Well it looks like this is a slow and painfull death.
From the 12,000 posts per month in 2000, we're now to almost less than 500.
A thread or two per day if we exclude non-related cross-postings. Perhaps
we shall all move on to rscnet, and sacrifice our freedom of speech on an
ugly web board.
I've seen my share of Usenet newsgroup death, and the decay rate here is
pretty much in the same pattern as all those previous ones. Inevitable.

ymenard noted RAS traffic had fallen from 12,000 posts a month in 2000 to under 500, and lamented moving to heavily moderated RSC. Others blamed ISPs dropping Usenet, flame wars and specific posters, while many argued that what remained was a sensible core and that the genre had become niche as PCs went mainstream. Old-timers recalled the group's busy days around NASCAR Racing and IndyCar Racing.

hey, you know it happens here.)
I look at the list of groups I'm subscribed to, and it shrinks
every year. I'm now down to five groups. One of them is moderated,
and two are extremely low volumn paddling groups. So there's
r.a.s. and a guitar-related group. The guitar group seems to do
pretty well at keeping things easy-going. Flames sputter out in no
time.
We get what we deserve, I guess.

There are just so many forums now. Taking LFS as an example RSC has
minimal activity on this now, with the official LFS forum as the
definitive place to go. We also have forums for most products - and
there are a lot of products now compared with the good old days of Papy
sim racers vs DGF :)
It is the fragmentation of sim racing that is taking its toll on RAS
IMHO. I am sure it will continue for some time yet though.

Well in the peak of 2000, when we had 12000 posts in one month Bruce was

So maybe it is the lack of flame wars that has seen the demise in posts!
Not suggesting we want some, mind - I don't care about the number of posts.

I don't think RAS is going to go away anytime soon. We have quite a list

Yeah "the other forums" being mostly rscnet, I agree with you that I don't
want to move on there. It's a (very) fragmented mess, there's no cohesion
at all. No soul. Other PC gaming newsgroups are worse, check out the
comp.sys.idm.pc.games.* hierarchy.
My own ISP (the national #1 Canadian ISP) is dropping their NNTP server at
the end of the month. Sad.

I'm never sure whom actually won that :) I know that rasf1 vs. DGF
actually became a TKO by submission in the 8th round against David!

The rapid decay rate in the past year is for the most that, but there's
something else. The market for serious PC racing sims is not anymore a
mainstream market like it was back 5 years ago.

There was a well balanced mess of serious and non-serious posts, which all
helped the community of racing simulations fans.

RSC is filled up with moderators, strict guidelines, "things you cannot
mention", sticky threads that are useless, internal wars that are hidden to
the public, cowardly attitude in front of developpers, etc...

Yes, like any police force, it ends up amounting to a bunch of silly
bitches interested only in cutting everyones balls off and making it
impossible to set and maintain any standards. No room for any characters at
all and a place with no character other than that of a bunch of pooftas or
softcocks at best.
As far as things being quiet around here goes, I'd agree with the fact
that ISPs are tending to not supply access to usenet as standard - if at
all! A failing of government if you ask me - all governments should make
usenet access free to their citizens.
I'd also say that Papy's/Kaemer's absense is related. rFactor is
probably a little to chaotic for most peoples liking - hunting down tracks
and cars.
Papy = install and go
rFactor = install and join the endless search/wait for this and that
Not much else worthy of mention other than that all else contribute
further to the thinning/spreading out of simmers and simming in general and
amounting to more chaos.
We need a governing body and centralisation that deliver "WORLD" series!

All part of the "democratisation" of PC-use... or perhaps technology
use. Until the late 90's PCs were still mainly for enthusiasts, and such
a serious hobby meant "serious" sims were very popular because they
appeal to the same kind of mindset.
Now PCs are like toasters, everyone has one. So the interests of PC
gamers are more mainstream and less serious. But now consoles are
increasingly claiming such people, so PC gaming will naturally shrink
back towards its serious core of (nerdy :-) users.

I think you are right although previous attempts (FILSCA) haven't
exactly met with universal approval.
Of course we will have iRacing who stated in their original aims:
"...FIRST-Racing.net will deliver the next step. And, that next step
will incorporate new technology to heighten the realism as well as a
sanctioning body to launch a truly global online sport."
Please ignore the fact they started a sentence with a conjunction as
this post could go so OT as to muck up ymenard's stats for the
predicting the end of the world :)

Let's hope that isn't a trend. If ISPs start to give up on the idea of
newsgroups then Google/Groups is won't be the 'Oracle' of information
that it is nowadays. The amount of times that has provided me with the
info I require and saved the day I couldn't estimate. With no default
NGs (which I presume would only leave subscription services), then the
amount of information available to search is going to be reduced
severely.

Yeah, I think a world-wide racing sim block buster would fuel things in
here. But we all know that isn't going to happen.
The competition is fiercer than back in the heyday of Indycar II and
GP2, and GPL a bit later, so we simply won't see one single product to
create a "reborn" attitude in here.
Back then things went around without intervention, since the enthousiasm
and energy levels were so high due to the quantum leaps made in the sim
dept. at that time. These days, racing sims are a matter of personal
taste and feeling, you can't find another 2 secs per lap by tweaking
your setup in absurdum, so nobody to flame there, no obvious flaws to
exploit, no chances to cheat your way into a sim.
And we all got 10 years older since GPL, some of us have other stuff to
do, or more correctly, we prioritize differently.
The thing is: RAS will never be the same, but that is ok, since times
change, we change, racing sims change.

I actually pay a company to read/post in this newsgroup in addition to
giving me access to unrestriced USENET areas. So it is just a matter of
time before most ISP drop USENET access for free
