Following the thread about the patch for F1RC I would like to point out the
following :
Just because Papyrus made GPL doesn't mean EVERY game they do is as good as
GPL
Just because UBI made F1RS or MGPR2 doesn't mean EVERY game they do is just
arcade.
In this direction I would like to point out that although F1RC has been
released MUCH later than NASCAR4 the patch for F1RC "SHOULD" be there soon,
for the moment we have no indication about the NASCAR4 patch, i think we can
agree that both NASCAR4 and F1RC need a patch for various reason (AI among
others) but for just this time you will have to admit that UBI soft has
reacted quickly, quicker than Hasbro for GP3 and the split axis patch,
quicker than Papyrus/Sierra for the NASCAR4 patch.
So give the guys a break and let's see what happens next, without being too
prejudiced by the games they released BEFORE.
Debate over Papyrus and Ubi Soft patch speed and reputations
A poster argued that neither Papyrus nor Ubi Soft should be judged purely on past titles, prompting debate about patch timing for NASCAR Racing 4 and F1 Racing Championship. Some speculated Papyrus was folding fixes into an expansion pack, which drew objections from players frustrated by N4's AI behaviour under cautions; others defended Papyrus for taking time to get it right. David G Fisher claimed F1 Racing Simulation was once hailed here as the most realistic sim, which others disputed.
Automated summary.
Basing a company on how quick a patch comes out is not correct either.
You have no idea what is going on behind the scenes.. you have no idea how
much time the company is spending trying to get the patch done.
A company can come out with a patch 2 months faster than another company,
but if the patch does not fix much or just plain sucks.. then what? NH is a
perfect example of this.. what really did the first patch fix??

Well of course you all know that the N4 patch is slow because Papy is
working hard completing their CART sim.

You know what's funny, F1RS was considered by the overwhelming majority of
sef-declared experts here at r.a.s. to be the greatest and most realistic
sim yet when it was released. Somehow, it then became an arcade game.

Based on past experience I'm sure you'll be pleased. We'll see a couple
more variations of N4 with add-ons...BGN... maybe the 2001 season tracks...
another anniversary edition or something... then N5. Really, isn't it about
time they put out something other than yet another Nascar title? I'm not
knocking N4 (got it, drive it, love it) but I'd really like to see something
else from them next.

It is my pure speculation, but I would say it's obvious that the patch took
some different shapes. They were probably working on preparing the patch
before even the release of N4. After the unsuspected high sales and top of
the chart list, they probably morphed the patch with the expansion pack. I
doubt there won't be one.
Let's remember that for N2 the Expansion pack iirc brought new fixes to the
game, more then the original patch.

I don't have any. That's what I remember. I'm not doing a search of posts
from three years ago to back this up. No time for that type of project. I do
remember quite clearly that this newsgroup was dominated by F1RS, and people
like Alison Hine had written (on her web site) that it was fantastic and the
best yet.
David G Fisher
BTW, I wasn't a big fan of F1RS when it was released. I was slow and
reluctant to come around to it.

Like I said, there was an initial shock. All there was back then was arcade
F1 titles on the Playstation and of course GP2. F1RS was a visual shock.
But soon after the release of the demo, it got canned by a good majority.
That didn't stop after the final release. It was the best yet, but when the
dust came down everybody realised the major flaws in F1RS.

You seem to be saying that to get a proper patch to fix the issues with N4
we will have to buy an expansion pack? Does anyone else have a problem with
that besides me? I love N4 for its physics and driving model, but the AI is
seriously hosed and needs to be fixed(ya I know that's no news flash or
anything). To quote the back of the box: "Unparalleled AI: Smart Opponents
for Fierce Competition" - inside the front cover "True-to-life AI, The
competition is tough when you are up agains NASCAR pros....." I am totally
understanding that this title was rushed to market and I am sure that Papy
is working on a patch, but if I have to pay another $30.00 to get what was
advertised on the box I for one will be really pissed off.
What Papyrus has been doing lately is using the patch process to get the
next title
up to snuff. IF there are profound problems with N4 that Papyrus is
addressing, then it is clearly in their best interest patch the current
title and therefore save the programming
effort for whatever is coming next.

Well, to be honest I doubt it also but it seemed to be what ymenard was
implying. I guess I am a bit frustrated with N4 right now since it is so
close to being the best race-sim ever(IMHO) yet just about every race I run

If you're talking about F1RC then you should start purchasing your

What would happen is even if the patch came out in a expansion pack (which I
doubt), they would still allow you to download the patch part of it for

Nice, which road tracks are they using?

The CTS trucks ran at Portland (the same one as in CART) and the Glen in
2000, but this year there is no more road courses in the series. I would
speculate that an expansion pack from Papyrus would be of last year's
schedule. Last year's schedule is so much better then the bland schedule of
2001 (they eliminated all the fun short tracks). It's a trend that will
kill NASCAR on the long run.

Not as long as there are dodos who believe whizzing round in dizzying
circles is a real sport

Okay... enough of trollish attitude. I see that you are new here, but you
need to learn a couple of things.

See his (Aviator) comments on F1RC in a thread above to confirm that!

to how badly the code was screwed up in the first place. Or perhaps they are
taking their time simply because they hold their customer base in such
contempt. Sierra's treatment of Europeans who preordered N4 is ample
evidence of this contempt. More evidence still is to be found in the fact
that there has been nothing from Sierra/Papy to indicate they are working on
any patch at all. I have not seen so much as a list of "Known Issues". If
they have even answered any email from anyone I have not heard of it.
Everyone just assumes the patch is coming and that the troubles that are
most mentioned in the message bases are the ones they are working on. I have
even seen some who claim that the very silence from Sierra/Papy is proof
they are working on a patch and that the absence of a patch over these
months is evidence of the number of issues they are addressing and features
they are adding. Under this logic the less Papy says and the longer Papy
takes the happier these people will be.
