Poor frame rates with full fields in NASCAR Racing 4

James Wohlever complained that his P3 650 with a TNT2 Ultra could not run a full field in NASCAR Racing 4 despite meeting the box's preferred specs. Others recommended lowering detail sliders and draw settings or upgrading the video card, while some argued Papyrus should make the game run on recommended hardware. Tim Elhajj eventually traced his own stuttering to a faulty sound card.

Ok, I have played the papy Nascar series since the Indycar 1 and NASCAR 1 days, and I was always able to run a full field with most graphics on. Now, I can't It doesn't matter if I have only 640x480x16 colors. \I can not run a full field of cars without massive frame rate drop. THis is unacceptable. I have a P3 650 Mhz machine with 196 Megs of SDRAM. I should be able to run a full field with l;owered graphics. Is there something I am missing to make this game run fluid. I would hate to put this sim on the shelve and go back with Nascar 3, or NASCAR heat. But if I can not race this game the way I want to, then what alternative do I have? Frustrated.
drop the detail sliders. The AI cars do require a fair amount of grunt and your CPU is lower end these days. You dont mention what video card you have. You would want at least a geforce DDR. Shane James Wohlever <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Im running it on a 533eb, 256ram,and a V770Ultra. I had to turn the world detail to medium and keep the mirror running just the traffic, and depending on the track, kill some or all trackside objects. At 1024x768x16 and 30 cars, my framerates are quite acceptable. Seeing how the latest processors are running away from my setup(almost 1gig faster :( ), an upgrade is in my very near future. Dicker with the graphics options, you'll be surprised at what a couple of tweaks can do for framerate. If my old 533 can run this thing fairly well, you should have no probs. P.S. you failed to mention the card yer using currently.

Things I've found that really help framerate: -reduce # of cars drawn -turn off lightmaps and reflections -Set World Detail and Draw Ahead really really low If nothing else, Upgrade your PC, race with fewer cars, or just lower your expectations. :) I run 20 or 26 AI cars at 25fps on most tracks. ----------------------------------------- Dan Belcher Team Racing Unlimited http://simcrash.00game.com

What card? V3? With a nice GFII GTS you should be able to run N4 quite well.. Andre

You know what? Its that kind of thinking that allows game companies to continue to program to the least common denominator. The preferred recommendations on the Nascar 4 box read, "Pentium 3 600, 128mb Ram, 32mb Direct 3d compatible video card". We do not know James video card is, but it sounds like his system should meet the preferred recommendations everywhere else. However, I can tell you from experience this is not the case. One of my machines is a PIII 600, 128mb ram, with Geforce 2 MX and I have to turn down the details to less than Nascar 3 quality to run the game at a decent frame rate with a normal number of cars. With Nascar Heat on the same machine I run 40-50fps with very good detail. Less than a year ago, I purchased the fastest Intel PC available(PIII 933), and the fastest video card available (32mb Geforce 2 GTS - the 64mb was not out yet). I purchased this setup in the hopes of running Grand Prix 3, Nascar 4, Nascar Heat, and WSC at the best levels possible. Keep in mind, this was when Nascar 4 was still scheduled for release in the early fall. Obviously the hardware life cycle has just been getting shorter and shorter every year, but should we be expected to update our computers every 4-6 months with the highest speed processors and graphics cards just to continue to keep up with the games? Again, I know its always been this way, but its never been this bad. Graphics accelerators were supposed to help increase the life cycles of our PC's yet this is the furthest thing from the truth. In 4 years, I have upgraded my video card 6 times, and my processor 6 times. This is just to keep close to running these games at a decent level. Now you are telling me that I need to ditch my 9 month old video card for another one just to play Nascar 4 effectively? Even though the preferred settings make no mention of this? Damn! I am sure that as soon as I get a Geforce 2 Ultra, the Geforce 3 will be released. Sorry I could not be much help James, but I guess the Nascar 4 box should have really had a price tag of $500 and come with a 64mb Geforce Ultra packed inside. :) Don Chapman [email hidden]

