GPL mentor program idea

Greetings all,

I've got a crazy idea. What if we setup GPL mentor program,
so the mentor will have a few students who are 1-2 seconds
slower than him/her in average. At the same time mentors will
also have their own mentors from the faster drivers.
Of course, it will leave some people (for example Greger Huttu)
without a mentor, but most will be able to find a mentor.

Mentor will typically review students recorded laps and
will point out mistakes, give general driving advices and
answer questions. Some individual may even try to give
online lessons using VROC.

So hopefully it will probably improve driving skills of everybody.

Considering good will of many peoples here in helping other
drivers I believe this program may have enough support.

I would like to see your comments and opinions.

I wish GPL had ghost cars like TOCA and that one could download the driver
of interest and follow him/her around the track.

Sadly Fester,  St Eldred is sooooo far much faster than me that I'd be
lucky to even see his tailpipe after a turn or two....see what I mean?

You can do that in replays at least with GPLSpyGirl.

ISTM that the easiest way to help someone is to use one of those voice
over the net things and for the mentor to watch his "pupils"
hotlapping/racing whatever. I think half an hour of live interaction would
probably be worth a month or three in exchanged replays and emails.

My modem connection's never really been happy with any voice comms I've
tried, but these days there are plenty of people with the bandwidth to
host a small closed session and chat to one or two "pupils".

Yes, but imagine what it'd be like to be able to race against your fastest
lap. I might actually get my Ring time down a bit if I had a ghost car
there constantly to tell me how I was doing. I've tried a big cooking
timer on top of the monitor, but it's not as painless as a ghost car would
be.

It's a feature I always hoped would be added to GPL. I still have my $25
:-)

In the Danish GPL League we have some teams that span divisions. On our
team we do one-on-one coaching sessions using VROC and the regular chat
feature. It can be very helpful but the coach must remember not to
"overcoach" as the student has to read whilst driving. Usually one or
two pointers per lap can do the trick.

Right now we are between seasons which theoretically should leave lots
of time for practicing. :-)
