My son's friend just got an AMD 1.4ghz chip + ddr memory with an Asus mb.
the bios is reporting 60 degrees Celsius, which was about 9c hotter than my
1.1ghz. Is he baking the chip or is that still within temperature limits?

Is 60C too hot for an Athlon 1.4GHz?
Dave Henrie asked whether 60C was safe for a friend's new Athlon 1.4GHz. Replies recommended correctly applied thermal paste, better heatsinks and case fans, though some noted ASUS boards often report high temperatures. The thread included a petty spat about heatsink lapping and AMD versus Intel.

Automated summary.
Hi Dave,
It sounds a touch hot, most of the Athalons 1.3 up, I not only have the
heatsink and fan on, but also have TWO case airflow exit fans as well,
you'll see the positions for these above the serial & parallel ports and
poss also on the front at the bottom depending on the case.
Also make sure the glue for the heatsink has been applied because in most
cases the heatsink NEEDS to be 'flush' on the processor.
Possibly overkill - but you can't be too sure.

Matt Wilson

That's kinda warm but the chip should survive it. A lot depends on what kind
of fan/heatsink combo is installed. We build a lot of Athlon systems and use
Coolermaster's EP5-6151 unit (www.coolermaster.com). So far, it
characteristically drops CPU temps at least 10 degrees lower than most OEM
units, and it doesn't break the bank. Another thing we do is, whatever paste
or pad or pink glop comes on the unit, remove it all, and make sure the surface
of the unit where it contacts the CPU is absolutely smooth, flat and burr/pit
free. Make sure the CPU die itself is also clean, then apply a thin film of
quality heatsink grease to the surface of the die only, don't slather it over
the whole CPU. The thermal interface between the die and the heatsink is
critical, so you can't be too careful here. Once that's been taken care of,
check your temps, and if they're still not to your liking, start adding case
fans or run with the side cover off. Good luck.

Yea, a good way to do this is to get some fine grit sand paper and
smooth the surface of that heat sink down. Some people even sand down
the cpu core, but I haven't done that myself.
Nice OE AMD. Why should an end user have to go to these extremes with a
chip? Oh yeah forgot AMD 1.4 is $8 cheaper than the P4. Doesnt seem worth
5-10 fps IMO. Yes, I forgot the MB is $30 more. Thats $38 more to have a
chip that runs at 104*F avg.(38* C) using OEM fan etc.
Heres a screen shot of my processors temp after leaving N4. It will drop
to 96*F when at idle.

Rubber feet are to stabilize and take pressure off the processor when the
heatsink and fan are clamped down. It doesnt take much paste to be
sufficient. here is a link for some good info on applying thermal compound.

What a sucker! I made that post to elicit the exact response above.
You're just a puppet in my hands.
I know it's called lapping, but it means sanding and some people may
not know what lapping means.
Is owning both unimaginable to you? Whats next pics of my systems? Enjoy

I too, just bought an Athlon1400 with an ASUS MB. Couldn't get it working
properly for a week or so, couldn't install Windows, kept crashing. Temp
was averaging 60 degrees.
Then I applied a very thin layer of thermal paste between the processor and
the heatsink. Average temperature dropped by 12 degrees. Windows then
installed fine, and everything now works fine. It warms up to about 57
after a few hours use though, if I leave the case on, so I'm leaving it off
for now. Need to get a case fan.
Paul
Dave, you MUST have thermal paste, otherwise you'll have thermal
fusion! Only on the die of the CPU, which contacts the actual
heatsink, none on the ceramic section with the resistors, bridges,
etc.
The rubber feet are purely to stabilise the heatsink and keep it flat
against the die surface, and make sure it doesn't 'rock' to one side,
creating an air gap.
I'd suggest that you should be able to get the temp down to below 50
deg. My 1ghz athlon runs at around 45 when oc'ed to 1.4 ghz, so and
original 1.4 ghz chip should be doing better. More ventilation through
your case may also be required.

You are easily manipulated, yes.
I've got a Global Win CAK-38 Copper Heat Sink with one case fan for my 1.33
GHz. I'm running it on the ASUS A7A266 MoBo. After playing games all day
in 30C ambient heat it's running at 42C. While it may be a bit on the noisy
side, it REALLY does it's job. Just use some silver compound when you mount
the heat sink, and you won't even have to think about it afterwards.

60 deg C.....way too hot, Dave. Sounds to me like he either did not apply
thermal paste ....or didn't apply it properly.
Reference temps (this is the last "race box" I built about three weeks ago):
1.333 AMD overclocked to 1.7+ (multiplier oc) runs 32 deg C at idle (75
deg F ambient room temp) and 35 deg C after "hours" of N4. I ran 3DMark2001
(loop) for 16 hours and got it to 36 deg C once! Chassis temps on this unit
run about 33-36 deg C, and case temps run 24-27 deg C.
**Cooling system specs: Intake-front (1), 90 mm fan; Exhaust-rear (2),
90 mm fans (one above power supply, one below in PCI slot area), Blowhole
(1), 120mm fan (side mount over video card area); CPU fan is Swiftech
MC-462-A (with Delta fan); Thermal paste: Arctic Silver. All power supply
cabling is zip-strapped to case sides/surfaces and IDE cables are 5-part
stripped, and shrink-wrapped (presents an airflow profile about the size of
a finger).
The only drawback to this system is its loud. However, I only use it as a
"race box" so with the 800 watts surround sound system cranked....who cares?
One side benefit: You can air condition your house with this unit in the
summer.....just stick it in a window near your race desk.....lol....

On an ASUS MoBo, it's not uncommon to see temps in the high 60's, it may
be that ASUS measures the temp differently

Same motherboard and about the same temps here (with 1.33 AMD), actually
55-60 deg C with sidelid off up to 77 C with it on (no extrafans in case and
a bit of poor airflow, ordered a casefan but still waiting for it) , seems
to run just fine at 77C with one exception it seems to increase the risk of
getting booted then doing onlineracing, maybee something else is getting to
hot inside since motherboard temp says 55-58 deg C then the sidelid is on
