I am able to qualify and compete quite nicely with the AI in GPL when they are set at 100%. I was able to beat the AI in N3 at 100% at most tracks fairly easily. So far, and I haven't tested all the tracks by any means, I am 43 of 43 consistently--and sometimes by a decent margin. I am using the fast setups...which don't seem very fast to me. Started playing with the intermediate set-ups and they are no faster, generally. I regularly pass AI cars during practise rounds, but my speeds are always the lowest. Someone please post (or point to) a set-up for any non-plate track that allows them to beat the AI at 100% (replay would be nice, too). I will then publicly display whether I am a lousy driver or the provided set-ups suck big time. While beating 100% is a worthy goal, I think we must remember, it is an arbitrary one. I would hope that Papyrus tried their best to get 100% times to equal the Winston Cup efforts, but that is the only reason to be dismayed that you are not worthy. Find a # you CAN race at...N4 is NOT N3. Most of the past Papyrus percentages have been wildly erratic. At some tracks most players could smoke 100%, while at other tracks the same players got eaten alive by the 100% AI. I haven't messed with N4 enough yet to know if GPL's Global Hype system was also brought forward...(but I haven't heard anyone comment on this so I'll 'guess' it wasn't) So yeah...you MAY suck as a driver...SO WHAT? find a percentage you can live with...don't beat yourself up trying to reach 100%, especially when we aren't even sure what it truly represents. dave henrie "Marc Collins" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:98rp6.327543$[email hidden]... > I am able to qualify and compete quite nicely with the AI in GPL when they > are set at 100%. It took a little homework, but I've found some standard adjustments that I can make to the default "fast" and "qualify" setups to be competitive with the AI at 100%. Just last night I was amazed at how fast the AI was qualifying at Atlanta. :28.9's would show up at the top, and my :29.3's would put me about 35th (70 degrees). The first thing I did was start a race, bail out and hop into one of the AI cars to see how they were accelerating and braking (or decelerating). Just doing that was a major breakthrough. Once I saw how I needed to run I sort of knew how I wanted my car to behave. Adjustments to the basics such as spoiler, and tape were first, then I made some changes to gear, wedge, track bar, caster, tire pressure and I think rear sway bar all with the goal of going fast and loose (but not too loose) in the turns while at the same time sticking the front end of the car down. I'm new at setups and probably go about it the wrong way, but I did manage to run a :28.959 after my adjustments - good enough for the pole with the AI at 100%. Starting at the front obviously makes it easier to stay up there during a race, but you can't just adjust tape and gear (as well as engine type) on a qual setup to make it work for a race. It's necessary to run at least 40 laps IMO to see how the tires hold up. Even if the middle temps look good on short runs I've been surprised to see how much the temps build up over the course of a longer run. Gearing is also something to watch for a race setup. Just my rookie thoughts... --David Cook "Bill Cranston" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Marc.... I wonder if it is required of Papyrus to provide "house" setups that are as fast as the real-world Winston Cup drivers? Would that even be in their best interest.....even if they had the time to do that......at 20 individual race tracks? Or, even if those were provided....would anyone be able to drive them at the real-world Cup car speeds......how would those "skills" be attained? If N4 is to be as close to a real-world Winston Cup racing simulation as possible......how could "amatures"....never having set foot in a race car, be capable of driving skills......equivalent to some of the best stock car drivers in the world.....in a matter of a few hours practice? A few months practice? These guys have been driving race cars for a living..........for years. So maybe, "a few years practice" would be correct for us? I wouldn't have much interest in N4......if I could get up to Winston Cup speed....simply by loading up a setup provided by Papyrus.....and practicing a few hours on it at a given track. I'd say.........this was pretty much an Arcade game......if I could do that. And, I'd hate it....put it on the shelf, and wait patiently for WSC. What I would like to see.....is in about a year, there be around a 100 or so online N4 drivers.....capable of qualifying and racing at real-world Cup speeds....in online races. I'd say those guys......were Winston Cup level drivers. The rest of us, we'd be amatures as we should be. Does this mean they'd be "better" drivers. No, it does not. It says, they've had the time to practice and work on their setups, so they were "equivalent" to Winston Cup drivers. The rest of us haven't been able to put in that kind of time (I figure it would take a minimum of 40 hours per week......serious practice.....not including any race seat time). Regarding "setups".......I always laugh when I see guys in the Sierra.com chat room ask, "Anybody want to share some fast setups.....these [provided] setups suck!" Now, I don't spend a lot of time in the Sierra.com chat room.....I usually go there to race....not to chat. So far, I think I've seen that question virtually everytime I've been in there.....even for just a few minutes. I always try to fullfill their