Flame warComplaint about GPL's feedback sparks troll accusations

Mark Jeangerard complained that GPL gave him too little feedback on braking, apex distance and steering angle to avoid mistakes. Some called it trolling, while Jan Verschueren explained that GPL's moving viewpoint genuinely troubles him. David G Fisher listed his criticisms of GPL and Jens Kruuse rebutted them, and the thread revived in January as Alan Bernardo and ymenard traded accusations about anti-GPL trolling.

I just finished 47 laps at Zandy, I had intended to go 90 but... the Internet, you know? Anyway, in that 47 laps I made no less than 400 mistakes. The reason behind every last mistake I made was the inability to tell how much brake pressure I had, how far I was from the apex, and how much steering angle I was using. I can't tell you how much fun that was. I was going to list every game I've played that allows that sort of silly information to be transmitted to the driver when I realized it would take much less time to simply list the games which don't offer such trivial feedback as sense of speed, acceleration, and position: GPL Nx ICR I can hardly wait for the next papy game. Hopefully it will be something I've always wanted, maybe CanAm or the 1990 F1 season or WSC or ALM. That would be really cool. It would suck if one of the premier series was represented by one of those awful realistic and accurate games. You know, the kind that relay all the pertinent information to the driver... because, I really don't make that many mistakes.... What would I do with all that extra time on the track? -- "Racing! - Science for the action minded." mark
Trolling much? If you want to criticize the game, just come out and do it. And give us some evidence of why/how it does not do something correctly, and then show us how it SHOULD be done. Don't just bitch and moan like a kid. Jesse

Mark maybe you should try a game that is not so hard for you. There are thousands of us that do not have a problem. Maybe you do not have the dexterity for it. Try need for speed. It is much easier. "mark jeangerard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:VZ5R7.7515$[email hidden]...

Mark is serious and sincere... the slightly moving viewpoint in GPL throws his perception in some way. On the other hand he loves GPL to bits because it lets him race other human players. He just feels hampered because it doesn't give him as accurate a feedback as, for example, GP3 2K. Which is not to say he's not a devastatingly quick and consistent GPL racer, just it doesn't allow him to be as effortlessly accurate as in some other sims. I'm in the reverse position... I lack info to save situations in GP3 2K when compared to GPL. But perhaps my driving is not accurate enough to begin with and GPL is just more forgiving to being "thereabouts". I wouldn't have said all that. If you don't like GPL you'll be branded as a troll. It's best to say you like GPL rather than that you don't. It's a decent game, I'll admit. But if anyone claims that GPL is not the best of the best, then you're a no-good piece of driftwood, forever at sea, without a home, a family, a soul. It's a barren place to be. Wait a second... Zandy has 12 corners. 400 mistakes in 47 laps, that's 8.5 spins per lap, or a spin each ~1.4 corner. Two things here. It's tough to please people when it comes to the amount of feedback being given by the car. Something that I think race sim developers could learn from flight sims (aside from "training missions" which ISI has been slowly working into their games) would be the addition of ways of configuring the feedback being received. Obvious ones would be the additions of peripheral vision (a'la European Air War or Mig Alley) and mouse-controlled cockpit cameras representing a full range of head motions. Also, I've always wished I could tune the degree to which weight transfer moved the camera, so that at a minimum setting you'd have something like Rally Masters, at medium you'd be closer to a Papy or ISI game, and at maximum something like Nascar Heat (I haven't played GP3 in a year, so I honestly don't remember which part of the spectrum it would fall on). I think with just a few configurable options and feature additions sim developers could go a long way towards making up for the lack of "feel" that you get in a sim. I have to admit it's somewhat disappointing going from Mig Alley, where I can 'see' planes with my peripheral vision and can 'feel' gravity regardless of where I'm looking by having a static artifical horizon display, to Grand Prix Legends where I can't see a car I'd be able to see in real life out of the corner of my eye without looking to the side and using an undriveable camera position or Rally Masters where I look at the replay and discover I spun 15 times because I was transferring too much weight to the front wheels and couldn't tell from the cockpit camera. Just my 2 cents. "Jan Verschueren" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:<[email hidden]>...

I would be interested to hear from Mark and have him tell us what racing games he like better and why. GPL is not for everyone. Hi Jens, you know, that Hesperiidae Latreille looks a lot like this bug that has been living in my attico for a week or so recently, until the cleaning maid got to it. But I'm not in Russia. Makes me wonder. Impressive also the Geometridae. I'm sure that one doesn't have probs getting around corners. When the head has passed the corner the rear end doesn't even know there is a corner yet :-) Achim "Jens H. Kruuse" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ii7R7.6203$[email hidden]...

I didn't expect one "yes". :-) Weather. Pitting. Ghost mode. Better graphics and more detailed tracks. The graphics engine in GPL looked nice for the time, but ran like s**t on anything but the fastest computer (people insisted it was the physics calculations). Remove the 36 fps limit. I'm not too sure about the AI. Many people seem to think they should use a different approach. But by far, the most important improvement needed would be accurate grip levels. The cars back then did not slide as much as they do in GPL. Innacurate grip levels are a HUGE mistake in any sim. It's the main reason why I don't play it. Yes, would be nice to be able to fix small problems by entering the pit. Or have the mechanic tell you: "The engine cannae take it, Jimmy my boy." Ghost mode. That one took me by surprice! Most people would consider this a hot-lapping feature, but I can see how it would be an excellent tool to learn about the right lines through corners. Nice. Graphics. I'm happy with all the add-ons. Looks marvelous now - didn't out of the box by *current* standards. I know the concept for some is hard to grasp, but not everyone enjoys GPL, be it unrealistic grip levels , time devoted for practice or just plain uninterested in that particular era. What may be the best for one could be looked upon as crap by another.
Don't tell that to the diehards here: what they say goes. You ought to see the posts on CivIII over at csibgs, where to some, a select 50, possibly, it's the best game ever created in the History of the world. GPL is a nice simulation, but there are others too. [Here I will typically get a replay such as, "Name one."]. But one shouldn't be bothered by such small things. GPL is a nice game but by my estimation doesn't deserve the accolades it gets from the elite here-- so it goes. Move on. Dude, why must you always respond to what I say about GPL? What is so trollish about saying that though some believe that GPL is similar to a Magi bearing gifts, others compare it less favorably to other simulation games? I think if we all realize this (and, sorry, it's the GPLers that need some divine inspiration here), then all will be better. So I attack you for attacking me and then I drop such petty play and move on to the issue at hand. Alanb "ymenard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:Eaq18.15252$[email hidden]...

What do you mean, 'what is so trollish'? It's obvious you've been around for more than two days...hence, you should know the general opinion of GPL in RAS...which, while maybe not as obvious as bashing the F-Body in alt.autos.camaro.firebird, or posting 'Don't buy Soyo' in alt.comp.periphhs.mainboard.soyo, is along the same lines, and hence considered trolling. I still haven't seen anything that I'd prefer playing to GPL (well, there's WSC, but mentioning that would cause an even bigger flamewar, so forget I said it, OK...). No reason everyone else should agree, though - after all, I've just played the demo of IL-2 Sturmovik, which most flight simmers seem to be raving about, and while it's clearly well done, it doesn't give me any particular "wow" feeling. Same for GPL for many people, I expect. -- "After all, a mere thousand yards... such a harmless little knoll, really" - Raymond Mays on Shelsley Walsh. And did I not bring simracing into the discussion when speaking of GPL, claiming that there were other simulations besides GPL? And aren't a majority of your posts nearly about GPL and if there not they are about slamming people? All this adds up to one thing. Killfile. Alanb
