I did an upgrade on my system this week as follows: Athlon 64 3500 to an Athlon-64 X2 4800+ ASUS A8V MB to an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe MB GeForce 6800 GT AGP to an GeForce 7800GTX PCIe (eVGA factory clocked at 470Mhz Core) Creative Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro to Creative X-Fi Elite Pro Also upgraded Power Supply, RAM and Hard Drive, but that doesn't really matter here. My Frame Rates in NR2003 with 2x AA and 16x AS were around 40-60 before. 1280X1024 all options in-game at max. Now with 8xAA and 16xAS and all options in-game at max I'm seeing a _minimum_ of 80, and it is well over 100 most times. This was just a basic test I did prior to the upgrade. Nothing fancy. Just FYI... I'll be installing rFactor this weekend. Half-Life 2 pre-set all settings at the max and looks great. If you get an X2, don't forget to install the AMD patch and the Microsoft Patch to prevent stuttering in games due to the dual-cores. Neither come with motherboards or the processor. -Larry

you should link to those files you are talking about (that way I can use google to find it when I finally do my upgrade) Larry enlightened us with:

I'm very happy for you, that you get such high frames. Not sure what the difference is between 40 and 80, though. I'm also glad to see you have everything up to the complete maximum. Actually, what was the purpose of this post? To show us your rig and high frames? I think it's pretty obvious that with a newer computer you're going to get high frames, no matter if you play the game under water. 8xAA and 16x As and all that crap-- why not say, "Hey, I got me a new computer and see how good it is!" I do not actually see any other purpose for this post, seriously. And that final little "Just FYI..." leads me to believe that the purpose of this post was just to toot your own horn. You can kill me now. :) Alanb

I don't have the links any more (I have the files) but.... The AMD Processor Driver for X2 is on their web site. The MS Patch is WindowsXP-KB896256-v3-x86-ENU.exe There is a major Sticky over at HardOCP.com on this subject with all the info, links, etc... http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=983781 That should do it :) -Larry "PlowBoy" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:CLKEf.506$NR.140@dukeread12...

Sorry I pissed in your wheaties there, Alan. You may now disregard the post. My intention was to show that there IS life left in NR2003, and it can get better with newer hardware. Have a nice day. -Larry "Alan Bernardo" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Ive been up near 100FPS in NR2003 at max for nearly a couple years now. Your other rig must have had issues of some sort if you were only getting 40FPS (though it spec'd ok). Any upgrade I would do now (which Im not) wouldnt do much if anything for NR2003. I dont see a need unless I drop below 60FPS which Im well above in all titles except Lockon. rFactor might see a bit of improvement in quality but not enough to warrant the kind of cash required for that upg (not that I know what you paid but I can guess hehe). Honestly the guys I want to hear from is the guy who can stretch the useful life of his gaming PC the longest between upg's not the shortest ;) Nice rig though. Im more curious why you went dual core this round? Other than a few rare titles what can take advantage of the 2nd core? Hertz is still king imo. Well, since I was doing the upgrade and had to go with a new MB due to the PCIe thing, I decided to just "do it all" and now I can go back to piece-meal upgrades as needed. I don't see anything that should need upgrading in at least a year though. I pretty much tapped this one out. I usually go for the "2nd best" of each item to save a little money, but I said screw it this time :) I live at this machine some 14 hours a day. It is my work machine every day, and my play machine at night. Why screw around :) My only objection in this system would be the A8N32-SLI deluxe MB. It's fine for me as I'm only running one Video Card (SLI is a bit over-the-top for me), and only one PCI card (the sound card). Anything more than that and I would have to recommend others look to a different MB. Maybe the ABIT if 16x SLI was wanted. The problem is the slot arrangements. Man, it is REALLY tight, and if anyone wanted to run SLI on this board, for which it is marketed for (one of the few dual-16x boards on the market) you can totally forget about using ANY PCI card at all. There just isn't room, and if you did manage to get it in there, it would all probably overheat. It's a nice board. It's perfect for me. I just think those running SLI and PCI at the same time would have a terrible time with it. -Larry "Mitch_A" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Z%MEf.6879$[email hidden]...

The low framerates may have been a problem I saw on my x64 rig. I have a 6800 Ultra AGP, and I couldn't understand why I was getting low framerates after dusting off NR2003 - turns out AGP aperture set to 256mb was the problem - set it to 128mb and framerates nearly doubled - GTL seems much smoother too, but I haven't benched. I can't remember why I had it set that high - 1/2 the card memory seems to be the proper setting for any card. Now when I get my X1900XT :)... (provided my friend is still seduced by the GTL videos and buys my 6800). Maybe Larry actually uses his gaming PC for real work, and that's why he got the dual core - me, I just use another PC :). I have heard that there are some gains being coded into the video card drivers for dual core, and a few sims (Falcon 4's latest incarnation) are supposed to really take advantage of it. I don't know what Alan's problem is - I find these posts useful information. If you're considering an upgrade, and someone has already built a system with the specs you are considering it can be very useful to see what kind of framerates they get - especially as most HW review sites totally ignore racing sims (NFS: Underground?!). Thanks for the heads up. I should be installing my new X2 4400+ in my new MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum this weekend. -- Don Burnette "When you decide something is impossible to do, try to stay out of the way of the person that's doing it."
I think I should mention guys, the frame rates I listed were worse case :) -Larry "[email hidden]" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I paid $300 - I was looking for $250 from my friend, and I was going to include building + tweaking his system as well. I couldn't go for less than that really and justify getting an X1900. In all honesty, though, nVidia just annouced the 7800GS AGP, which will probably be the fastest (and lastest) AGP top end card. It'll probably go for something over $300. Couldn't sell mine without mentioning that option as well. Kendt
you guys ever notice the reviews anymore, seem to be worthless? compare the 7800 gs to the PCI gt? So they proving that pci is better? wtf, im trying to decide if the agp solution is better than what I have or what else is available, sheesh. yeah, I see and agree they needed to sho the pci e equivalent, but it should have but then should have included more of the available AGP solutions, that way I could decide where my 4600 or 6600 or 6800 or what not chices fall compared to the 7800gs... right now I am seeing that AGP just sucks on bang per buck, pretty much. might was well spend the dough on new system, but that is just me I guess. AGP has taken the biggest flush down the toilet that I've ever seen with a technology. One minute, we're seeing rants and raves about AGP GeForce 6800 Ultra's and then, suddenly, silence... Nothing... -Larry "PlowBoy" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:6PLFf.1704$NR.619@dukeread12...

Try looking at this article, as it may have what you're looking for. They do their comparo's to a bunch of older stuff, so you can get a pretty decent feel as to how your aging agp card stacks up to the newest whiz bang release. It looks like I could get a HUGE increase in performance just by upgrading my 9800 Pro, and not have to upgrade the whole shebang until at least next year. Anyway, here's the linkage: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/evga_e-geforce_7800_gs_co_superclock_review/ -- See ya in the pits, Dean I have a terrible memory. In fact my memory's so bad I can't remember how long it's been since I've forgotten anything.
