A friend of mine had bigtime problems with racing GPL and N4 online,
his pings were miserable and he got way too much disco's.
So we did a complete reinstall of Windows 98 (his pc was a total mess
:) , reinstalled GPL, I changed his modem for another one and we tried
GPL.
It seemed to be solved, his ping times were normal now in VROC.
We went online and tried a race. Everything seemed ok, good quality,
no warpings.
But after a minute or 5 there was a message at the top of the screen,
something like '10035 Error on Network Device'.
The quality bar shot to the top and we got a disco.
This happens every time on his pc..
I mess around with his core.ini after that, there's something like
'use network' in the core.ini and I set it off, but it didn't help.
If this is any help: he used to have a network card in his pc but not
anymore. Maybe GPL is still looking for that network card somehow?
Any ideas/help would be very much appreciated..
I want to kick his butt online :)

He has the same provider as me, same area, and I allmost never have
disco's..

You might try one of the various modem connection tweak progs out there, and
use small packets and limit it to 26400 with a modem string. It is odd you
are getting 'network device' error without discoing from the isp tho, that's
the only time I get that error. You might run the SysMon prog in the
background to see if it catches any strange activity on the modem.

I get the same error when I race N4 online. But it is not always it discos
from the server, sometimes it manages to get the quality and ping back to
normal.
I recently signed up for ADSL but the provider have some problems getting it
to work. So in the meanwhile I have to use a 56k modem. And the connection
has goten really bad since I signed for that ADSL thing. So I guess the ISP
have done something with the line.
But I don't think it has to do with any networkcard I got this error message
before I even owned a networkcard.

I had this exact same problem. Win98 and 56k LT WinModem. I'd get "Error on
Network Device" and then about 10-20 seconds later be disconned from the
server. Happened *every* time I raced online and I never managed more than
maybe one minute on track before the error kicked in. My modem connection
was still working properly and I was still online when I got back to the
Windows desktop.
Solution? I updated my modem drivers to Lucent version 5.97.
I now connect at either 52,000 or 53,333 bps and have relatively few
problems racing online (I get discoed about once every 10 races, which I
guess is about once every 10-15 hours, including practice and qualifying).
Hope that helps

I allready replaced his modem for another one, but both modems gave
the same problems. But the first modem was a Winmodem, the second one
is an old 28k8 modem.. Thx for the tip, I'll try a newer modem from
work on his pc..
