Fixing F1 2001's DirectX 8 error on a Voodoo5

Alison Hine could no longer run F1 2001 on her Voodoo5 because of a 'no DirectX 8 video adapters found' error. Many suggested different 3dfx drivers and ways to clean out old ones, but the fix came from B Farmer: toggling the Direct3D acceleration button in DxDiag, after which F1 2001 ran again.

Augh!! I can't run F1 2001 any more! When I try to run it, I get this error message: F1 2001 cannot be run on this computer. No DirectX 8 video adapters found. Please contact your video card vendor for updated drivers. I installed the F1 2001 Development Update #1, but still no joy. My video card is a Voodoo5 5500. CPU is an Athlon T-bird 1.2 running in an Abit KT7. Sound card is SB Live Value. OS is Win98. The Voodoo driver reports as version 4.12.01.0666, release date 12-2-2000. I recently installed Papyrus NASCAR 2002. It installs DirectX 8.1. Could this be the problem? (N2002 runs fine on this computer, BTW.) What's the fix? 3Dfx is gone. Are there drivers out there somewhere for the Voodoo5 that work with F1 2001? (I love GPL on the Voodoo5 and am not eager to go to a GeForce card.) http://www.x3dfx.com/ http://www.voodoofiles.com/type.asp?cat_id=1 I have a couple of more links on my home PC, let me know if these don't work for you and I'll look them up Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "The Pits" http://www.theuspits.com/ "Animation isn't the illusion of life; it is life" --Chuck Jones (1912-2002)--
Thanks for the links, Goy. However, I still need some guidance. There are a zillion different drivers listed at the two sites you showed. Which one is most likely to make F1 2001 work on my system without breaking GPL and N2002? Also, do I need to deinstall my existing V5 drivers or can I just install the newer driver on top of the old one? I've seen horror stories about Voodoo driver installs, and I don't have time to recover my system if it gets hosed. Anyone? My V5 is gathering dust right now, but from what I could remember, the last certified drivers 1.04 (still availiable on www.3dfx.com i think) never had any compability problems. -- Olav K. Malmin remove .spam when replying
Download 3dfx drivers 1.04.01 Beta (they work best for me). Uninstall 3dfx tools from Add-Remove programs in Control Panel. Reboot. Go to Display Properties>Advanced>Adapter>Change. Choose "select from list". Go to Standard Display Types. Select Standard Display Adapter (VGA). Reboot. Install 3dfx drivers. Reboot Install DX 8.1. Reboot Uninstall 3dfx tools and reboot. Please ignore the last line in my last post. The last step is reinstalling DX 8.1. Ignore the Uninstall 3dfx tools at the bottom. That's the first step. Sorry. Alison Hine <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

What operating system are you running? That could make a difference. I run F1 2001 on Windows XP Pro, which comes with DirectX 8.1 natively. If the other suggestions in this thread don't work, try going to Start/Run and type in "dxdiag" (without quotes) in the run line and hit the Enter key. Run the DirectX tests on your machine and see if it shows an error somewhere. -- Chris H. "Alison Hine" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > Augh!! Alison, I have virtually the same system as you, and I don't have any problems running F1 2001, nor the ALMS mod. But I've also installed the update #2. I'm running the 1.04 beta drivers and they work great, as well as Direct X 8.1 Joel Willstein -- "If you can leave black marks on a straight from the time you exit a corner till the time you brake for the next turn , then you have enough horsepower." Well, I haven't tried any of these under W98 as I've now installed WinXP on the 3 PC's I'm running with V5's One is running with the X3dfX drivers, one is running with the drivers that came with XP and one is running with drivers from another place that I don't have the link to at the moment, performance wise the driver that came with XP is lagging a bit behind and don't come with the "3Dfx tools" of course I have not installed F1-2001 on either PC, and I've never installed any of these on top of other drivers either, save for those that came with XP, but as a rule I always uninstall older drivers before installing new drivers unless told otherwise by the readme I agree, there are too many drivers, as much as I appreciate the effort of the community to keep our cards running for as long as possible, a joint effort might have been better for those of us that don't have time to fiddle around with our PC's all the time, currently I have some 80 MB of various drivers for the V5 on the server here, bit too much :-) If I was doing it over again, I'd give the X3Dfx drivers a go, to the best of my knowledge these are at least partly created by people who used to work for 3Dfx.... Guys & Goys, I think what Alison needs is a set of Voodoo drivers like these: http://www.voodoofiles.com/4988 which offer full support for DX8.0 (and, hopefully, 8.1, 'cuz F1 2001 wants to see 8.1). But she's right--there are dozens of drivers on these sites, many of which have utterly confusing nomenclature (I saw one set of drivers marked "beta 3 beta 3"--which is it?). --Steve "Alison Hine" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

P.S. Wild horses couldn't make me try to *uninstall* DX8 or 8.1. Bin there, got the burqa--it cost me a reformat/reinstall of Win ME. "Steve Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:zxgv8.148536$[email hidden]...