desires......when I have the time. I say, "Give me your email address, I'll send you my setup for Sears Point. Its the only one I've had time to really work on much. I can turn low 94's (about 1:15's) in it." The answer is usually something like, "Cool.....here's my email address." Then I tell them......"Or, you can just use the <intermediate> setup that comes with N4.......that's what I use, but I had to rename it so I could change the wheel lock to what works best on my controller." This statement is usually followed by one of two things, either it is "silence"....or its something not printable here.....about my ancestory and my being a smart ass of some sort." ......lol..... Then.....I always respond with the same thing....I have a "chat macro" for this....so its easy to post...then go race: "There are no *fast* setups, they don't exist! There are, however, a few *fast* drivers.....you might consider trying to become one?" Marc, I've been trying to become a fast drive for years. Man....its really hard! That's what I love about racing. Regards, Tom Pabst PS: The AI cars don't have to contend with under-spec'd computers, crappy race controllers (or the God-forbid, keyboard), lousy frame rates and so forth. We do, however. All of those will make you "slow"....no matter what setup you use. That's just a fact of life......sim life that is. PSS: I think it would be great, if one of the major N4 race teams (website) would take the time to find out what AI "strength setting" (slider setting) is necessary....at each individual track.....to have the AI cars perform at Winston Cup speeds for that track. Maybe even do it for last year's Cup performance....then give us un updated "slider setting"....as each real-world Cup race is run this year? So far...that's been faster (I think). I don't thinks its reasonable to think Papyrus could write game code.....so that when the AI slider is set at 100%.....that is the equivalent of last year's Cup speeds....at every track. Man, that seems like a monumental coding task.....probably be another 10 years before we would have gotten N4.......I wouldn't have wanted to wait that long.....anybody else? Oh, it just occurred to me......that's probably why Papyrus made the AI slider....so we could adjust the AI cars to Cup speeds.....guess that's why you can set it below, at, or above......100%! Smart thinking Papyrus! To get somebody started.......here's the AI slider setting for Sears Point......so the AI cars run at Cup speeds (last year's Sears qualifying and race speeds).....its about 107%....give or take a few tenths. So far, I have the AI slider set at 95% for Sears....and I'm pretty much still getting "pounded" by those guys! I got a lot of work to do.......! By the way, Sears Point is my "home" race track. I have a few hundred hours.....probably closer to a 1,000 hours on this track...in various types of race cars. So far....in N4, my PB at Sears is a 95.2 mph. I did that only once....so its irrelevant...probably a fluke lap. I can run consistent laps at 92's mph......for about 5 laps, then it starts trailing off with my tire wear. Funny....how tires do that. I use the <intermediate> setup.....wheel lock at 12:1. When racing online.....the same setup produces race laps....at best....of 91 mph.....usually I'm happy with averaging 90 mph. I guess I'm a little too "jumpy" on the throttle....trying to beat my friends. I've got to learn to control that adrenaline a little more. PSSS: I've run "race laps" at Sears Point with several Winston Cup drivers using N3.......but it was only a few laps here and there...and none of us were being serious.....they were all fairly slow (except for Dale, Jr.). They are: Bobby Labonte, Jeff Gordon, Dale, Jr. (just a few laps), Steve Park, Ward Burton....and a few others. This was "in person" by the way, not online. I'd loved to have done that in N4. If Dale, Jr....happens to find some time to "post" in RAS (or maybe one of his BHM teamates could pass this message along)....I'd love to have him share with us what lap times he's running in N4, at Sears....when he gets around to practicing for this year's Sears Cup race there. I know he will do that.....there's not even a remote doubt in my mind.....since that track gave him some "fits" last year. And, Dale....."Thanks for the input you gave us this past summer regarding the WC Chute. I've never had a chance to personally thank you.....hopefully this message could get relayed to you? Did you see......the track is actually building the version of the Chute that you liked best? There's no more "sweeper" coming out of T-4.....it goes straight down hill....turns 90 degrees right....then straight (over the bridge)......and 90 degrees right again (at the original T-7). I've been trying to get Papyrus to let me help them make that change to the N4 track....so far...no dice, though. I'll send you the N3 version of it....if you think it would help? By the way, there's a way to make a competitive pass in this new section.....works every time.....and you can make it *stick* every time. But, its not the obvious *traditional* move that it seems like it should be. I have about 10 hours of seat time....on this section.....and this *pass-technique* is full-proof." And, Steve......man....you gotta stick to racing real race cars, dude! Or, go get some sim racing lessons from your buddy, Dale. And.....the next time I crawl into the footwell of a simulator to adjust the peddles for you....you better be wearing clean socks.... 'cause...I'm not doing that again if you aren't. ....lol.... Just bustin' your chops a little....lol....
