Momo vs. BDR Sim Pro

by cgenn2 » Fri, 10 May 2002 02:13:45

I'm looking to get a new wheel and was wonder what to get. It's between the
Logitech Momo wheel and the BDR Sim Pro. Pedals are not an issue because I
have a set of TSW pedals. Any comments?

Thanks,

Chris G

I can't comment on the Momo as I've never seen one, let alone used one.

The BRD Sim Pro however is another matter, and I don't think I'll ever
regret buying it, I had very briefly seen someones BRD pedals before buying,
so expected a better than usual build quality, but was not sure quite what
to expect, and had the usual post-ordering thoughts of "Oh my god I've spent
HOW MUCH on a wheel?" and awaited it's arrival with both anticipation & at
times, second thoughts.

Those "second  thoughts" immediately disappeared very quickly when they
arrived & I opened the box, the build quality was incerdible, with not a
piece of plastic anywhere in sight (Other than the mounting plate, more on
that later), and not the usual thing you would expect from a PC peripheral,
in fact I thought, and still think, that the wheel & pedals are what I would
expect to see on a full, professional simulator designed for daily use and
abuse.

With the wheel the action is smooth,  with the centering spring strong but
not over the top, quick opposite lock & corrections are a doddle, and in
both GPL & Nascar 2002 I found alot more confidence in quick response than
my previous wheels (Ferrari FF's). The one thing I did not like was the
plastic under-monitor mounting plate, the wheel does not come with a clamp,
but rather 3 oversized thumbscrews attach it to a baseplate that is supposed
to sit underneath your monitor. I found that this was insufficient as my
monitor is quite light & I'm heavy handed - also the baseplate 'lifts' the
wheel about 1.5cm of the desk, and as the wheel is angled at 35-40 degrees
or so this made the wheel uncomfortably high for me, also stability was an
issue, so I discarded the baseplate and drilled 3 holes in my desk and
screwed the wheel via the thumbscrews directly to my desk, now it's as solid
as a rock & at the right height for me.

Although your not interested in the the pedals, for the benefit of other
these show the same level of build quality as the wheel, with a different
range of movement for the accel & brake (Deeper, lighter on the accel, More
resistance & less travel on the brake) with the brake pedal having a
generous bump-*** making progressive braking a piece of cake.

I heartily recommend that anyone considering a top-of-the-line non-FF wheel
to take a look at a BRD if possible.

I agree with Vennt's assessment of the BRD Sim wheel, I have a Sim Classic
BTW. Also I'd like to add that it is as well built on the inside as on the
outside. Yesterday I took mine apart to fit a USB wiring loom. The quality
of the internal components is as good as the external ones.

I've also bought a set of the Speed7 pedals. I haven't had much time to use
them yet but they are also an incredible piece of engineering. The build
quality is even better than the wheel.

It was your review & various comments on VROC that sold me on the wheel, the
word of mouth reputation that BRD have is quite strong.

Hopefully I'm going to try & use it to stay in front of you in one of the
RASCAR races *grin*
(Slim hope)

Indeed.   You cant get even a decent wheel and pedal setup for less than
220 from them really - and whilst they are very good - I CAN NOT see 200+
of engineering there I'm affraid.

The speed 7 pedals even more so.

ripped off like I was.