I can check what version of drivers I have when I get home from work. I'm using a V5, and I can run all three programs fine... I have a V5 running on dual boot with 98se and XP. On 98 I use the 1.04.01 beta which runs perfect. I have just found some drivers for XP called dozer version 1 and then an upgrade to version 1.1 and they have put my V5 back to what is was under 98. It works with Colin McRae 2, Rally Trophy, Grand Prix 3, F1 2001 and with the GT mod. The only game I have not yet loaded to XP is Grand prix Legends which I have still got on its own under 98. ps I did try the 1.08.01 driver package that was meant to be the business but for me there where to many strange things happening. Just a side tip for some of the people in this thread - check out Norton Ghost 2002 or Powerquest DriveImage. These programs are able to backup Windows partitions from DOS meaning that if something goes haywire with Windows, you can have everything restored in about 5 mins. No more spending 2-3 hours reinstalling Windows and setting it up how you like it... -- Damien Smith [email hidden] ICQ: 77028579 F1 2001 rank: -5.658 GPL rank: um, yes
Allison, I practically have the same system as you do -- Voodoo5 (AGP), Windows 98, Athlon XP1700+. I'm running GPL, NR2002 and F12001 (plus 2 of the mods) with no problems at all. My Voodoo Driver is Version 4.12.01.0666, dated 11-2-2000. Not sure where you can download it from, but I should be able to e-mail it to you, if need be. ...And I agree with you. I like the Voodoo5's performance in GPL too much to switch to a Geforce or Radeon. I guess that I'm hooked on that Glide Wrapper (larger mirror). Bert Alison Hine wrote:

As others have pointed out voodoofiles, try the X3DFX drivers 1.08.04. They're a tweaked version of the official 1.04 drivers and are probably the best ones around for W98 & W2K. I dual boot with these drivers and both operating systems and have yet to find a game that doesn't run.. including F1 2001. Additionally they enabled more features to allow more tweaking of the card itself, using them I can get incredible frame rates in games like Unreal Tourney at very high resolutions. Heckler

Run the DirectX tests on your machine and see if it shows an error somewhere. Thanks to everyone who has replied to my question! I really appreciate your help! Chris, I tried the DXDiag display tests and got this failure: Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available) What now? I'm running Windows 98 (not SE) and almost the same V5 drivers as Eldred Pickett, and he has no problem running F1 2001. (See my complete driver info attached). Eldred is running 4.12.01.0666, Release Date: 11-2-2000. I am running 4.12.01.0666, Release Date : 12- 2-2000. I find I have these release dates as available drivers under Display/Properties/Settings/Advanced/Adapter/Change: 11-2-2000 12-2-2000 12-10-2000 Maybe I should try one of the other versions already on my machine? I've looked for the 1.04 beta driver on all the links given in this thread, but I haven't found it. I do have vs-w9x-1_04_00.exe on my hard drive already, but I suspect that the beta driver is 1_04_01. Is that right? There's a link to this version at http://www.x3dfx.com/ but it's a dead link. Also, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling F1 2001, but it still gives the same message. BTW, I've realized I also installed some other things since last running F1 2001: MS Flight Simulator 2002 Motor City Online GPLOMe WCPUID3 I also have these on my machine but I'm pretty sure I ran F1 2001 since installing them: DivX Codec 3.1alpha release MGI VideoWave Act Labs Shifter Utility (works fine) Alison [email hidden] http://eaglewoman.maximumspeed.com