And, very good "thoughts" they were, David. You are going to be one of the "fast guys".....I can tell. I'm going to remember your name when I see it on a "race list" .......that I'm racing in. I wonder though, how much your lap time at Atlanta improved....just because of the serious laps of practice you put in......working that set up? That has to have been a factor.....but how much of a factor would be difficult to ascertain. Thanks for the info. Tom Pabst
Before I made a change to the setup - just by adjusting my line - my times dropped by about 2/10ths with the "fast" race setup. After running about 50 laps while working on the setup I got it down about another 3/10ths. I was running :29.9's and can now run :29.4's in a race. Still need to work on that. I think I can get it down to 2's or 1's. Practice is definitely a major factor. But the car definitely makes it easier to go faster if it's "hooked up". I have to agree with your previous post, in that if N4 came bundled with "perfect" setups I would not be having so much fun with it. Before N4 I didn't know a thing about setting up a car. I even bought Greger Huttu a copy of Nascar Heat and he shared a lot of knowledge with me during those days before N4. Are you reading Greger? Thanks! --David Cook "Tom Pabst" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:YCtp6.5777$[email hidden]... > And, very good "thoughts" they were, David. "Tom Pabst" <[email hidden]> wrote: > I wonder if it is required of Papyrus to provide "house" setups > that are as fast as the real-world Winston Cup drivers? No, not really, but at some point one must verify that the simulation is accurate by comparing what one can do in it versus what is done in real life. This would seem to require both a 'fast' setup and a fast driver, so why not share the former with one's customers? I'm more concerned with the lack of replays shipping with N4 of humans running times that comapre favorably with the actual times run in NASCAR. As for a lack of experience, I've been running GPL for 2+ years, what else do I need? ;-) - George
the setups arent that great! You should be able to run with the AI and beat em though at 100%. Why not develop your own? I am sure a lot of folks are hard at work trying to accomplish the same, and rest assured it can be accomplished. Understand though, a lot of it will have to do with driving style and strategy as well. If you don't have time or simply won't work on getting faster, I'm sure faster setups will continue to pop up. Again though, what may be great for one may be a dog for another. In N4, it is even more important to develop a setup to suit " your" driving style. Fwiw, I start with the fast setup, loosen it up slightly, work on the camber, and start watching tire temps and going from there. -- Don Burnette D Burnette in N4 Some people do nothing wrong. The problem is, they do nothing. And THAT is wrong. Tom, I have been racing Papy sims for years and believe me I have earned my way to competitive times at every GPL track (except the Ring) the hard way--with hours and hours of practise. I agree with your sentiments. But if Papy only provides one global AI % slider, then they need to ensure that the grip/speeds/whatever of the AI are accurate--or force them to use the same physics we have to (which is impossible on our home PC's). There was a third party utility for N3 that altered the AI at each track individually. That's fine--GPL has one too and it works very well when you are learning. But if I can qualify in the top 3 in a non Lotus regularly at Mosport or Monza or Kyalami at 100% and I can drive N3 at 100% and be in the top 5 or 10 at every track, I should be able to do better than 43 of 43 at every track in N4. I am not claiming to be the world's best racer, but I am better than most and vastly more experienced than 99% of people who will buy N4. I am happy to spend years if necessary getting competitive with N4...I just want to make sure it's not a GPL-like timing bug or wonky grip or AI settings that are causing this situation. Only the rest of you people can tell me that. If there are few who can do a bit of tweaking and beat them, then I am happy to do the same. If the odds are unfairly stacked, then, sorry, I am not going to do it. Marc. Marc, Be sure to right click on all the setup options in the garage. Papy has done an excellent job with the pop-up help. Also check out http://members.nbci.com/_XMCM/racinrod/N4%20chassis%20setup%20guide.htm for a great setup guide for N4 by Rodney Arndt. It is not all you. The settings are not too accurate in the track.ini files. They dust me at Martinsville and I lap em all at Dover, for example. The good news is they can easily be edited in the track.ini files to get a more realistic consistency between tracks. Try getting some race lap speeds from some good sim racers and set the AI to run similar times. /TomH

Wouldn't it be nice if while in Victory Lane after listing all the 300 sponsors who helped make this one victory possible, the winner would give out the set-up that helped him win? I usually stop giving the race all my attention if my driver wrecks or is having a bad day, but I'd be there at the end to get the set-up. During the race at the Rock, DW mentioned they were using a 450 Right Rear Spring to get through the corners better. Those on bhmotorsports newserver tried it and learned they too could get around faster.

Well then you must have practiced. I remember quite clearly r.a.s. when GPL came out. The amount of bitching that nobody could stay without editing the driver files was deafening.
