Hi Ruud,
First time I tried racer in a while. Absolutely brilliant going around
Carlswood in an Evo. I think I actually am using the pacekja values from my
sim (as I was using the pacekja viewer to get some nice curves - it happened
to be the evo). It felt really good indeed. Keep up the good work. Looks
like I am going to have to get a parhelia some time soon, I cant be left
behind :D
Glad racer is getting some of the recognition it deserves :)
All the best,

Flame warRacer v0.5.0 beta 5 released and its physics debated
After Ruud van Gaal released Racer v0.5.0 beta 5, Ashley McConnell praised it while Kevin Webb called the default car's physics poor and struggled with his TSW wheel. Regulars defended the free one-man project's Pacejka tyre model and suggested better cars and a camber bug workaround. Van Gaal explained the network connection attempts came from its client/server design.

works fine with my tsw2 in split axis mode. Rather than crying
"worthless" for a bit of software you can download for free, how
about describing your problem in more detail? what doesn't
work? steering? throttle? brake? buttons?

period. Wheel, pedals, shifter. In the controller test utility axis data
shows wheel and pedal action but nothing in the game. I did try some
different controller choices and got as far as being able to back up. With
my bracke. hehe That's about it. No problem, it would only be for goofs
anyway. I cycled through the views and didn't see a cockpit mode. Is there
a way to get inside the car? As a game or simulation, it truely would be a
worthless endeavor without it from my perspective.

Anyway, if you still want to try it, are you sure your wheel is using the
correct ID in the INI? If you have a joystick too it might be on the
"normal" id, and your wheel on another?
...or is it so that you didn't write your own ini?

Trailbraking reduces weight on the rear tires. Makes sense to me that it
should kick the rear out if you push it into the corner too hard.

It includes lan multiplayer :-)
Anyway, the physics is actually very good.
The thing is that it uses a very advanced formula from someone named Pacejka
to calculate the tire-grip, which requires a lot of constants as input. This
is the same formula and values real tire makers use to measure performance
of a tire.
The problem for us right now is that getting good values for the pacejka is
difficult ;-)
The tiremakers keep their data secret.
There is a guy named Jim Seamus, which is a guru at creating good ini's for
the racer cars.
I'm simply spoiled by his last masterpiece I guess...
As for the spinning on the nose thing,
Racer isn't that polished yet, that it deals with extreme values in a nicely
fashion.
If a formula gets an extreme input the result might sometimes be nasty.
This is usually not a big problem, just as long as you dont "fall of the
track" or hit a wall very hard.
I really like racer. I just thought that the car was a little to snappy in
it's handling.
Probably an ini-thing.
Beers and cheers,
Carl

Evidently nothing. The Racer physics model is superb - as is Ruud's efforts

Outside of Papy - this title has the best phsyics out there.
Sure - they're buggy - but they're also free, developed by one guy on his

Think you'll find I am an entirely reasonable fellow with people who are
also reasonable. You are the sort of person who would get a ferrari but
complain that that it didnt have a radio.
Its "IN DEVELOPMENT" which means you are going to have to do a little
tweaking to get it feeling right. If you simply download a decent car for
it, you'll notice the world of difference. The ferrari P4's data is a
little off IMO. I tried strats Mitsubishi Evo and had a great driving
experience. I think what ruud has done is fantastic and its just getting
better all the time. Constructive comments are welcome (I am sure), but the

There's the problem. Racer tries to bind to an IP address on
an interface so it can serve multiplayer races, that's why your
DSL is coming up, trying to provide said IP address. While
multiplayer isn't really functional in the current beta, the
code is still there.
If you have LAN, np, the IP is already there; if you haven't
and have auto-dialing set, it will dial out.
All of this has nothing to do with spyware. On Linux and most
other unices, you always have the "local" interface configured
on the IP address 127.0.0.1 (loopback, localhost), so no
dialout is necessary. Under windows of course this is a
different story.
About the fan-boy thing: You might be correct (and so is Kevin)
that some of us feel pretty strongly about the "Racer" project,
and quite a few of us have put voluntary work into it just to
see racer advance.
So, I'd rather not wander into this newsgroup calling it
"worthless" just because your TSW doesn't work out of the box,
or you might invoke some rather strong opinions and replies.[1]
Had Kevin asked for help in a slightly more polite manner, he
would have received just that; help. As it stands, how many
commercial racing sims are out there in which your steering
device (non mainstream like the TSW2 is) worked out of the box?
Papy comes to mind, Viper racing. Most of the others require
tweaking.