Yup, the physics of N4 are not surprisingly a little bit more demanding than those of N3. I agree with you on Heat, it's physics don't seem to differ much from N4, while it runs much better. Andre
James, I know what you mean! I just upgraded from a p3 550 and with that old machine I was only able to test tracks. The framerate hit was just too severe otherwise. Even with my new box--1.2 ghz AMD and Voodoo5--I'm still running at 640x480 to keep the framerate up. I've got most of the options at high or midrange, full 42 AI cars, and it never drops below 20 (and 20 is only during the smoke intensive pile-ups). This one just loves processor power. I'm curious if the Nvidia cards would help me much, but no way am I going to buy the GF3 at $500, nor do I want one of the older Nvidia cards with the new one out. When they drop in price, I'll get one but even then I don't think I'll get more than a bump in resolution. "James Wohlever" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Yes and No. I have a P3-850 with 256meg of ram and a 32 meg GeForce2 GTS... Fairly well ABOVE the preferred system that N4 lists. I have had such wild fluctuations in frame rate it is almost comical. In test mode using OpenGL, I can attain 140 FPS with everything on! In race mode, I can go anywhere from 25 to 40 FPS in OpenGL (usually the lower) with HALF of everything turned on. The second a wreck occurs or I touch a wall, the FPS will drop to SINGLE digits and damn near freeze. This seems to make me think the problem isn't in the hardware but the physics of the game and calculations going on to create the results. In D3D, forget it, the game is pure junk for my set up (D3D is junk anyway but that's another argument). Funny though, 99.9 of anything else I play is fine in D3D and the framerates are in the 60's/70's (and up!) for games like Need For Speed 3/4/PU, Quake 2 & 3, Flight Sim 2000, etc. Something is SERIOUSLY wrong in N4's logic. I'd at least go to 8x6 I think you won't see much drop off. I have an AMD 1.1 and run with 2xfsaa. And generally my V5 puts up a higher average than what you quote. If your running a 1.2 ghz cpu and having to run at 640x480 to keep the framerates up, you got a system problem somewhere. Heck, I get better framerates than that on my Celeron 566 running at 850 on a BH6 mb and GeForce2 MX card, at 1024x768. -- Don Burnette D Burnette in N4 Some people do nothing wrong. I gave 8x6 a try just a few minutes ago. It's not that bad, actually. I did occasionally see it go into the teens during pile ups, but for the most part I was seeing mid 20's or so in the straights, 40's in the turns at Daytona... Now, this was with *all* the options checked or to the right, full field, d3d. Speaking of D3D, I take it that the Voodoo cards don't like OpenGL like the GeForce cards do? Open GL is slow as cold honey on my machine. I have no idea how you can get those framerates and use 2x FSAA. Do you have *all* the options checked and to the right? Okay, Dan. You're telling me you can do BETTER than a frame rate that NEVER drops below 20, and you have a full 42 AI cars? And this is running a C566 @ 850 in 1024x768? LOL! Ok, I'll bite. How much faster than 20 frames per second at all times do you get? Are you getting 25 Frames per second? Maybe you're getting 30 frames per second? Either that or you really know how to optimize for speed. ;) "Don Burnette" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:ZqUr6.5043$[email hidden]... > If your running a 1.2 ghz cpu and having to run at 640x480 to keep the > framerates up, you got a system problem somewhere. > Heck, I get better framerates than that on my Celeron 566 running at 850on

