but every time I have tried multiplayer there is SERIOUS lag...
Is it always that way, or is it just a matter of me getting with some people
with good connections?
I am on DSL by the way.

I think the common concensus is that F1 2k2 multiplayer is rather poor, due
to high sensitivity to latency. That said, if "pings" are low enough,
reportedly, it works.
It's competition, GP4, is playable for up to 3 players with equal machinery
if latency is less than 30ms now aparently, so that's a bit of an
improvement too.
For the online simmer it's still either GPL or N2k2, I'm afraid. Both
featuring a dedicated server option working well for up to 19 and 42 players
respectively (or as many as bandwidth will allow) and up to about 450ms
latency if quality/throughput is good.

<sigh>
Online depends on two things.....
Does the server sit on a comercial pipe?
Does everyone connected have broadband?
if you can answer yes to both of those then you have a pretty good chance of
lag free racing. If a dial-up joins it will bring it down for everyone. If
the server host has a home cable line, most likely he won't be able to host
more than two before he overloads the line. I've seen as little as three
drivers play like ***and about 13 run smooth as glass. Host must have a
big connection for anything more than 4 users.

You'e forgeting Nascar Heat. It has great mulitplayer, and some really
good mods. The FF2000 mod is fantastic.

I stand corrected.