Ok, I've done all this, except I used the 1.08.04 drivers since they are updated versions of 1.04. Still the same error from F1 2001: F1 2001 cannot be run on this computer. No DirectX 8 video adapters found. Please contact your video card vendor for updated drivers. Maybe something else besides the driver is messed up, since several people say they have been running F1 2001 on the 1.04 drivers - and I was doing this too, before installing N 2002 and Dx8.1. It seems like somehow F1 2001 has gotten tricked into thinking there are no drivers for Dx8.1, when in fact there are. Any ideas? *Help!* I'm at the end of my rope! If you want, and it won't hurt anything to try, here's how I got rid of ALL the 3dfx stuff when I went to Nvidia stuff. I had no success with the shareware programs that are supposed to do this. 1. Using the add/remove programs function, delete any reference to 3dfx and/or it's drivers. 2. Using the find function from your start menu, make sure it's directed to your hard drive, and type in these four commands, one at a time: -3dfx*.* -opengl*.* and -3dfx.* -opengl.* Once found, delete everything found :) If you see something game specific, i.e., in a specific game's folder, you can leave that obviously. You're looking for the stuff left in your windows/system folder, etc. 3. Re-install V5 driver of choice........only one<G> This should give you a clean install of your V5 stuff. I'm still thinking you're getting a bunch of driver conflicts due to all the driver garbage leftover from the different versions. When you run a DX test in it's diagnostic program, what happens ? Anyway, it worked for me, on a similiar problem, though switching from 3dfx to Nvidia, and it's worth a shot..............beats c:\format :( Hope it helps. -John "Alison Hine" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Thanks for this suggestion, John! I tried it, but unfortunately it didn't help. I uninstalled 3dfx Tools and deleted all the files you suggested. Also I uninstalled something called GLSetup, which had some files in it starting with "opengl". I reinstalled the V5 1.08.04 driver, and I still get the same error from F1 2001. It still thinks there is no Dx8 video adapter in my machine. Maybe there were some leftover entries in the registry that are fooling F1 2001? <sigh> Alison On Thu, 18 Apr 2002 15:17:29 -0600, "John Pancoast" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Hmmm........registry entries could be at fault, but probably not. You can look I guess and if you see anything not related to your current driver, delete it. Sorry, has me stumped too :( Are you able to get successful tests in the DX diagnostics menu ? If so, it's game related then. If not, it's driver/DX related. -John "Alison Hine" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

DXDiag display diagnostics succeed except for this error: Direct3D test results: Failure at step 5 (GetDeviceCaps): HRESULT = 0x8876086a (3D not available) It looks like all my messing around with the drivers has screwed up the system, too. My scanner software doesn't work any more. I was planning to send some drawings of a proposed redesign of our real-world Cobra's rear suspension to my brother Nate, but now I can't scan anything. Reinstalling the scanner drivers didn't help. <sound of weeping in frustration> Alison On Thu, 18 Apr 2002 16:01:11 -0600, "John Pancoast" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Since you're running Windows 98, how about trying System File Checker? You can run this from Start/Run and type in "SFC" (without quotes). Take a look at the options, and make sure you're prompted on any files it wants to replace. It just could be with everything (alpha!) you've installed, something has over-written one of the system files and it is now reacting to that. If you're not familiar with SFC, take a peek in the Help area before running it, so you know what to do. It will only replace system files for you, and I would make sure you're running only a stock or correctly updated Win98 in these areas. That will eliminate any possible system problems and help point the finger at maybe video or sound. -- Chris H. Well, things always look a little brighter in the morning. I really appreciate your help, John! And that of the other people who posted in this thread. I haven't made progress on the F1 2001 problem - it still doesn't run on this computer, but at least I have a better Voodoo5 driver now. I found I was having scrambled textures in GPL and screen hangs in N2002 with the 1.08.04 drivers, so I uninstalled those and went to the 1.04.01 beta drivers. Those problems are gone, and GPL and N2002 seem to run as well as they ever did. Unfortunately, my reference for tweaking the Voodoo5 driver, VoodooSource Tweaks, is gone, so I have no idea how to optimize the settings as I did before I started all this! I fixed the scanner problem by hooking the scanner up to another computer. It's less convenient, but at least I can scan stuff. At this point it looks like my options are narrowing down to either format C: and reinstall everything, or ditch the Voodoo5 and get a GeForce. I love the way GPL looks on the V5. Driving GPL now is such a joy! Everything I hear says the GeForces can't match this, so I am very loathe to ditch the V5. And reinstalling everything just to get one game to work seems like too much work! Well, thanks again, everyone! Maybe I'll come up with a solution soon. Woohoo!!!!! Brian, you did it!! I clicked the button three times. The first time it didn't change; stayed Enabled. Second time, it became disabled, third time it became enabled again. I then ran the test, and it came out clean. And, wonder of wonders, F1 2001 runs!!! Aaaaaaaaa!!! Thank you, thank you! Thanks to everyone for all of your help and suggestions! Now I have a better driver than before, and I can run all my favorite sims (I hope!) Alison On Fri, 19 Apr 2002 05:45:57 GMT, "B Farmer" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Glad to hear Brian's idea did the trick ! I'll have to remember that one myself, it's a new one for me too. -John p.s. Stay with the V5 :) I'm looking for a pci version myself, as my mobo won't take an agp V5(Asus P4t board's agp slot is to short.....or the V5 is to long, depending on how you look at it :) -John "Alison Hine" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...
