also, it has some bad control issues that need to be resolved. if you are
facing in a direction different to the one the game thinks you should be in,
it won't let you turn the wheel anywhere else but back onto the track.
for example. casino square monaco. monsoon, with slick tyres on (i know they
have grooves but you know what i mean - it's the only way to drive :-) i
lose it and decide that any attempt to stay on the road will result in a
collision with the barrier, so i steer away from the road to go down the
escape road - the big built in spaces seen at mirabeau. but oh no, the game
won't let me go down there, it drives me into the wall instead. turning is
impossible. steering in the pit lane is impossible. steering around a corner
on the outside of an AI is impossible. turn-in oversteer is impossible and
so is roll oversteer (even if you tweak the setups to deliberately get
some - it doesn't happen). i like to drive oversteering cars. why won't it
let me!!
somebody make it better, please!
Are GP3's physics and steering really that bad?
Nick G complained that GP3's physics were poor and steering would not let him turn freely. Replies said he almost certainly had steering help and other aids enabled, and that GP3's physics are decent once aids are off. Others argued the engine is still simplistic compared with F1RC, and the exchange included some insults.

You haven't got "Steering Help" turned on have you? Check *both* the
cockpit and the controller setup where steering help is adjusted.
Also check "Auto Right".

There is limited steering available in the pit lane.
I've driven around the outside of an AI car in a corner.
I've had turn-in oversteer like crazy and like to tune it down a lot.

Not sure what you mean by roll oversteer.

I get oversteer like crazy, especially on some of the setups that
I've downloaded from the Internet. I have to do a certain amount of
work on these to remove most of the oversteer as it doesn't suit my
driving style.
>somebody make it better, please!
Without knowing more, I'd say that you've got one or more computer
driving aids turned on.
Also, I suggest that you download various patches and updates
(official and unofficial ones) that enhance the driving experience.
GPxPatch, GPEdit and GP3Video are the ones worth getting (GPxPatch is
amazing! It does *lots* of things and has support for additional
sounds....you can now hear other cars and also get radio messages
from the pits as well as hearing Murray Walker screaming!). Also try
the track updates and also new tracks. And there's also no car
shapes, liveries, carsets, etc. Check out here for most of these...

Try turning off steering help.

switch the driving aids off!!! fixes everything.

if you can't get turn-in oversteer, then you don't know how. even on the
default setups which are setup for understeer, i can get any amount of
oversteer i want turning in... just a matter of how late you want to hold
onto the brakes, and how much steering lock.

there's nothing wrong with the physics engine.. of the modern F1 sims it's

It's the same shitty below-par physics we had with GP2

'IMO' the physics engine is very simplistic and functional it feels nice but
'IMO' is in no way realistic. If you look at the physics editors for GP3 and
F1RC the physics engine of F1RC is obviously far more advanced than GP3's,
it's just a pity the AI is so bad and it messes up my GPL driving otherwise
I would play it allot.

GP3 physics are fine, you have some sort of controller problem or something.
Make sure you have all the "aids" turned off.

Yes they are very good, you will learn how to gain advantage of these high
levels of detail if you read on...

You obviously ahve steering help on which makes the cars pretty much drive
without any steering input, or very little anyway meaning yuo haven't much
control making the otherwise good physics usless. Turn it off and you'll
ahve no problems.

Read above, all caused by steering help in the controller menu.

to my GPL setup (but without the clunky old cars of course!) I find that if
I turn off all of the assistances (even things like reduce with car speed,
low sensitivity zone etc) the handling is extremely realistic. I do
struggle to drive with throttle help off though, yet in GPL I don't have any
problems without throttle help.

No way. Since upgrading my sys. I can now run this game at less than
100% cpu occ. finally, and I must say that it's fun. I've only been
playing it some 3 weeks, but things have definitely moved on from GP2.
Whereas with that game, once the back end went it was goodbye/canned
spin time, I'm finding with GP3 and can catch back end slides quite
easily, though not always and riding the curbs has now become possible
instead of the complete nightmare it used to be - a major frustration
when the real F1 cars were able to do so all the time. Also, what I
have learnt in GPL has so far been reasonably useful with GP3.
Ok, it's been at least a couple of years, if not longer, since the last
time I played GP2, so my memories of how that game felt have long since
faded but those were 2 of the major gripes about GP2 that really used to
piss me off. However, without getting the old warhorse back out and
running it I'll stick to my opinion that this is a GP* upgrade and it
ain't that bad physics wise as it used to be. Guess I'll have to get
hold of some of the other current crop of F1 sims that are doing the
rounds in order to compare. That F1RC sounds like fun. :)

One thing that shows the physics was changed at a fundamental level is
steering while you drive backward. GP2 just would not do that. In GP3 it
feels natural. Not much use in a race I know ;-)
Also the push on the wheel and the searching for grip when powering out of a
turn (ff wheel of course) shows GP3 is really modelling the basic aspects of
the car imo.

where they can go past you, even if you're crawling along. And if
you're side by side, they can be very ruthless and stupid.
I think you're right, it feels nice, is good fun, but it is still
fairly simplistic. Canned spins are still there IMO too. We need a
modern GPL!!! But it is still good fun, and one of the best F1 games
about. Just the best of a bad lot :(

Hey, traction-control is back in F1, so don't feel *too* guilty in
using it! ;-)
However, the satisfaction is much greater if you've driven with
throttle help off. It's a lot more difficult to drive and I struggle
with it too.
