New screenshots for Gp4

GP4 screenshots draw mockery of Crammond's engine
New Grand Prix 4 screenshots showing high processor occupancy prompted jokes about Geoff Crammond's outdated graphics engine, lack of OpenGL and split-seat multiplayer. A few defended GP4's additions such as cambered tracks, force feedback and wet weather.

Someone should tap Crammond on the shoulder and say
"Excuse me, this is 2002, have you heard of Open GL at all?"

From the place he got his book
"Direct 3d For Dummies"
He really should get round to reading it

Does GP4 still have split-multiplayer, where one driver sits after the other
and has 10 seconds to change seat?

Probably - but wait - they've done that pivital feature of all sims to make
it as real as it gets...

descent online multiplayer, you expect that with a 1.2ghz/gf3 that you can
run just about all details in hi-res at a acceptable framerate, but perhaps
Geoff isnt in these days. I feel bad that everyone bags his work nowdays,
but its only because its bad, not because anyone hates him..

Let's
do
the
time warp....
agaaaain!!!
;)! - Yeah, GP4 doesn't have online multiplay because of the FIA, yeah
- I believe that one.

This is a favourite from the readme for GP4
Network play:
"2. The game can support 22 players, but only if all players are running on
high
specification machines. This is to future proof the game."
Future proof of what? :)
"This is to make sure that the game will run like an old dog even on your
system in 2030"
?

The FIA are just brain-dead...it's starting to become obvious. :(

According to interviews he's not working "alone" anymore. There's
supposedly a large team behind GP4. Why the hell it's taken this
long to finish is totally beyond me. GP1 -> GP2 was a huge leap,
no doubt. GP2 -> GP3 was a minor upgrade, mainly in graphics.
GP3 -> GP4 has added animated pit crews, some lame radio
voices, and practically nothing else. And to top it all off the graphics
are at best marginally better than GP3, yet they demand twice the
machine. He would've been better off spending a few weeks
patching away the bugs (invisible walls etc) in GP3 and gone on
to make GP4 a console-only title.

You forget:
- moving 3D cockpit
- tracks with camber
- force feedback
- cc improvements (2000 season)
- physics (differential - 2000 season)
- very good wet weather simulation
- improved replays (2000 season)
- debris collisions (2000 season)
> <snip>
I think most of the GP4 effort went to the Xbox version. At least it tied
the pc developpers from a certain point. We pc owners were unlucky it seems.
I have yet to try it out though. If GP4 compares the same to its reviews
here as GP3 does, I might still like it :)

Except that a game of this low quality would never sell on consoles.
On PCs there seems to be some wierd Crammond religious following who
buy up whatever he spews out.
the reason is they are all indian programmers
so for the best part of the time
they are just getting over "c o f f e e "
and " m i l k " ( say it very slowly )
etc

The only reason I play GP4 as opposed to GP3 is that it works properly in
XP. I must admit my experience with the sense of speed is the opposite
to that of everybody else in here. I get more of a sense of high speed in
GP4 than GP3. Guess I'm odd.

Modern C optimizers are extremely sophisticated. In most cases it can
outperform hand-written assembly code. As just one example, an
optimizer will organize code and data to make the most efficient use
of specific hardware characteristics. You just can't do that by hand.
