GeForce4 Ti4200 underperforming in 3DMark and NASCAR 2002

Mark Davison found his GeForce4 Ti4200 gave only a small gain over a GeForce4 MX in NASCAR Racing 2002. Replies suggested checking chipset drivers and CPU speed; the fix was installing the motherboard's missing AGP driver, after which performance rose significantly.

Why is my vertex shader score in 3DMark with a GF4Ti4200 in an 1800XP LOWER than that of a GF2MX in my old P3 866?!?!?!?!?! And why would that same GF2MX when put into the 1800XP also produce lower reults (but still higher that with the GF4?!?!?!?! It's driving me INSANE!!! Mark Reading, UK

Does it run your fav games faster than the old card ? If the answer to this is yes, then forget the benchmarks :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

I know you said never mind, but the answer is... HARDLY! N2002 (the only one that matters right now) From 440MX to Ti4200 I get a 4fps increase at the start of a race at Daytona - keeping me at 30fps (just) as we enter the front stretch and the pits and grandstand become visible. I still get better performance from D3D than OpenGL. Replay from cockpit gives exactly same results so it's gotta be a vidcard bottleneck. I'm peeved. I know I shouldn't read too much into benchmarks, but my scores seem curiously low. In another thread someone claimed a score of circa 9500 with 1800XP/Ti4200 - I get around 6300. One thing that was noted in the results of 3Dmark is that sideband addressing(?) was available but disabled. What is this? Would it increase performance and if so how do I enable it? How do I know if my components are performing at their optimum? I know this is awfully off topic but it's a simracing rig on a budget, so improving framerates in Q3 or whatever doesn't interest me. Anyone know of a group where I might get answers to these questions? I'm getting more bald by the minute... Cheers, Mark Reading, UK

Barring the obvious questions (Via 4-in-1's, run Det Destroyer, etc.), get yourself a copy of SiSoft Sandra (the free version has all you need) and see if a) your processor is running at full speed (maybe you've got it on 100Mhz FSB) and b) what your memory benchmarks look like. I've got a GF3Ti200 and on my XP2100+ system with DDR, I just top 7000 in 3dmark. Let me know if you need any more details. HTH, Kendt

What kind of settings/ resoltions are we talking about here?? What sort of systems are these? I'm considering to upgrade my system too... Right now I got a 1.33gHz AMD and a 64mb GF2 Pro... What I have in mind is to get a 128mb GF4-Ti4400 or maybe a Radeon 8500.... and if my budget allow it.. a faster CPU aswell... -- ed_

Don't laugh, but... when I upgraded to a P4 chip and board, I went from a Celeron 566/GF2 mx to a P4 1.6A/GF4 4400. My benchmarks were only in the 5000 range. I tore my hair out trying to figure out wtf was going on. Finally, I talked to someone else familiar with P4 boards, and I had to plug in the extra plug in the mb for more power. After that I was 10,000+! Thx all. Huttu pointed in in the right direction. When I got this PC I gutted it - reformat and fresh install of Win98. I did not know that an AGP driver was required for windows!! Popped in the drivers disk for the mobo and there it was. What a dufus. Without any tweaking I ran a 3Dmark test and got just under 8500 - MUCH better than the 6200 I was getting... Now I need to find out if there's a way on enabling fast writes on this board, see if I can squeeze a liitle more out... Thanks again, Mark Reading, UK
Double your cpu if possible and then worry about a vid card..Hang on just a-bit longer. If/when the Radeon 9000's get released, we 'should' see some price movement on the TI Nvidia cards dave henrie "Ed Solheim" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:V1XZ8.170$[email hidden]...

If you have installed your "4in1" drivers, you have installed your AGP drivers as they are part of the "4in1" package And for the record, on a V5 you probably won't see much difference anyway, it may look like an AGP card, and it may use the AGP slot, but in reality it's not taking advantage of AGP, 3Dfx believed the AGP bus to be too slow to be of much use and designed their card differently, that's one of the reasons the PCI version of the V5 became quite popular with people who's computers didn't have an AGP port as the performance between the two of them were almost identical, hence you got a decent vid card that would run perfectly happy in a PCI slot That's Reader Digest version, I can't remember the tech bits, I'm old and my memory is failing me (actually I'm not *that* old but I'm not a morning person and I always feel old before lunch) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--

I've just gotten into work, but I'll check for you tonight. BTW, thanks for your work on RASCAR. I've only attended a couple of meets (#69 MrkyMrk) but it's much appreciated. Now that I've got a more capable rig I may try again - if you decide to keep on truckin', that is... Mark

8500.... > and if my budget allow it.. a faster CPU aswell... You may have caught my replies in another thread, but I didn't have my AGP interface set up correctly in Win98SE. Trash that 4fps increase. Actually getting on for a 33% increase (but then the MX was using the ill AGP...) I'm a much happier camper now, and I'm sure there's some extra juice to squeeze out with a little bit of tweaking... Mark Reading, UK

FYI: System Properties, View devices by type, System devices --> SiS Accelerated Graphics Port. That's what I've got. I guess YMMV from other Voodoo related posts in this thread... Mark Reading, UK Oh, and if this helps - make sure I'm on your RASCAR invite list for the once in a blue moon I'm able to attend.....;-).
