at this thread, details the problem nicely:

Yea, same thing exactly.  Right shifter paddle began to either double up the
click or not click at all.  I was able to return is for another as it was
under 30 days.  Now I'm scared cause the 2nd one is over 30 days now..

I had the little power socket break off inside - you know, the thing you
plug the power cord into the back of the wheel? It broke off it's mount or
something and was just rattling around inside the case.

Yep, my right paddle failed as well. 2 week old wheel w/ about 3 or 4
hours usage. Replaced with a new wheel - next time it fails I'll fix
it using the procedure linked in the previous responses.

Does warranty cover this kind of problem?

I would think that it does, since the wheel comes with a one-year warranty.
But who knows how long you have to wait for a replacement?  I got league
races, y'know......   8-)

Yes and no.  If you can't take it to the retailor, they will have you
send it in for a replacement.  They do NOT repair the Momo's and they do
NOT have spares.  The trouble is, they quit making Momo's and probably
don't have a supply left to send the exact wheel back to you.  One user
here got a newer Momo Racing(cheaper) wheel in return.  He had to really
dig for get another Momo force back.

Probably in this case it is better to by MS Sidewinder FF Wheel?
It is in the same price range.

I absolutely think so.

Mine is like 3 years old, and is just now starting to show a tad bit of age.
Nothing major, just an intermittent squeak in the shaft and a sticky left
shifter from time to time.  It's been beat to death and has never really
failed me.
