I sent this to ratbag, so it may disappear in a patch.

Personally, if _I_ was the sponsor, you'd get paid AFTER the
race, or a clause that you'd have to refund if you didn't
start the race.

    IIRC, the bonus is an APPEARANCE bonus: you show; you get paid.
