Hello,
I am looking for a bit of feedback on modern F1 titles...
I currently own F1 2000 CS and with all the add on's, patches, etc, etc am
quite happy with it, but I've also seen quite a few add-on's for GP3 and
have heard good things about F1 Racing Champ from Ubisoft.
For those who own all three, or who have tested them, how would you rate
them?
Is it worth my while to pick up GP3 and F1RC knowing that F1RC ver 2 and F1
2001 (by EA) are both due out this fall, or should I sit tight with what I
have?
Also... Anyone know if GP4 will ever become a reality? I've read lately that
it's dead, but I do recall when they released GP3 that there was lots of
talk about GP4 coming out someting this year.
Thanks for the advice!
Jay J
Comparing F1 2000 Championship Season, F1 Racing Championship and GP3
A user asked which modern F1 title to choose between F1 Championship Season 2000, Ubisoft's F1 Racing Championship and Grand Prix 3. Replies were split: some favoured GP3 for stability, AI and add-ons, others F1CS2000 for its AI, and F1RC admirers praised its looks and physics while critics faulted its AI. The consensus was that each had strengths and choice was a matter of taste.
Automated summary.

I'm sure Iain didn't mean to be so short with you and that he's a much nicer
fellow than this post suggests--
I think what he meant to say was, "Anything but F1RC."
. . . but I could be mistaken . . . :-)

I think you may be fairly new to ras, so welcome! What you'll find here is
a world full of reasonable, rational people with no axes to grind at all,
and every one has a very very rich and wonderful sense of humour. You'll
see only relevant points made, and no-one has any bias or hidden agendas.
Enjoy!

Thanks Iain,
No I'm actually not new here, but it's been a while since I've had a chance
to catch up on things here, I wasn't aware there had been so much discussion
previously concerning F1RC, sounds like it's not worth the effort.
I saw a pole over at High Gear (I think) that asked which title you'd
purchase next, F1 2001 vs. F1RC 2 and they were about dead even, so I
assumed that F1RC was on the same level as GP3 and F1 2000 CS.

GP3
Looks Crap, Sounds Crap, Drives Crap but the weather is nice
F1RC
AI's Crap, Physics Crap, but it Looks Nice
F1CS2K
Looks Average, Physics is Average, AI is average.
F1WGP
Looks Average, Physics Crap, AI Crap.
the bottom line...
There is no good Modern F1 game for the PC.
<sarcasm>
I've heard of something called PLG - or LPG, or GLP or something like that -
it's 1960's F1 Racing - that's supposed to be quite good - has some crappy
online racing element that's not very popular, not a lot of fun, and hardly
ever entertaining and full of horrible people :
</sarcasm>
There's also a new titile due in about 5 - 10 months (depends where you
looks!) called WSC (world sports car) that will be flexible enough to allow
a full F1 season to be created for it - combining the best GFX I've seen,
rumoured to be the best Physics there is, the most flexible system for add
ons, and track detail to DIE for! I'm probably not going to fall sucker to
buying another racing game until WSC comes out unless I hear VERY good
things about it - then again - someone will say something nice about any
racing game just because somehow it appeals to them in a funny way !!

What you have to do here is cut through the sarcasm of the hardened few.
What Jerry meant was that I (and others) love F1RC but he (and others)
don't!
From a purely personal point of view, I would say that my current favourite
of the 3 you mentioned is definitely F1RC. I am still a big fan of F1CS,
and in fact I was a major defender of it and its predecessor F12K on this
group when all around were slagging it off, but it just doesn't feel right
after spending a long time on F1RC. From my perspective, the driving model
is just too forgiving, and doesn't feel right any more.
I never really got on with GP3 as I felt that it wasn't really any great
progression on GP2 - a major disappointment after such a long wait, and the
majority on ras (sort of) agreed.
F1RC is not however without its problems - mainly in the AI performance.
You can get rammed for no particularly good reason at times, and the AI cars
can pile into each other rather than finding a way round a stopped car.
There is a theory that the AI improves as you go on, but I'm not going to
get into that one! One of the main controversies with F1RC on this group is
the lack of a patch from Ubi. They have been making silly excuses for some
time now about FIA approval and God knows what else as the reason for the
late delivery of a patch. They need to get that released very soon.
Still, as I said earlier, each of the 3 titles has its fans and detractors,
so it's really up to you to try them and see for yourself. Go to a store
with a good returns policy!
Good luck!

Jay,
To me the best to drive and the most stable, system wise, is GP3. With a
nice, fast system GP3 does not look too bad graphically. I do like the way
the car handles and also think the AI is the best of the lot. If you do the
huge 2001 update (90 meg) and run GPX for the add-ons, you'll have a pretty
nice racing sim. Too bad though that there is no Internet play.
The cars in F1CS2000 drive way too heavily. F1RC was fun at first but then
I lost interest. There are too many quirks and system mishaps in that game,
making the experience less than enjoyable. Plus the AI is not good.
That's my brief take,
Alanb

Yeah, that's the one I like best of the current contenders, too. It doesn't
do anything "best", but IMO it's the most overall fun and the least
troublesome. With some excellent 3rd-party patches that add features and
improve certain aspects of the sim tremendously--especially the sound--it's
hard to beat.
Iain represents the difference among the three very well. F1RC is
definitely the "best looking", but it's issues are a killer for me. The sim
pukes on my system for some reason, so I can't be a judge as to it's
features, or lack thereof--highly frustrating, considering its looks and
evident potential.
But like many others, I have to say that none of the top modern-era
contenders are truly satisfying, which may in part be due to the existence
of a little gem called GPL.

I'm not a big fan of F1CS2k's tracks (compared
