Will adding a second CPU help my simracing rig?

By a silly mistake I bought a dual CPU board and just put in one CPU. My intensions was to put in the second CPU when I needed more juice and the CPU price had gotten down. It was a mistake because you have to use identical CPU's, same speed and same stepping, and it's off course impossible to find a CPU that matches the one I have now. But, will GPL, F1 2002 or any other sim run smother or with more FPS if I trow away my P3 800 and put in two P3 1GHz? I have heard stories about some games are not able to run on a dual CPU system. Any truth in that? OS is Win XP Pro. Jone.

Your OS is fine - but games are generally not SMP ( i.e more than one processor ) enabled. I still think it would be a good idea ( graphics on one cpu - everything else on t'other) However - you may notice a slight improvement in performance as one CPU can handle the OS background, and one cpu can be entirely dedicated to the game. The improvement will be, however, marginal at best. Best option is to sell the dual motherboard ( make great 3d workstations for rendering etc ) and get a faster single processor athlon :D Doug
Unfortunately as far as I know no Race sims supports SMP (dual processors) GamesQusing the Quake 2 or 3 engine do and I don't know of many else. Therefore it's great if you play Medal of Honor of Jedi Outcast etc put is of absolutley no use in racing games. Best use for the dual processor rig is to host multiplayer games ie one processor for the games and the other for the OS. So the be all and end all if you are a race sim fan is spend your dosh on faster cpu not more of them. This is a shame but that's the way it is. Some Call Me Tim

GPL, N4, and N2002 all support multi-processor under a multi-processor OS, like NT/2000/XP. Sorry I can't tell you anything about the other games...of course the answer to your question also depends on your video card as well... -- Biz "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and the....." - Ash Jone Tytlandsvik <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ae8eup$4vshl$[email hidden]... > By a silly mistake I bought a dual CPU board and just put in one CPU. GPL my only waiste of time right now but I was hoping to be able to get more time to waist. So Papyrus made sure GPL was compatible with NT4 when it was released? Most programmers could not care less if their software was compatible with NT/2000/XP until about a year ago. :) Quite impressive. Now why do these wonderful guys spend all their time on NASCAR!!!!! As others have pointed out, N2 and N2002 also support SMP of course, as for GPL being NT4 compatible.....no idea how that came about, but DX was in it's infancy at the time and NT4 supports DX3....something like that perhaps And I agree, they should be making an AussieV8 sim rather than this Nascar stuff Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "A man is only as old as the woman he feels" --Groucho Marx--

If the titles are setup to take advantage of a dual CPU set up there should be a noticable differance. Now in titles not set up for it then I would agree with you. MadDAWG
I quick search of this newsgroup in Google.com of "dual CPU and GPL" go me lots of reading: I would suggest doing that. I think the improvement would relate to about 5 to 10% increase in overall GPL performance. Not really worth the cost of another CPU, unless you can get one really cheap. I have found that some computers do not need the CPUs to be matched in the stepping, and some do. SLG "MadDAWG" <[email hidden]> wrote: >Anyone tried NR2002/GPL on a dual CPU setup? Here is what Randy Cassidy had to say about it a few years ago: "Actually, GPL _was_ specifically designed to take advantage of a multi-processor system (well, a two-pocessor system, anyway). There were one or two small programming glitches in 1.0 that caused problems on a multi-processor system, but those were fixed in version 1.1. Randy" Cheers, /Martin

Are ther any setting you need to change to enable smp in GPL? I don't if it'll be of much use in GPL as if maxes out af 36fps even on quite old systems now, N2K2 could benefit though. I have a question. Wouldn't any multi-threaded application automatically benefit from multiple processors if the OS is a SMP OS? Stated another way, when you say that an application "supports SMP" or is "designed for SMP" does it simply mean that it is multi-threaded? As I asked/pointed out earlier I believe that any multi-threaded app will gain from multiple cpu's. Having said that though, the performace gain will probably be very minimal with an app like N2002 AND I am willing to bet that a single 2.1 GHZ machine will outperform a dual 1.8 GHZ machine when running N2002 any day of the week and cost less. I believe it will depend entirely upon the game. GPL(not so much), but N4/N2002 are very cpu-intensive, they may benefit immensely from a dual cpu setup. You have to remember that in many cases, the people asking about SMP, already have a dual capable system, but might not have added the second cpu, or don't run these games on their SMP setup, instead running under Win9X instead. -- Biz "Don't touch that please, your primitive intellect wouldn't understand alloys and compositions and,......things with molecular structures,....and the....." - Ash

Of course if they don't have the second cpu, good luck trying to find a match... Brian Oster