Ok, spent some more time racing tonight and I don't think frame rate is the problem anymore. What I'm seeing is stuttering, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with frame rate. Tonight I was at a different track, Atlanta, with a full field, 8x6, all options, and it was between 20-50. Not so sure about the high end because I wasn't paying attention to those numbers. Anyhow--during the start there was a drop to the teens for a few seconds, and it happened again a little ways into the first lap, but other than that, it never went far below 20. It still kills me how many folks insist they never see framerates drop below 20. Someone emailed me today to say his AMD K6 400 was pulling down a constant 30 fps, full field, GF, all options maxed, insane resolution. All I got to say is, No way. It drops, you're just not being discriminating enough about frame rate. Have to get rrevved or Jagg to chip in here, frame rate queens that they are. ;) But I digress. ;) Here's the strange part. I crashed about 7 laps into a quick 30 lap race, but instead of starting over, I watched the rest of the race and noticed that even when the framerate was registering in the mid to high 30's, I was seeing pauses and jerky movement. It doesn't happen all the time, and I wasn't really seeing a pattern either. FWIW, I think it's more noticeable from the outside views. Anyone else see anything like this? I have the Voodoo5 and 1.2g Athlon combo. Voodoo5 overclocked to 175mhz. At 800x600, 2x anti-aliasing, world detail 50%, draw ahead 95%, draw behind 25%, some detail in mirror, some track objects, high detail cars, 8 sounds, Ad3 (Mx300), force feedback, all lighting, smoke, ect., full field, 21 drawn ahead, 3 behind, I get a solid 37 fps (V-sync enabled) at the start at all tracks, but it can drop to 29 fps, say, at Daytona on the front straight with pitting cars. Accidents can drag it down to lower 20's. Steve K. Guys, thanks to everyone who responded about their frame rates in N4. At first I thought you guys were just having fun with me, but as it turns out there was a problem with my box. If you hadn't clued me in, I might have taken me a lot longer to sort it out. Turns out the sound card was either bad or had a faulty driver install. I kept getting framerate results that fluctuated wildly from night to night and sound always seemed to be an issue, so I turned sounds off and man did it turn into a smooth game. I swapped out the sblive for a different sblive card and it was a dramatic improvement. I just returned the card, and I'm very grateful to everyone who responded! who >responded! Speaking of... I ran a Diamond Stealth 3d card in my P150 when I first got GPL in 98. I shortly there after grabbed a V2 and that alone gave me a whole lot more for NASCAR2 and GPL. Then after a system upgrade (MB and CPU) again I grabbed a big improvement. Next was the sound card. I had a AWE SB something or other (The biggest AWE there is). I heard about switching to the SB live so I went ahead and did so. WOW, that gave me the biggest improvement of all (excuding the system upgrade). My question now is... Is there an even better sound card out there then the SB Live for Sim Racing? I'm sure there is but here on RAS I haven't heard, so far, anyone mention a better card. It's been I think two years since I purchased this and in two years time there has to be a better card on the market. I've since upgraded to a ASUS A&V, KT133, 1.0G T-bird, V5, et. et. But I'm still using that SB Live card. Obviously I don't have any real problems with it and I'm sure it'll be a good card for a couple more years for me. However, This is the oldest component in my system.

This was very good for performance and a big step for sound cards. However, there's nothing like this change that has happened or is going to happen in the near future.
So what you are trying to say is that the SB Live is the best and nothing will beat it any time soon for PC racing? I knew it was because of the ISA to PCI that gave me the boost, but I was hoping for suggestions on better sound cars out side of that fact. Tim Elhajj wrote in message <3ab5046b$[email hidden]>...

I am saying you may find another sound card that suits you better, but you are not going to see the performance jump you saw previously when you went from ISA to PCI. I got the same problem, i can do a test session and with vsync on i get 100fps (monitor refresh rate is at 100) but as soon as i go into a race mode, even if its just against 2-3 cars my fps gets cut to 50 "Marc Collins" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:vXWs6.408851$[email hidden]...

Personally, I've found the Hercules Game Theater XP to be just as good, if not better, than the SBLive. -Larry "Michael Barlow" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:fA7t6.246563$[email hidden]... > So what you are trying to say is that the SB Live is the best and > nothing will beat it any time soon for PC racing? Yeah, same here. I feel like it mostly has to do with what's going on in the race. If I run with a 43 car field at Talladega, it usually runs anywhere from 25-40 FPS in OpenGL with everything on (P3-800, GF2MX), and turning the settings down really doesnt improve things much (dropping them to 1/2 doesn't give more than a 10-15% improvement). In the middle of a big pile-up, my FPS drops into the single digits. Makes it really hard to drive through without getting "collected"... BTW, I haven't seen the huge FPS you get in testing... your card is a bit peppier than mine, though. Maybe it will work better as we get more green flag laps in....
