Paid N2002 replay analyzer sparks freeware debate
Ed Solheim asked about a replay analyzer for NASCAR Racing 2002, and Martin Granberg said his would be released shortly as paid software. Douglas Ellison and Ed argued that charging went against the community's free spirit, while many others defended authors' right to ask a small fee for their work.

Ahh... so *thats* why its been so quiet about it... :-)
'Hate it when some want to make a profit on stuff like this though.....
makes me wonder how many tracks/cars/utilites/drivers/leauges we would have
if everyone wanted to earn a dime on their "product"... :-/
Who'll be the first to ask $10 for a track?

It is finished and will hopefully be released early next week, along
with a more informative website.

Developing software takes a lot of time and effort. Asking for a few
dollars is not unfair.
If people don't want to buy it then it's still open for someone to make a
freeware version of their own.
I'd rather have people developing a number of decent pay programs than only
have a rare few free ones.

It's gonna be $10 or something so I've heard.
Which - imho - is against EVERYTHING that this community is about.
I've only been involved in one GPL project ( And all I did was make a few
3do's for castle combe)
BUT - Mike Cotching and Fred Norm...... spent litterally HUNDREDS AND
HUNDREDS of hours doing that track
At a programmers rate of 25 an hour - Castle Combe would have probably cost
10,000 to make.
That - plus the huge ammount of bandwidth to host it ( half a dozen gigs of
transfer) - It's not a 'cheap' thing to do.
Now, whilst I have to say well done for doing the GPLRA - ( I used it, loved
it) - I will not pay for a community product.
I say the same now I said to Noonan. Do it for free - or leave it to
someone else who will.

Either you're a commercial venture - or you're a community team.
Did Mike Cotchin ask for a few dollars for Castle Combe, Did DG ask for a
few dollars for his textures, Does Brian Simpson ask for a few dollars for
his N2k2 templates?
I just think it's outside the spirit of the community - and I will not be
contributing
Well said Doug... to me there no difference between a track, a car or an
utility program.
It's all "labour of love" and nothing more.

Not intended to be a flame Douglas, but who are you to tell someone how they
should spend their time and what they should do with their efforts and
creations? So nobody should create anything, unless it's in the "community
spirit"? Otherwise they have to be a "commercial" venture? Yes, there are
alot, no.. a TON, of free creations out there and many people certainly
appreciate all the efforts of these groups. Nobody would want to pay for
everything with all the mods/updates put out there. But, if someone wants
to spend time creating something and ask for a little cash in return, I see
nothing wrong with it.
I don't see any problems asking a modest fee for someone's efforts,
particularly when they are "unique". It's a pretty old practice under the
shareware concept. If you don't want to pay for it, don't. Just don't be
asking others for copies or hacking the registration as that is piracy. It's
shareware.
I understand creations for the community, I understand Open & GPL licenses,
I understand shareware, and I understand commercial ventures. I don't see
why anyone has to be "forced" into one or the other in order to contribute
to the community.

If that's all you're going to say, that's fair enough. You're entitled to your
opinion, and I support that. But if you're gonna constantly nag about it, be
prepared for the pushback you'll get.
Personally, I don't see any problem with someone charging. I probably won't
buy it, but it *is* a free enterprise... If others will pay for it, that's
their choice, and it's fine. If nobody buys it, maybe they'll remove the fee.

Oh I think it's pretty much a given that young Ellison will nag about
people daring to charge for software

Would they charge a fee from their members I wonder.....
Seriously, we need a bit of both, shareware and freeware both have their
place, you vote with your wallet, if the Martin's RA was something I'd
feel like using, I'd be willing to pay for it, same with Dave's
converters

Hi Martin,
go ahead and charge some for the RA. You guys who do add-ons over the years
must be spending hundreds if not thousands of hours creating them.
I thank you for charging so little for it, just as I thank Dave Noonan for
charging so little for his converters, so little as compared to how much
time guys like you and him invest in these products.

That is not true. Go on www.tucows.com, www.download.com, www.simtel.com, name your download site.
90% of the programs on there are shareware, and probably a good 70% of those are just programmers who
want a little in return for their effort. They are not incorperated, they do not have an office, they are someone
who wrote a program that they hope someone likes.

Point? These people chose not to charge for their products. I've never built anything that I charged for either.
I run The Pits free of charge (luckily at the moment the nice guys at BHMotorsports don't get charged for hosting
me). However, in the past I've kept The Pits online, even when it was costing $120/month. So? If someone
chooses to charge for their products, that's their rightful decision. If I like it, I'll buy it. If I don't, I won't.

That's your rightful decision.

Exactly the reason why I don't see a problem with people charging for the
work they do. Why are you so against someone getting a reward for their
efforts. If it happened more then some of these guys could even make a
career out of it, allowing more time to be devoted to the projects, making
them even higher quality. Its been happening for years in the FlightSim
world and see what that has done for that sim.
Just because its on the internet does not make it free.