Actually Ashley you have absolutely no fuckin idea what type of person I am

You do indeed.
You do not, however, have the right to label the whole project as a joke,
when if could have been bothered to spend 15 minutes downloading and trying
some of the other cars out there ( Quicksilver, anything from Stekki, the
McLaren F1 roadcar's quite good - check www.racer-xtreme.com if you can be
bothered) then you would realise that Racer's physics are NOT a joke, and
that, unfortunately, the P4 doesnt demonstrate them well.
If you are prepared to take the time to actually give it a chance - and
still label it crap - then that's your opinion and you're entitled to it -
however wrong a great number of people would consider that to be.
To label it crap without frankly trying - is NOT a fair thing to do. That
was my gripe with you.

Typical, elitest usenet behavior though unfortunately. Add to that this

Hi rrevved,
The P4 ini is not very good, it was the first one developed for Racer IIRC.
Jim Seamus made one that's a lot better and lets you really rip around quite a
bit more aggressively. Might be worth a shot for you. As for the bang-zoom
into the sky thing, that's a seperate issue from the vehicle dynamics really
(not that anyone would care ;-)).

Doug
I have cycled through the driving views. Is there a way to get inside the
cockpit? Roof cam, hood cam etc with guages but nothing in the cockpit. Is
there a cockpit view? If so, please enlighten me and I would reconsider
after testing. If not, then there is no reasonable argument for Racer being
a simulation of anything. Pure arcade.

Try a different car. Some have VERY immersive cockpit views with full guages,
steering wheels, etc. etc. I believe the Nissan 350Z has a great cockpit view
and is a good handling car. I personally find the Racer physics to be pretty
damn good, especially to be made by just one guy.

Great, I may try a different car. Perhaps the physics will be better in a
car other than the default Ferarri as well. One guy or a team, I don't
think that plays any role in if it's realistic or not. It is or it isn't
and IMO it isn't. I am pretty much done with that argument though. I never
really intended to be harsh towards the developer, Ruud. It is impressive
for one guy to have done the work on this solo. Doesn't it make it any more
realistic, from angle though. Anyway, I'll look at some other cars.

That's the one I'm having the most fun with. :-)
I thought you meant that there were an "P4" ini by Jim.
This is still a non-released car right?
I'm using the ini (slightly tweaked) in the Nissan, and it works out pretty
well.

Other than that, depending on your installation, it seems
DirectX/Windows can customize things so far that generic control sets
are only starting points.
Cockpit views are possible, see the Evo (press 9/0), but depends on
whether the car creator has implemented them.
As for any troubles, remember the version number: v0.5.0... So that
means the sim is about halfway there from what you could buy in a
store (actually for some parts it's further than that).

Yes, this seems to be a large bug that's supposed to be very different
from v0.4.9 and this latest version. I'm adding telemetry that
describes weight transfer, plus live braking balance (the actual
torques generated) and hopefully that could reveal why the braking
bias seems so much to the rear (handling-wise).
And apart from that, the telemetry would be cool (plan is to make an
option to add it to the replays, so you could save a replay and do
telemetry analysis later on offline).
Where's the Racer port of GPL Replay Analyzer when you need it? ;-)

Not piss-poor; I'll explain. It's the collision detection. Currently
the car is seen like a box. It then collides with a triangle.
As a shortcut I make a plane out of the triangle, and collide that
with the box. So when you collide into the triangle sideways, the
depth of the box inside the plane may be very big (deep), but that's
because the plane is larger than the triangle.
That's a bug that's got to be fixed, no doubt.
But to continue the story, the deep penetration depth then gives quite
huge forces to take the car out of the plane. Hence the blasts.
Drive into a wide horizontal fence and things should be better, as the
plane is almost the same as the triangle.
This small shortcut does make it seem like there's huge problems with
the physics, but I can reassure you, the physics are by now quite
good, even though I say myself.
>Also, why does it -demand- to have a live internet connection

It's client-server all the way. It sends data to the host, which is
localhost, 127.0.0.1. If your machine then responds with trying to
hook a live connection, that's your network's setup that could be
better.
For local pings (or even local network pings, like 192.168.x.x in most
environments), no outside call should be generated.

