Rouen GP league race report in GPL

EldredP reminded regulars of an informal Grand Prix Legends online race at Rouen. Afterwards Asbjorn Bjornstad reported that Jan Verschueren won by surviving in a damaged car while the rest of the field crashed or retired, and participants traded accounts of spins, blown engines and the difficulty of driving the Lotus there. Talk turned to future races and the time-zone difficulty for an Australian participant.

I was pissed. The combination of Piotr's final statements and a couple of ill-timed clock smashes totally messed up my concentration. Of course, it had to happen in the run-up to the hairpin...<sigh> I didn't even save my part of the replay to review... Jan - send me the newspaper, please. Err... I sort of didn't save it, sorry. Do have the results export if that's any use to you. We only got about 1/3rd of the way in (and that's only 'cos I thought you were still running so I continued when Asbjorn first told me), so I wrote it off as a bust. When driving I don't have time to read any chat... I noticed an exchange, but didn't read it, what happened? Jan. =--- "Pay attention when I'm talking to you boy!" -Foghorn Leghorn. Thanks much, but you should have stressed the word "lucky"... I could have stuffed it 10 times over with the condition my car was in and every other contender was either taken out or stuffed it himself. I had a rather hectic first lap. I got a good start and trusted Roger to go side by side through that first kink. Unfortunately Roger either didn't expect me to make a fight of it (gave him only half the track) or misjudged my position relative to him (there was some warp involved). Our get together had a knock on effect for other drivers, for which I apologise, but somehow I scraped through mostly unharmed. Nevertheless, knowing the way I set up my car it's rather vulnerable to unstability under braking through damage, I took it easy into Scierie... at which point someone came screaming passed. This same person then shot across the apex of the bend across the track again and off the other side. I proceded to drive the turn as normal and was then struck by this car again... whether he was trying to recover or just bounced back, I don't know, but this time I copped some real damage and I was all over the place when I used the center pedal. Apart from coming unstuck on several occasions, I managed to keep a rythm which was about 1 sec per lap slower than Asbjorn (the class of the field again), untill he finally ended his run through a concentration lapse. At only just over Int/Pro "Long" distance we can hardly call this a GP "win". Think we should have a re-run of this one. Jan. =--- "Pay attention when I'm talking to you boy!" -Foghorn Leghorn. Thanks, prouder of the 2nd one as I'm slightly more deserving of it, IMO. For one... I had to beat you to get it (don't tell anyone I had 70 extra HP though ;-)). Seven and a half seconds in the end... pretty intense. ;-) Too bad about the date mix-up on the Rouen race... you could have kept Asbjorn honest and on his toes, allowing us to get more laps in. Strange thing, it usually the talented that are the lucky ones... > sec per lap slower than Asbjorn (the class of the field again), untill he > finally ended his run through a concentration lapse. I'm not sure about the class of the field thing, M Peters qualified a second faster than me, and he ran a sec a lap faster than me in the first three laps, then he got bored or blew up, I don't know. He was sitting by the side of the road as I passed him. After that I was on my own for most of the race. Passed one backmarker and braked a bit too late after the long straight once. Thought; hey this seems to go ok, 1/3 of the race gone and I'm way ahead, but this is where the hard part (keeping concentration) starts, and promptly upshifted instead of braked for T2. Tried to save it, but ended up in the trees and lost the left rear. > At only just over Int/Pro "Long" distance we can hardly call this a GP > "win". Think we should have a re-run of this one. Hmm. Winning after 1/3 of the distance is called outclassing, not "hardly a win." And as Eldred has said that he hates the track with a passion, I'm not sure he'll agree to a rerun. -- -asbjxrn

I think he blew an engine. He made a couple of comments about it as I was going through turns 1 and 2. Like, "Oh well, I'm out - blown engine. Have a good race." Then his disconnect message came up. When I came out of 3, leading to the lefthander before the hairpin, I got 2-3 clock smashes. It messed up my concetration, I blew my braking point going to the hairpin, and got impaled on the tires... :( Eldred -- Dale Earnhardt, Sr. R.I.P. 1951-2001 Homepage - http://www.umich.edu/~epickett F1 hcp. +16.36...Monster +360.54... Reasonable hour. In general I can get pings to the US around 400, which is good for racing, though beyond 500 things get a bit sketchy. Ben EldredP wrote in message <[email hidden]>...
