Thinking about installing Zone Alarm, but concerned it might cause me some
problems when I try to log on to online racing. At the download site for
zone alarm, most comments are positive, but a few said they had problems
with email and surfing the net after installing the program. Anyone here
had any problems of this nature?
Thanks

Does ZoneAlarm cause problems with online racing?
A poster asked whether the ZoneAlarm firewall interferes with online racing. Experiences varied: several reported stutters, warping or hangs in GPL and NR2002 and recommended Sygate or Tiny/Kerio Personal Firewall instead, while others ran ZoneAlarm without issues. Goy Larsen noted that Kerio's Internet Connection Sharing support was uncertain.
Automated summary.
Caused screeb stutter in N4 for me so I switched to Sygate Personal Firewall
and no longer have any problems.

The comment I've heard the most often is not being able to host online
races. But like Milhouse sez, you just disable it for the nonce (which is
what I have to do with SyGate). You might also try Tiny Software (free) and
PC-Cillin ($).

the only one I found that I can leave on is Norton and I quite often get

I am using the latest free version and I have to shut it off to run GPL
online. If I don't, GPL hangs.
I also play an online game called Dark Age of Camelot, and it has random
freezes if I leave ZA running.

internet Access aproval doesn't make it with GPL. The PRO version of ZA
fixes this, in that you can assign programs in advance so they don't have to
wait for the game to be launched to get internet approval.

I've tried GPL in a window, still hangs. I've made sure GPL.EXE (and
VROC.EXE) have full permissions in ZA. Nothing helped. So I gave up on it; I
don't really care if it's running either.
I haven't used ZA in a while, heh. I think it did get patched out, but the
program disappointed me for other reasons too. I've got a hardware firewall
anyway.

It is free for the FULL version (not the half-baked version like ZA),
actually behaves the way you expect it to (again, another thing ZA is
infamous for NOT doing), and ZA got raped at security testing, yet Tiny's
passed with flying colors.
Skip ZA, go get Tiny... you'd have to go through what a lot of heart-ache
like the ex-ZA users have to understand why.... so just trust me on this. I
cringe at the sound of the name Zone Alarm <eek> that is how much I dislike
it.

I need to know if this is something I should be concerned about before I
install the program. I have cable/network setup, and do race online, but do
not host. Please post your response here.

If Internet Connection Sharing is not something you use, then you need

yeah, it's not that, I had it too. It almost always froze when using escape

I think they claim to, but i got a lot of error messages when trying to run
it on my ICS "gateway" PC. So I still use ZA on that, but Kerio on the
other.
