I use an external 56k V.90 modem (set at 24k) dialed into my local
ISP. You'll find local ISPs are generally better quality connections
than big national ISPs.
Are the disconnects when you are active (transfering data) or
during a lull? If it's when you are inactive make sure your DUN
and/or MSIE are set to *not* "disconnect automatically after xx
minutes". Also, your ISP may disconnect you if inactive for a length
of time.
If it's when you are transfering data, it may be the ISP or maybe
the phone company. I've had a unique problem the last few months
where my modem would go "on hook" by itself (the "off hook" light will
go out, but it still thinks its got a 56k connection, even though no
data can be transferred). The only way to fix it is to shut down the
modem and redial. Luckily, that doesn't seem to happen during driving
sessions. It's happened with two different ISPs, so I think the
problem is elsewhere.

a motor car and racing would not exist as a sport." -- Jim Clark
