GTR reboots when clickling "online"

Hi folks, after having managed to solve my fps issues recently, I re-installed a fresh copy of GTR, patched it to 1.5.0.0 and joined a couple of ADC races. However since of yesterday, whenever I click the online button on the GTR screen, GTR will lock up with a crackling sound for five seconds or so until the machine reboots itself (hard reboot, it's not me pressing the reset button). O/S is winxp pro sp2, but GTR ran fine on the same rig before it developed said FPS issues after upgrading the GPU to an X800GT0 three months ago. I've tried creating a fresh profile in GTR, put the problem persists even with the new profile. All other sims run fine without problem (rF, GTL, nkpro and so forth), so I don't think it's h/w related.
