Is it TOO REAL ???!!!

by Oliver Simo » Sat, 16 Dec 1995 04:00:00

I am speaking about Nascar, ICR, ICR2.  First I must say that I love
everything that Papyras has produced so far.  There are some bugs in
ICR2, but I can live with them.  The games offer realism and
excitment, and I will be a fan for ever.

Now, we are computer players, right ?  Well, why should we have to
wait for the yellow flags ?.  There should be some kind of automatic
pilot for the yellows.  What a perfect time to get a drink or
something.  I want to race realistically, this means with yellow
flags, but I don't think it is fun to sit there for 3 to 5 minutes
while I circulate the track at 70mph or so trying not to take people
out with my frustration.

What do you all think about this ?  Please post it here, so that the
people in charge of the sims can see the feedback.  This feature
should be switchable, so that the realism fans will not complain.

Pausing during a Caution works well for me :)  But hey, NASCAR drivers
really drink when they drive, with those tubes and all!  So... I just
leave my A&W Root Beer mug handy when I race my A&W Root Beer Ford
Thunderbird! grin!

hmmm, sounds like a neat feature for those that want to use it.
Personally, I'd leave it "off"...

Rick,

I like the realism of the yellows on, but would be highly in favor of a
way to accelarate the yellows after the pit stops.  This could be togled
on for when one is in the mood to drive 70 off of when your in a hurry to
go green.  The ideal thing would be to accelarte to the one lap to green
sign.

I'm sure that the real NASCAR drivers go through some of the same emotions,
and I find it adds to the flavor of the game, myself. That said, an
"accelerate" key that gets you to the "One lap until green" message would
be a nice feature when you're on a limited time budget. I spent two hours
one night trying to finish a 30% race at Talladega where there were more
caution laps than green flag laps and I would have probably used the
feature in that case.

I fully agree with you.  Waiting 3 or 4 laps to start racing again after
a yellow flag is rediculous.  A switch sounds good.

THIS ONE DID NOT WORK IN MODEM PLAY. PLEASE MAKE A FIX FOR IT!

Think about it this way: Would you rather lose ground at yellow flag speeds
or green flag speeds. On an oval track, you'll probably be lapped at least
once if you pit during green flag racing. Under yellow, you can usually
stay on the same lap, though you'll end up at the back of the pack.
Sometimes, you can't avoid green flag stops, but I usually try to stretch
it until the leaders have all come in. You don't want to get lapped on a
green flag stop, then have a yellow flag come out and give the leaders an
opportunity to pit under yellow.

You should nearly always pit as early as possible on a yellow, since the
first one out of the pits leads all of the pitted cars in the caution line.
If everyone pits, and you're the first out, you'll end up leading the
entire caution line! The exception to this rule is that you might want to
delay pitting if you think it will allow you to stretch your fuel to the
end of the race. I've never been close enough to try this strategy, and
there's always the risk of having to head in for a pit stop when the "One
Lap Until Green" comes out.

It is a good idea and a much needed option.

I'm just a dumb F1 fan and don't know much about all this Indy and NASCAR
racing. I understand this yellow flag business but I don't know what the goot
tactics behind it are? Is it a good/bad idea to pit when you're on a yellow?
When are "good" times to pit?

Thanks,
Jamie

Why stop with just a caution lap accelerator?  We could save time
running the race with a button that would have the computer drive
our car and win every time.

For the humor impaired, this is a JOKE!!!

Generally Yellows are the best time to pit, because under yellow
the cars on the track are only running at about 90 to 100 mph.  Green
flags speeds can be much higher.  Therefore you lose much less track
posisition by pitting under yellow, and since you can bunch up before the
restart, you may actually gain some on the leaders.

You have confused me Oliver.   In one breath you have praised Papyrus
for the realism of their simulations and in the next you want an
'arcade game feature' incorporated.   If you do not like the yellow
flag periods then do your very best not to cause them.  :-)

I think Papryus should concentrate first on eliminating the bugs that
are being reported in this forum.   What were their beta testers doing
all this time?   I would like to apply for the job for the next
product.

Craig.

Well, so much for the gamers quest for realism !!
