RASCAR decides to race at Sears Point

Members debated whether the next RASCAR race should be at Sears Point, with some saying NASCAR cars handle poorly there and others wanting to follow the Cup schedule. EldredP confirmed a 40% no-yellows race. The thread offered road-course tips about braking earlier and keeping a smooth flow.

It's not that it's hard. The NASCAR cars handle like boats in mud on that track, and clearly aren't designed for road course racing. It's slow and tedious at SP. Not hard. Also, as I mentioned to Eldred in another thread, if we follow the real cup schedule, we are soon going to repeat tracks we've just recently run, some for the third time while there are others that we haven't run yet. I seem to do better at the road courses with the outside view. I tried it sittin in the car and i cant even complete 2 laps.
"David G Fisher" wrote... > It's not that it's hard. The NASCAR cars handle like > boats in mud on that track, and clearly aren't > designed for road course racing. It's slow and > tedious at SP. Not hard. While I agree the default setups are not brilliant (I like the intermediate setup best, actually), the cars themselves are not that bad at this track. It takes a bit of adjusting from the usual roadcourse style (car doesn't respond as quick as a single seater), but once you start "going with the flow" as it were, they're pretty satisfying to drive at Sears Point, IMO. > Also, as I mentioned to Eldred in another thread, if > we follow the real cup schedule, we are soon going to > repeat tracks we've just recently run, some for the > third time while there are others that we haven't run > yet. I agree. I REALLY suck at the road courses and Sears Point is my least favorite track but I have to vote to run it. There will always be tracks that some people hate and others like. Turn off the yellows for this one though. If we are going to run it lets make the decision soon because I will need a lot more than my usual 15-30 min of off-line practice. Takes a while to remember how to use my left foot... :) Brian Oster

And not blow the tyres. :) I gravitated from GPL and had expected, after giving the old AI a good tonking on the ovals, that SP was going to be my Piece de resistance, or somesuch. Anyway, I couldn't even get under 1:24 whilst the AI were cruising around in the 1:21's. It really does take so much more practice to understand how to go fast on this track. -- Peter Ives Remove ALL_STRESS before replying via email If you know what's good for you, don't listen to me GPLRank Joystick -50.63 Wheel -21.77

Ok, thanks. Interesting news... I was just practising New Hampshire, and I realised that I went just as fast breaking earlier, saving the tires. Since you have done the same conclusion, I feel strengthened in my belief that I should try to run smoother, rather than push. This sim is just soo dam good... I cannot get myself to drive F1-2002. I bought it some week ago, but it feels so 'arcadish' compared to N2002, so it just gathers dust... Then I've tried to spend time with GPL, but the tyrenoise is soo tiresome. N2002 is _the_ sim right now. /Carl "Goy Larsen" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

But it would be nice to kind of integrate the GPL and N2002 communities a little more. After all, until recently, I wouldn't buy N2002 because it was NASCAR and I thought the physics were going to waste. One bargain-bin later and I realise just how much the physics have advanced since GPL. Maybe something like running GPL tracks in N2002 would convert more simmers? Just a thought. Nick.

Late-braking seems fast, but you only spend like <10% of your lap on the brakes, so the gain in time is minimal when compared to the risk. Going in to turns steadily gives a better line through the corner, and makes you faster out of the corner (and along the following straights) so it is much more of a benefit. Damn hard to force yourself to brake early tho, it just seems wrong.

My main concern? Getting hit in the ass-end. Or hitting someone else in the ass-end. I absolutely guarantee that this will be the #1 issue if we race this track. Ass-ending... I think we all need to make a pact that whatever happens during this race, it will be forgiven upon it's completion. We may even want to bar it's discussion in RAS after it's run :) What was that CCR said? Why would you want to use em Larry? I would think it would be more of a hindrance than help. I would say you are better off just learning the track. Take her slow, this track surely fits the saying "slow down to speed up". Mitch "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ABLP8.53627$[email hidden]...

There's not enough time. I can race without them, and the point isn't improving one's position. Not at all. There isn't an assist that's been created (short of a rail system) that will give me a chance at running near the top at this track. The question is if it will help _everyone_ run a safer race, and possibly help in preventing the people who can run this track fast do it with less fear of getting run over by someone losing forward bite and spinning out in front of them. Like I said. I can run without them. It's just a basic question. -Larry "Mitch Alatorre" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:BOLP8.870$[email hidden]... > Why would you want to use em Larry? Just one little comment, I'm talking about road courses here, not ovals, never ever take advice from me on the ovals :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

Don't know about driving aids, but I would suggest setting the steering ratio to 16:1. That helps a lot, IMO. Jan. =---

Cheers Jan, I will give it a try. Admittedly, I was so taken aback by being so far off the pace that I did some practice laps their - the only track I've bothered practising on, I normally just run Championships - and at least managed some low 1:23's, I think. -- Peter Ives Remove ALL_STRESS before replying via email If you know what's good for you, don't listen to me GPLRank Joystick -50.63 Wheel -21.77

Especially when the habit has served you well for at least 4 years of intense sim racing, my accomplishments before 98 is best kept a secret :-) I'm working on it though, and making some progress, it's just that I love late braking, gives you a feeling of actually "racing", and very useful for tricking people into mistakes so I can overtake them .... every now and then, despite what Mr Harris might think :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--
Another thing... Early braking makes it much easier to not make the screetch sound but just the scratching sound ;-) Saving tires can easily save you a pitstop. One pitstop less can mean one lap gain... Kinda nice to just let the hotlappers by, and then pass them while they change tires. Ending up 20 to 40 secs infront at the end of the race :-) (ok, now I'm talking normal _clean_ oval racing with almost no yellows) /Carl "Nick" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Ah, but I don't race GPL :-), the only driving I do in GPL is firing up the Eagle or Honda every once in a blue moon and doing a few laps at Zandy I admire GPL a lot, but the cars themselves are of little interest to me as I need doors and a roof, and if possible Bathurst But I do brake late in GPL as well, but not as late as I've been doing in N2/3/4/2002 or other sims due to the unstable nature of the GPL cars when braking during corner entry, never could find a decent setup for that, but then again I never really got into GPL so I'm not the right person to make a qualified statement about it Yes yes, I know you're all shocked now, "He doesn't race GPL !!!", well, the secret is out I guess :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--

Eldred, Goy and the other old hands in the TPTCC leagues have always claimed the 'slow in fast out' approach was the best way to go fast. Of course when I tried that, I got punted from behind by the AI that Goy helped create. dave henrie

After the misreable performance I put in last night with the TPTCC DTM league???? NO! dh
That's the problem with the slow-in, fast out approach. You get punted time and time again because people aren't paying attention behind you, or they are just to close to react in time. -Larry "Dave Henrie" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:WAvQ8.24097$EP.1031@sccrnsc03...

It's actuially smarter to start slowing earlier than you normally would if you're behind someone. You'll stand a better chance of getting by them the next time they screw up.
