Wishlist of features for a NASCAR 4 patch
A poster listed desired NASCAR Racing 4 patch features including a save race option and a Shift-R instant restart. Debate followed over whether instant restarts discourage learning careful starts, with others saying practice in testing mode makes it valuable, and complaints that the AI ignores the player.

There is already the F2/space... ??

Press the spacebar for instant interval
I've been doing some testing at Daytona with setups. it might be my
imagination but with the default setups I get a constant scraping noise all
the way around the track. It's very very faint but it's there. Again, It
might be my imagination or it might even be a noise that sounds similar. Any
case, after adjusting the ride hights and sesspention, I got rid of that
noise and so far with about 20+ laps I've only bottomed out when I brushed
the apron and only for that moment. where as before I would bottom out
while I was close to the apron and stay stuck to the track no matter where I
went on the track from that point on. 20+ laps isn't enough to say I solved
the situation but.... we'll see.
btw: I like the save race idea for red flagged league events :-)
>3) Ability to disable cockpit bobbing movement
JMHO,
I could do without the shift-R. Biggest contributor to people not learning how
to drive on the start.
Mike :)
Mike, I think it has it's good points. Remember we have many just learning
"how to" race sims and this would help them "re-start" without the in-out &
back in again just to start again. Hell I start without Qual-ing at all in
all my
offline races so I never use Shift-R...lol But thats just wacky me!! <G>
I just love dice'ing thru 20-30cars to hopefully get to 1st, 2nd or 3rd
spot!
Hey I am from the East and have spent many hours driving in NYC so it's
nothing for me to drive in N4 AI traffic.. <vbg>

I am interested in how your logic works (or doesn't as the case may be).
How does forcing one to reload the track rather than just hitting a restart
button help them learn how to drive on the start when either way you still
end up at exactly the same place, it's just that one method is
instantaneous and the other, the one you advocate, requires 7 or 8 mouse
clicks and 20-30 seconds to reload the track? Is that your slant? You
think the gamer should be punished for screwing up, in the form of using up
his gaming time with "loading" screens, instead of letting him just press
Shift-R and get an instant restart? The reality is with Shift-R someone
can wreck and restart four or five races in the same amount of time it
currently takes to screw up, exit and reload ONE. Do you really believe
punishing them with a reload screen is a more effective learning tool than
the one that offers five times as much sheer practice? Would anyone really
admit to such idiotic thinking?
All that really happens is people get tired of waiting for the non-sensical
track reloads and they solve their problem by exiting the frustrating game
altogether rather than give it another wasted minute of their time. In the
long run that hurts YOU, the true N4 aficionado, more than it hurts them.
And you're applauding this functionality? Bizarre, indeed.
So, tell me. How is "start, crash, exit, reload, wait, wait, wait,
restart, crash, reload, wait, wait, wait, etc." a better tool for learning
how to start a race than "start, crash, restart, crash, restart, etc."?

Hey Rick! I just read your other post, nearly wore me out! My point about
shift-R is that if you don't want to go through all the garbage that you just
stated, then BE CAREFUL on the starts.
By using shift-r you can just make a headlong rush to the first turn at
watkins glen, crash out the field, shift-R and do it again. After a few times
of that, gee, it seems as though your ready for online racing! Yahoo! (Watch
out so you don't get sprayed with the dripping sarcasm there! :)) JMHO

You do know that the only way to get better is to practice, right? Not
just to be more careful, but to practice so you can come to learn how
careful is careful enough. You don't get that from being
intentionally careful, you get that from *practicing*. And in N4,
practicing is frankly a pain in the butt because you can only race until
the first mistake, then you have to start ALL THE WAY OVER again, including
reloading the track and all that garbage. :-)

I think you're 180 degrees wrong here. If people could set up and easily
access an offline game of their choice, and could restart it easily and
save it when they're doing good, they'd probably be much LESS likely to get
online until they've had some fun races offline, thereby gaining
experience whether they meant to or not. Since you can't do anything
offline except start a race and run until you crash, be at on the first lap
or the last, I think people are much more likely to say, "screw this, let
me see if I can find a good game online."
Hope you have your sarcasm cup ready to catch all those drops. :)
All the best,
Rick
Fwiw,
I do all my track "learning" in testing mode, with damage off, and shift-r
works very well there. I practice many many laps like this, until I feel I
am very consistant and know how far I can push the car.

Good advice, thanks. I'm currently running medium length races with no
damage (sigh) so when I wreck (or get wrecked as is often the case) I just
wait for the lead cars to come around again and rejoin them. From a dead
standstill you can parallel them if you get on it when they're about
six seconds behind you, give or take a second depending on their speed.
Use F2 and <SPACE> to see spacing.
I save after a good qualifying round and before the warmup session
(quickrace off) so I can use the warmup session when reloading to
familiarize myself with the track before racing. After saving it the first
time, be sure to answer No on exiting the track in subsequent runnings or
else you'll lose the warmup period (it being the new last completed
session).
I haven't driven to the end of a race but if it's like GPL (and if my
memory is correct), saved games are deleted once you finish the race. If
you don't want to have to re-qualify, don't finish a race. Or, make a copy
of the saved game(s) (*.svg) in \nascar4\players\[yourname]\savegame.
As you can see, I'm doing everything I can to keep from sitting through
that dang reload screen any more than necessary -- lol.
Thanks,
Rick

All the practice in the world is not going to help us avoid the AI drivers
who often appear oblivious to our existence. When that happens, I sure
wish you could just restart (or better, load from a midrace saved game)
instead of having to exit the track, wait for it to reload, and start all
over from scratch.
Was that point really lost on you?
Best regards,

keep redundantly re-starting. N4 is a race sim/game not Real-Life Nascar.

Practice, practice, practice. Then practice some more. Learn the tracks.
Learn how far you can get away with your braking. Tweak your brake bias and
