W98 to W2k??

by GTX_SlotCa » Sat, 02 Nov 2002 10:30:02

I've been using W2000 at work for the past couple months and I kind of like
it. I haven't been getting any email lately about W2k problems with games
and hardware (it's all about XP now), so I wonder if the compatibility
problems are fixed, or have the same people just gone to XP?
I know 2000 was never meant to be a game  OS, but have the problems been
worked out. I'm considering using it at home, too.

W98 to W2k??

I dual boot...Win2K is an awesome OS. But 98 or ME are king when it comes to
***. Also have a couple expensive controllers (CH Products HOTAS with a
Force FX) and a Sidewinder FF that are not compatible with 2K/XP.

You will also find that sound is much better handled in 9X.

I prefer Windows 3.1 even better sound. I would suggest reformatting and going with a real
OS  Windows 3.1 much better *** OS and like I said better sound. I found if you take
the wires from the speakers and attach them to the left two outer pins of you cpu then attach
your CPU to your motherboard it improves sound greatly.

People have just gone to XP. Since XP has replaced W9x, a lot of people have
gone to XP, not only the few weirdoes like myself that insisted on running
NT 4.0 at home.  XP is NT ver 5.1 while W2k is NT ver 5.0.
There are probably slightly more incompatibility issues with W2k because
it's regarded a corporate OS, and they don't bother fixing incompatibility
issues for the few who runs games on it. But most issues will be solved,
because when the gamedevelopers fixes XP issues, it will most likely also
fix the same thing on W2k. And if MS fixes releases an compatibility patch,
it's easy to port the fixes to W2k, and hopefully they release the same or
similar patch a few weeks or months later for W2k.
I can see that there are reasons for choosing W98 over XP for ***, but I
really can't see there are any for choosing W2k over XP, whether it's for
*** or not.

Some Call Me TimJust try running Windows 3.11 on gigahertz pc, thats what
you call fast!
I've been using Win2K as game pc since it came out. I quickly gave up on
dualbooting to win98se as there was no real point, as long as you've got
drivers for your hardware you should be ok and that applies to WinXP too. I
can't really think of any games I haven't managed to get working on win2k,
some of them just need a simple work around. The only game that pisses me
off a little I NFSP 2000 which works fine apart from I don't get full FF
effects :-(
I've even magaged to get more old dos games working in Win2k than I could in
Win98 or ME.

You might as well go for XP as it really is only win2k with knobs on. Word
of warning though, don't touch Home edition go for PRO.

W98 to W2k??

by GTX_SlotCa » Sun, 03 Nov 2002 00:30:10

Well, except that I still get a lot of email about XP problems, I already
own W2k Pro (installed at work, now), I like to run the same OS on my home
computer and my kids' computer (makes life easier) and I'd have to buy 2
copies of XP to do that, and finally, I switch CPUs, memory and motherboards
often for testing, and I'd probably have hassles with XP registration.
Maybe XP is in my future, but I'm not ready for it right now.

W98 to W2k??

Visit www.tomshardware.com.  They recently did a special on precisely this
subject.

And the old wives-tale that games run faster on 98 than 2K/XP was pretty
well demolished.

There ARE still compatibility problems, but since XP was released it's
become less and less of an issue.

W98 to W2k??

Been  running XP since the early betas, had a few problems back then.
Have not had a single problem or issue with XP since I purchased  retail.
IMO its the best thing to come of Redmond yet, and I've thrown everything
at it hardware and software. None of the registration or compatibility issues have materialized.
I guess one could wait to use XP but wait much longer and XP will be outdated.
Should not be too much of a problem now with W2K with all the XP drivers available
which most can also be used in W2K, but.......... why?

W98 to W2k??

by Luke Phillip » Sun, 03 Nov 2002 12:56:20

I dont see why people always bag the shit out of MS OS's when they first
come out, i upgraded to xp and the only games i have had trouble with are
Viper racing and Carmageddon 2, all of which i got going. Even Burnout PCE
that is very much a DOS game runs fine, W2k on the other hand will be worse
for compatability than XP is. If you really insist go for a dual boot, at
first i always used 98 for games, but in the end i even got better
framerates with XP once the drivers improved so there was no need for 98 and
is now scrapped.

        W2K works fine for me.  GPL, NASCAR2002, F12002.   It's a real
pleasure after the crashes of W98.