That's odd, is your hostname set to the date? (I call gethostname() on
Windows, which should return something like your computer name, like
'Foxtrot1' ;-) ).
Also try pinging 67.32.208.4 from a command prompt, see if that goes
through the internet. I'd set racer.ini's multiplayer.server to
127.0.0.1, that might avoid the lookup and keep 'localhost' to
127.0.0.1.
This is going to be a lot of fun when multiplayer on the net actually
works both way. ;-)

That's ok. There are enough people who like polished endresults for a
game. Just install, drive and not expect anything buggy to happen
(sadly for PC games that's often not the case, but that's also mainly
due to Windows).
Racer attracts people generally who like to customize the app, get
their own car/track in, play around with numbers etc. Sometimes that's
a totally different breed from game *players*.
No offence taken.

Try the 350Z indeed. Note that most formulae that are used in Racer

In that way, Racer is a middle road between the more high-end
simulations of the automotive industry, and the playable end of the
PC. So speed matters, but I try not to cut corners where it comes to
realism. This leads to the need of people (the users) becoming partly
car engineers, as you really have to build a car. As in real life,
this is not an easy task.
Sure, a lot of the numbers are off, and unfortunately the latest beta
(seems like a couple of versions) seem to have a bug in the brake
bias, making the cars spin out more than what should be.
The source code however, is quite aimed at simulation, which the
graphical counterpart being second. I'm also working with people that
are actually designing virtual prototypes of actual cars, and we
may/will share information on getting more realistic things still from
the simulation core.
But as for a 'buy & drive' product it's probably lousy compared to
getting a final version game from the stores. ;-) But those are
different targets, which says little about the internal quality of the
simulation.

Racer itself is 100% realistic
Some cars, however - are lacking.
The blame lies at the foot of some of the car makers.
However - the Renault Alpine, Anything from Stekki, The Quicksilver cars,
etc etc - are all SUPERB

Check http://www.racer-xtreme.com for ratings on cars. I _really_ like the
Nissan 350Z, and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo is pretty good. Just beware of the
current bug that makes the brake bias lean a little far to the rear, so take it
easy braking. :)

Jim Seamus pointed out that there's a nasty bug in b5
concerning camber which makes nearly all cars having camber
undriveable (that's why the mini still works).
Disable camber in debug.ini (use_camber = 0 I believe), and try
again, this should help a lot with the current beta version.
I found this comment in the high gear racer forum, so you might
want to check it out if you need more help.

Yes, all communication takes place over UDP connections, as the design
is client/server. Exactly like Quake3 for example; there you also
connect to yourself.
The reason for this is that it then makes no difference if the car is
on the network, or local. Besides, with the loopback device (lo0) as
all network computers have, a UDP packet for localhost should never
leave the computer anyway; in other words, the packet won't be
physically put to the ethernet card. It just takes a round trip in the
network driver.
The reason Racer seemed to ping out is probably because it took a full
IP address (67.something.x.y) and that was not seen by the network as
something local, so it sent it across another route (instead of lo0),
which then triggers dial-up.
It's really nothing unusual actually; all Quakes did it this way, and
in the Unix world, you'll see lots and lots of services sending
packets to their local network route. I might need some more intricate
hostname detection scheme.
Did you try 'ping 67.x.y.z' (your own IP), see what that did?

That may also be because the coefficients are a little enthusiastic.
The camber angles seem quite ok, but I'll have to check more to be
really sure where the problem lies.

If you don't have any network-card in your PC, and only use modem, you can
probably solve the problem by installing the "Microsoft Loop-Back Adapter"
as hardware.
It's just a virtual networkcard that makes the PC able to use networking
with itself.
Just do the normal add-new-hardware procedure and "select manually from a
list".
Then choose "Network adapters" as type, and in the list of items presented,
you choose Microsoft | LoopBack Adapter.

Some comercial apps require a NIC. SQL Server for instance. That's why there
is a possibility to emulate a NIC in certain special environments where
there currently are no NIC.

What the hell does the camera view have to do with the simulation of
physics, could one argue that watching F1 on TV does not make it a
true representation of life because there is no in-car camera?
If you play (as you state that you do) N2002, does the physics change
between in-car and external camera, NO. Yes, the experience is
different but it is still the same physics.
