I had avoided firewalls like Black Ice and Zone Alarm because of the
complications with online racing/quaking etc. But lately my computer has
really bogged down, I finally caved in and installed Zone Alarm. I have
traced a user who has been using my @home connection to send mulitple PING
commands to a server. I'm assuming a DNS attack.
My computer had been running very slow...I thought F1cs2k was really
getting doggy..almost uninstalled it...but the 30 or so copies of a program
on my system seem to be the trouble.
I also think he sicked a virus on my system because a certain file keeps
popping up and replicating itself. VXSD.exe
Once ZA was up I had 5 alerts in just a few minutes. The ZA log showed
about two pages of ping commands...Hopefully I've shut that down....
Cable and DSL users....should consider some sort of firewall. and check
out a program called Process Viewer 2000, Jan Kohl of the uspits told me
about that one. It shows lots more programs running than what the
ctrl-alt-delete does.

Dave Henrie's PC hacked; firewall advice for online racers
Dave Henrie found that someone was using his cable connection to send pings, after installing ZoneAlarm. Others recommended ZoneAlarm, BlackICE and Tiny Personal Firewall, explained process viewers and DSL versus cable, and confirmed the firewalls work with GPL and N4 online. A side spat broke out over overquoting.

You might want to try Tiny Firewall, it's as easy to use as ZA but
allows for better configuration. I had not problems to run online
games trough it. http://www.tinysoftware.com/pwall.php

Useless fact: RJ45 plugs are built to be to guaranteed to work once.
Anyway, I always have stuff downloading or ICQ running when I'm not in. I
guess I've been lucky but I've had 2 static IP addresses for nearly 2 years

Its a coax A/B switch. I have my TV on A and my cable modem on B
switch to A = TV but no internet
switch to B = Internet, but no TV
My "always on" internet connection is "always on" for less that an hour each
day, and I switch it off after each use. This was done so I could watch
cable in the computer room, not for security. But when the switch is on A
its got better security than ANY firewall. hehehe!!

to email, remove the 'fat'
Dave, are you running cable or dsl? (I recently switched from cable to
DSL and got much better latency results for racing online in N4).
Cable is shared and bogs down more than DSL, which is dedicated
bandwidth.
I have a Linksys Cable/DSL router which allows you to setup a private
LAN behind an NAT (network address translation) firewall. About the
only thing you'd have to worry about would be trojans "phoning home"
but for the most part, it cuts out a bunch of trouble. it works great
for N4 online as well, but I haven't tried hosting any races or
anything. The router does support 1 PC in what they call the "DMZ"
but basically it's a 2nd internet ip address that is NOT behind the
NAT.
I've used black ice for a LONG time and while it's still installed on
my PC, it hasn't uttered a peep since the DSL arrangement was setup.
You don't really even need this stuff with NAT, but I'm paranoid :)
Email me if you have any technical questions and I'll help you out.
Zone Alarm is ok, but Black Ice has 4 settings - trusting, cautious,
nervous and paranoid - you don't concern yourself with ports and
stuff. It also shuts down trojans phoning home....

If you only knew! Most attacks on web servers come from exactly your
type of comprimised box!
I do not know about Black Ice but Zone Alarm will allow you in the
security settings to add "local computers" for online gaming, you
should be able to add any ip address of any other computer/computers
you are working with and they will bypass the firewall...
It is PURE sucide to leave ANY computer hooked to the net unprotected!
Even dialup accounts are hit constantly by people looking for
exploitable boxes. If you only knew how many programs are running
around on the net, automatically looking for boxes.. finding them and
then emailing their findings to the perp who sent them out in the
first place..
The net is VERY insecure and much of this is due to cable modems and
dsl connected boxes which sit there unprotected...
Get a firewall. use it like your life depended on it!
Your life may not.. but the health of the Internet does!!!!!

