ABC Sports Indy Racing: Road to the Indianapolis 500 is a promising racing
game despite its excessively long name. It's the only PC game sanctioned by
the Indy Racing League (IRL), and offers eight IRL tracks plus four feeder
tracks. The team building the game describes it as "a scalable sim."
Drivers can compete in either Midget, Sprint, Silver Crown, or Indy cars
with either one of the two controversial engines (Aurora or Infiniti). The
choice of views includes inside and behind the car, as well as the classic
arcade positioning.
In keeping with ABC Interactive's cross-promotional strategy, the voices
and face of ABC Sports racing are sprinkled throughout. Like the football
titles, the Indy game supports Direct3D but also has direct support for
graphics accelerator cards based on the 3Dfx chip set (an auto-detect
feature is planned, but not yet implemented). Perhaps the biggest obstacle
the team must get over before race day is providing multiplayer support for
up to eight over the Internet. That's the team's goal. Alas, at press time
this Indy title only supported single-player races.
