I have hit the wall. GPL will not run. After many posts to this wonderful
newsgroup and with the assistance of many I still fail to get GPL to run.
This could be longish so please bare with me..
First my system:
AMD 900 Athlon
ASUS A7V
256 mb
ASUS 7100 MX TV OUT
Soundblaster LIVE 5.1 Platinum
DVD & Burner
I have the latest drives, I have even tried both ASUS 12.60 and Nvidia
latest for video.
I am at a loss.
Game will install no worries. Add latest patch OK. Add D3D patch and this is
where probs start. Can get into cockpit but after 1-2 sec it freezes.
Ctl+Alt+Del won't help. Must reset computer. Also Wingman wheel is acting
strange and will not allow me to calibrate wheel as wheel. sometimes have to
have gear paddles as wheels.
Also when I have the new tracks installed it won't allow me to even get into
the cockpit. It says that track not located, weekend cancelled.
Are there people experiancing these prob. Could it be hardware/software
conflict. I have re formatted, reinstalled heaps of times.
Just wanting to enjoy all the new tracks and changes as I haven't played for
sometime.
Do I sound desparate...not ashamed to say I am.
Many thanks in advance.
Russ.
Well Russ....I'm having the same problem (exactly) on one
computer....different one on the other. Both attempting to install GPL
after a year or so of not having it installed. The computer most similar to
yours....does the exact same thing (can't make it to T1 in Nurb without
complete lockup). What version of Windows...and DX you running?
The other computer is not even that good....can't even enter the track
(says: "Can't initialize replay system. Canceling Weekend.)....and that
system is using DX 8.0 and Win98SE (same as above)...but has a V5 card
installed in it. Both systems have tons of ram (PC133 on the V5 box at 768
megs and PC2100 on the GF3 box, 512 megs).

The machine where you get the "Can't initialise replay" message is the one
with 768Mb of RAM isn't it? I know this because this problem occurs when
GPL is run on a machine with more than 512Mb of RAM. I believe you can work
round this by adding:
[ Replay ]
replayMemoryOverride = 40000
to your core.ini file. The number is the amount of RAM to use for replays.
If you limit it to 256000 maximum then GPL should work on that PC. Someone
raised the same question on our tech problem forum here:

Sorry but I can't help you with the second PC.

Hi!
Phil Lee already answered that question with the failing replay system so I
will concentrate on the other one.
What I've found out is that in most of the cases where GPL freezes with a
GeForce card there is some kind of hardware conflict in the system which
doesn't show neither in the system manager nor while playing other games.
Mostly the gfx card shares an IRQ with some other PCI device. Especially
GeForce cards are very sensitive about this. Make sure that it gets its very
own IRQ and you'll be fine.
Regards
Crash
Tom,
Sorry to say but I am glad that someone esle is having the same probs.
I am running Windows ME, why I changed I 'II never know and I am running
DirectX8.0.
Just as a side note I used to be able to get around 3066 on 3D mark 2001
benchmark, now I can't even get 1000!
Thanks.

Does GPL run ok with a fresh install in "software only" mode, with NO
addons? Which version of DirectX are you using? I use DirectX 8.0a and don't
have any problems. I *think* I read somewhere that some people using the
Soundblaster Live Plat have had a few probs with GPL. Have you tried
different drivers for it? Is your wheel USB or, is it connected via the SB's
Gameport? If you are that desperate, why not simply remove the SB, and see
if GPL will run properley without it? I did have a similar problem to you
about a month ago, where GPL would load, but I could only drive a few 100
yds say, at the ring, and the PC would freeze, with only the reset button to
get out of it! I finally found the "carsound patch" was causing the problem.
(Still not sure why). As soon as I put the "original" GPL.exe back,
everything was fine again! I used to be able to use the carsound patch with
no problems before I got my Herc Ge-Force MX 2 32MB (Love this card so can
live without the patch <g>).
As for the track not loaded/cancelling weekend. Whenever that happens the
problem is either an addon track "incorrect" in your 67Season.ini, a double
entry for a track or tracks, or, NOT having the number of tracks in the
track folder coincide exactly with the number at the top of 67Season.ini
If this is happening with ALL of your tracks, it is almost always a CAR
causing the problem. Try running the game with NO car/other updates at all.
(I suppose you have tried all this though huh?).
Myself, I would also disconnect the Steering wheel, and remove it's
software, as you have a steering/GPL prob, and try running GPL with just the
"standard Keyboard" setup, and see if the game runs ok. GPL, on starting,
immediately checks for the presence of anything other than the standard
keys, and if it finds it, will present you automatically with the
Callibration screen, so try without the wheel connected as I suggested.
Sometimes I "forget" to switch on my TM Ferrari FF wheel, and GPL defaults
to the keyboard. I have to go back to Windows, switch on and, re-calibrate!
I would also make sure that your MX GFX card is NOT overclocked. My Herc is
known to be an excellent GFX card for overclocking, but I had some GPL
problems even slightly o'clocked, so now I run it at "normal" speed. I use
the "official" Nvidia Det 3 6.50 drivers and have had NO PROBLEMS
whatsoever with them in ANY game. Have you checked under device manager for
a conflict anywhere with any of your hardware? Yout GFX card is not
"sharing" an IRQ is it? I have read of someone having this problem before
too!
Anyway, try these thing out. If none of these suggestions solves the
problem. Post again to this thread, and I am sure I will think of something.
Can't keep a fellow GPL'er from the best Sim in the World can we? Sorry this
is so long, but I am trying to suggest anything I can think of, and you said
you were desperate!
Good luck, and please post back either way.

Thanks for your tips. I will go through and try removing the sound card. I
have had to working with SBLive Plat but I am prepared to lose that to play
the game.
More on....

When I go into the track area there is a file named 67season however it
isn't marked as 67season.ini. Should this be the case.

Correct have tried this and ran OK altho graphics as you would expect were
poor. It also ran OK with latest patch for game 1.2.0.1 I think but bring in
the D3D patch and probs start. I am currently reading up on IRQ and PCI as
Crash suggested. Pretty dumb when it comes to computers.

I've installed SBL! on 5 different 'putas, and on 4 of them the elaborate
pgms. that came on the CD would either bring the system to its knees or
crash it altogether. I'd recommend taking the "Install drivers only" option
from the CD and see if that doesn't help.

effective on Nvidia video cards. FSAA stands for something like; Full
Screen Anti Alias which means it cleans up the picture and removes most of
the jagged little lines that remind you your looking at a computer screen.
FSAA is enabled in your 3dfx tools section. There is a penalty speedwise
for running fsaa. Most folks who used to run at 1024x760 have lowered their
screen resoulution to 800x600 and with the FSAA it usually looks better.
Nvidia's first attempt at FSAA was a software hack, it was slower and
didn't look as good. on thier new card the GF3, they have a new method of
FSAA that looks pretty good(equal to 3dfx) but the rumours were the speed
penalty would not happen. From what i've seen here, it did. Anytime you
add a feature that works on your screen, like FSAA, it's bound to slow down
your output.