On or off, when you are on a DSL connection and not passing data, you
are not using any system resources. The connection to your provider is
live, whether or not your computer is on. IMHO, put a firewall, like
Zone Labs Zone Alarm on your system and leave the system running all
the time. There is a brief period on boot when you are unprotected by
your firewall.. better to reduce the exposure and boot as infrequently
as possible.. Leaving your DSL connection running is not a bad idea at
all and in fact, is probably a good idea.. PROVIDING you are protected
by a firewall... and everyone needs to be protected these days.
I know of some DSL providers who are going to insist their clients use
a firewall... and this almost should be mandated... or included in all
operating systems.
We all have enjoyed a very free envrionment on the net for years.. but
trust me, as an internet provider, I can tell you that hacks are
getting more and more frequent and are forcing some providers out of
business.. It's a constant battle and unprotected DSL "always on"
connections are a large part of the current wave of attacks against
web servers...

I may have a problem myself. Outlook Express has been very slow lately, it
runs fine one minute and the next it crawls. I was just exploring my C
drive, and found all the file.chk folders that I had not seen before. There
were like 19 of these things, each about 4kb in size. I started viewing them
with notepad, and they appear to be transcripts from newsgroups I have
visited in the past, very strange. Don't know if it's the trouble I am
having with OE that is generating these file.chk folders or what.
What do you guys recommend for a good firewall that doesn't cause too much
grief for online gaming, zone alarm?

Not quite true.. DSL is also shared.. You have only "so much"
bandwidth to work with and you will see slowdowns as more users are
online.. *where* the bottleneck will be will depend on your provider
but trust me, as a long time DSL user.. more users online and using
the system.. means more lag and less data flow..

After reading this thread I downloaded Tiny Personal Firewall last night.
It has been working well so far. I have raced online with GPL and N4 today

An interesting site to visit once you have installed your firewall is here:

Run Shields Up to see if you are vulnerable to hacking. Also the comments
on personal firewalls that Steve Gibson makes are very interesting. He
recommends using either Zone Alarm or Tiny Personal Firewall. I have tried
using Zone Alarm with GPL before but without success. As I said above, the
Tiny firewall works fine.

For running processes? No, not with System Information tool. Only NT has
this type of utility built into the O.S.

Yes, for running processes. Go to system tools/system information/
Now select software environment, select running tasks, 16bit modules
loaded and 32bit modules loaded. See?

Just because it gets "hits" doesn't exactly mean you're being
hacked... alot of times someone is just sniffing ports for a range of
IP numbers (or with Cable Modems, possibly ethernet packets)
Black Ice basically says "nobody's home" and the sniffer goes on it's
merry way, but let's you know someone came knocking... the key here
is they didn't find anything, didn't know anything was there, and
therefore never bothered to try to hack anything. hope that helps
somewhat...

it's a shared circuit versus a dedicated circuit. That doesn't mean
you'll get it all, all the time depending on the bottleneck from where
you're coming from, but it's alot more efficient. sorry, I'm trying
to be pretty basic as this is kinda OT... :)

The point is that with *a little* effort on your side you would make
it *a lot* easier for others to follow the discussion.
In case you really didn't get it: please quote only the part(s) of the

Thanks again, Jan
DSL is shared too, just at different points.
For many, DSL is the connection from hell. It's not perfect for everyone :)

Those are the .chk files. Most often occurs with database programs. OE
stores it's data just like a database program.
If you don't need the data in a .chk file, it can be deleted.

Thanks for you time, Jan
Well listen up then Mr Elites Jan. Your overly zealous condescending tone
speaks for istelf! If you think you have the arrogance to tell me what to do
or not to do, you can forget it! If you dont like my posts or reposts block
me or filter me out! {whatever the case may be}
I am too old for such juvenille attitudes as yours & you add nothing to my
life! I have seen/read your type for many'many years in the usenet groups.
So if you dont like it! Dont read it!! Do You Get It Now? Good!!

No reason to lose your temper. What's the problem in accepting
a little advice? If you don't want to follow it then that's your free
decision, but you don't have to get mad at me.
It's not as if I would keep bugging you over and over, as I could for
instance with that other issue I asked you about - your apparently
misconfigured news agent splitting up the threads as it just did with
this one. Oh sorry, now I did bug you again ...
Anyway, thanks again for your attention,
Jan
