iRacing offers free one-month trials aimed at GPL and NR2003 fans

Tony Rickard announced a free iRacing month offering the Skip Barber at VIR or Late Models at Martinsville, aimed at GPL and NR2003 fans. Jeff Reid doubted GPL fans would like the Skip Barber, while Tony called it the closest thing to GPL2. Peter had trouble getting his cards accepted, and the offer was reportedly withdrawn after abuse such as joke sign-up names.

At last you can get to try iRacing for free! http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=128241125479&ref=mf Rather than the basic content you get a choice of driving the Skip Barber around VIR (an excellent combination IMHO) or the Late Models around Martinsville Speedway - something that should appeal to GPL & NR2003 fans respectively. Like most trial subscriptions the first month is free and you will need to cancel your monthly subscription. This is clearly marked but for the avoidance of doubt I mention it here! Cheers Tony
> Skip Barber ... GPL I don't think fans of GPL would like the Skip Barber. The most memorable part of learning to drive GPL was using lift throttle oversteer to control the car from corner entry to apex. One of the early lessons in GPL was to switch to an 85/45/x differential to learn how to use lift throttle oversteer. The Skip Barber punishes you for trying to do the same thing (I don't know if left foot braking would help with the Skippy). The Radical on the other hand, seems very happy using lift throttle oversteer, combined with the other GPL technique of induced understeer (steering inwards to control oversteer), producing some nice drifts in the turns, producing a feel similar to GPL. iRacing Radical at SilverStone, some drifting about 1/3rd into the lap: http://jeffareid.net/ir/irssrad.wmv GPL (Greg Stewart at Rouen, in car view over chase car view): http://jeffareid.net/gpl/gplrngs.wmv
Plenty of people loved the GPL trainers and they will love the Skippy too. "jeffareid" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:5%Unm.165216$[email hidden]...

The Skip Barber is the closest thing to GPL2 albeit an F3 trainer variant IMHO. Trailing throttle oversteer (TTO) is a trade mark of the real car and the iRacing variant is no different. Cheers Tony

Oh well, was quite looking forward to giving it a try, but the system doesn't like my cc details, despite using this card many times before online. Plenty of funds on card. Just checked online, but expiry is this month. Maybe the system didn't like that. :-( -- Pete Ives Remove All_stRESS before sending me an email

Sorry I was thinking of the Ford Spec Racer, which doesn't have lift throttle oversteer, just lift throttle spin, although Ian Lakes setup seems to calm it down a bit. Why aren't the default setups for these cars made to make them easy to drive, since they're intended for new players? The advanced players can then tweak the setups for faster laps, but more difficulty.

That's that then. Hard lines.

This really improves both the accessibility and cost effectiveness of the basic deal. VIR's a good choice of track for the Skip deal as well. I didn't know the track at all before I bought it, but it has some really satisfying variations. Andrew McP

Well the new card arrived today and it states specifically, keep using the old card until it has expired, before using the new one. I have a bank debit card. Generally don't like to use it for these type of things, but I'll take the chance. ;-) -- Pete Ives Remove All_stRESS before sending me an email

Doh! They take Paypal.

Ok, my Paypal has been dormant for many years. Let's hope I can find my login details and that it still works. <g> Or, of course, I could set up a new one. -- Pete Ives Remove All_stRESS before sending me an email

You'd think there'd be a way of suspending people with daft names (via PayPal I presume) and a hideous SR history. I doubt there were hundreds of p*ss-takers. Or maybe there were? >> * Offer has been deactivated due to abuse. > You'd think there'd be a way of suspending people Was this "abuse" explained? Was the "abuse" related to driver behavior, or where players signing up for repeated free trials using different aliases (ignoring the legitimate cases where multiple people share a computer). What was different with these one month free tria accounts from the other ones such as the Radical free one month trial (is that one now also deactivated)? > with daft names The registration information is poorly worded such that it doesn't specify that real names are required, and specificy prohibits providing any personal information about a minor child. "YOUR REAL NAME (or a variation of your name, such as your name followed by a numeral) WILL BE DISPLAYED TO OTHER USERS OF THE SERVICE, AND YOU HEREBY CONSENT TO SUCH DISPLAY. THIS INCLUDES DISPLAY OF YOUR NAME WITH RESPECT TO ANY DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS TAKEN AGAINST YOU AS FURTHER DESCRIBED IN THE SPORTING CODE. The purpose of displaying members' real names is to create accountability to discourage members from engaging in disruptive activity. IF YOU ARE AUTHORIZING A MINOR CHILD TO USE THE SERVICE, YOU MUST NOT PROVIDE TO IRACING.COM ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION ABOUT SUCH CHILD." Based on this, anyone subscribing for a minor child is going to use a "daft" name. Also the wording only mentions that your real name or variation will be "displayed to others". Nothing in that clause states that a real name is a requirement for registering for an account, so some people are going to use "variations". Many know that fictitious names can be used with Pay Pal accounts, but it's also possible to add authorized users with fictitious names to existing credit card accounts.

According to RSC (which I now only visit in read-only mode, having finally despaired at the quality of debate there), someone managed to sign up as 'Poop Face' or something similar via PayPal. There are mutterings about other examples along with wreckers and assorted gross misconduct. That's a shame*, but it does seem to me that it ought to be easy (even at a busy time for new subscriptions) to run through the list of new subscriptions and weed out the riff-raff. The stats system also ought to flag up dangerous drivers very quickly. So you'd think it'd be simple enough to nip hassle in the bud. Apparently not. No doubt what appears to be over-reaction indicated that (a) there's a genera mood behind the scenes that the free demo was a bad idea and/or (b) that the most important thing is iRacing's reputation, and they didn't dare take the time to weed out the rotten eggs. Either way, it's another entertaining episode in the perpetual sim-soap-opera that is iRacing. :-) Andrew McP *I have no problem with people finding fault with iRacing, but deliberately causing grief is just childish.

Highly unlikely, it is meant to be an online based racing service.
