I only have a PII400 with a 3dfx banshee video card right now and can't
decide if I should bother with N4 yet. Has anyone else tried N4 with a
similar machine, or know what kind of performance I can expect?
Any info would be much appreciated,
Leo
i just deleted it from a very similar system with a v3 2000.

On my PIIII500 V3 it was hardly playable, even with most details off
in 640x480 resolution. A GFII card helped me a lot, with 22 AI cars on
the road it's very good playable with a fps varying from 25-45, but I
faster processor is very much recommended.

i jumped into training (no ai) in 800x600x16 and got a choppy 18-35 fps.
the graphics looked awful and all the settings were at the 50% default, so i
dumped it and put it back in the box. it'll be safe there until i can
upgrade.

I guess I won't be bothering with N4 after all. Looks like Papy has forced
me to buy a better computer ... yet again! :-)

That really sucks, i am sick to death of upgrading just cause a sim comes
out, ithink 400 mhz is about average these days and Sierra just suck doing
this, i got a p3 700 and prob i can run it, but it doesnt change the fact
that Sierra should think for the masses and not the million dollar systems
that they probably have. Its GPL all over agian, youde think they would
learn ??

Granted they
set the bar WAY higher than most, but at the same time their products are often
WAY better than most too. I think the nature of the games justifies the
investment needed. For example, GPL forced me to upgrade last time, but I love
and play that game to this day, and it can still hold it's own against more
modern games in almost all respects!
I can only hope N4 will be the same : )

Ditto Leo and just think if we get all the addons, fixes, and many other
great things that many here did to make GPL even better {thanx guyz
btw!} I like N4 now and I think many of the creative programers will
make it better!! Cheers Thom_j.
P.S. I've upgraded my puter 7 times since GPL first came out..<g>

Those 3rd party add-ons have done wonders to extend the lives of papy products.
I wonder if the good folks at The Pits are planning a touring car patch for N4?
Can you imagine papy's great physics engine + the gpl tracks + tin tops? That
would be so awesome!!! : )

If I may be so bold...
We were warned about this, clearly, over a year ago. Papyrus, at one time,
_suspended_ this product because they didn't feel the computers of the
current era (which were indeed around 400-450Mhz, I still have the one I had
then and it's my server now) and they made it clear as to why. That is why
we saw Nascar Racing 99 (could have done without that one) and Nascar Racing
3.
There were no secrets that the GPL engine, driving a Nascar Sim, would have
serious system requirements.

True, but I hate those 'minium: PII266mhz' messages on the box.
A PIII500 is about the minimum. With a very fast gfx card.
You -need- a decent fps in a racing game like this.

The "Minimum Requirements" game is one we all know too well. It's one of
those numbers you typically double in real life to come up with something
accurate.
Ever tried to run Windows 2000 on a P166?
Apparantly, Microsoft has one damned-powerful P166 lying around somewhere :)

So you'd rather people write software dumbed down for the people who have 2-3
year old systems? If everyone created for the MAJORITY of systems, no one
would ever raise the bar. I have a 400MHz system too, but I'm glad software is
actually evolving. I'll *eventually* be able to afford a system that runs
it...

I'm racing it on a voodoo2 12 meg card, inside my Celeron 400 that has 64
meg of pc100 ram (ready to overclock) 800 X 600.
In practice mode (offline) I admit I've only tried to race 10 opponents, the
gfx are turned down to 1/2 on the slider, car detail is medium, mirror on-
note it toggles between off- low-high detail by pressing M, IMHO I get
enough "running and passing" to be learning the new game physics and I'm not
as picky as some can be, as I get to this point knowing full well Ill have
some things to upgrade.
Ok, frame rate is roughly 15-21 with cars, however I do not see the stands,
but wow I see the safety fence I used to shut off... the smoke from a wreck
will Kill my rate down really bad!!! below 8 even seen 3fps at times. But
all in all I could turn more stuff down but I think it is playable...
Meanwhile I'm deciding on maybe a Geforce MX 32 meg card, Ill be also
Overclocking the 400 (if I can figure out the settings again, (was a
guaranteed overclocing combo, but I never overclocked it after the 1st
couple of weeks) don't ask why I quit overclocking, it was a financial
"fear" reason not system stability problem.
I still have 3dsound, through My A3d (version 1) card, heard I could gain
fps, by turning down sound preferences but I'm not doing it yet.
Now I don't know crap about the voodoo Banshe but if it is more of a card
than the Monster 2 from diamond then it prolly play better than I got. One
of the best things I did was install Direct x 8.0a... Before 8a, the demo
sucked sewer water, after 8a demo runs good, & now the full game runs good.
Find the most up to date card drivers if I were you.
My biggest complaint is, My Trustmaster Wheel is Trash - pots - flakey
readings even in TM control panel, even though I have ACM game card.
That is MY biggest problem.
Hell, give it a try, cant be any worse looking than Original Nascar (1)
before I got my 1st 4 meg card!!! Remember guys, we move up every time (and
For me, ONLY when) the latest release of Nascar comes out, so what's all the
whiiiiiiiiining about???
or did you guys upgrade to play something else?
if so what else was there?!?!?!?!?!!!!! HEHEHEHEHE
good luck
