The reason most people have the same trouble your having is the draft. It takes
aways most setup differences. So qualifying is where you see who can truly
setup a car. Anyone can draft, nothing personal :)
And it's not just the setup, it's the line, and how smooth you are with it. And
trust me, less people know 'smooth' than those who can setup a car. :) I once
spent 16 hours with a very good driver practicing for the TSW, at least as good
a driver as me, if not better, on trying to improve his line in a q run at
Daytona, with no luck whatsoever. This was not some yokel. But he could not
come within 2 tenths of my time with the same setup. I went over to his house
and sat behind his wheel and bettered his time (but not mine).
fwiw, I learned along time ago that sitting on the pole at a restrictor plate
race was just asking to get freight trained. It's braggin rights only.
Having said that, your best chance to qualify up front is to get someone already
there to hand you their setup, AND show you their line. Use the same equipment
as them and you will still have to work to match their time.
Considering all the different tracks where qualifying is more important, I would
not waste my seat time on dialing in a q run at Dega or Tona.
Not the answers your looking for I'm sure, just trying to ease your pain :)
