I'm thinking about getting N4, but am wondering how it compares overall on
the tracks besides the demo to nascar heat. I want nascar 4, but am
wondering how much merit all the negative posts have.
NASCAR 4 versus NASCAR Heat
A prospective buyer asked how NASCAR 4 compared with NASCAR Heat. Most preferred N4 for physics, damage and multiplayer, though several noted that Heat ran much better on slower machines such as a PIII 500 with a Voodoo3. Posters discussed GeForce2 upgrades, and the thread ended with a squabble over the cost of upgrading.
Automated summary.
N4 blows NH out of the water.

It's always normal to have negative comments after a title is released.
People who like the title don't really praise it over the NG's. But be sure
that the amount of negative message for NH was immensly higher then what we
have presently with N4.
N4 is presently the most complete racing sim ever.

They both have their positive and negative aspects, but I don't
think you can go wrong if you were to pick either or both of
them up.

I don't think so. If they can fix the remaining issues with Heat then
it is a very worthy contender, IMO.

I'll say this: I had Heat for about 24 hours. The lack of a damage model kinda
killed it for me right off the bat. I understand that they patched it, but
that was inexcusable for me to release a *sim* without an adequate damage
model. A game is okay without damage, at least to me, but then it has to come
out as a game.
I understand that they came out with a patch, but, that came out after I had
already returned my CD. So, the current state of NH isn't something I can
comment on, but I did have to mention my experience. Your milage may vary.
NH is much better sim on lower end systems-ie anything less than 1ghz and
less than GEforce GTS...no comparison...

Well - to put it in other words - NH is not better than N4, but N4
simply can't be run on a slower system..
I have a PIII500 V3 3000, and in 640 resolution, allmost all graphics
off or on lowest detail, I get a smashing 10-15 fps at the back of a
full grid (4 cars drawn in front, 2 at the rear).
With a crash in front of me, it even drops back to 4-5 fps.
And yes, 36fps in GPL with a full field.
NH runs perfect with a full field, and imho the graphics of NH are
much better than N4.
Too bad the bugs of NH never got sorted out, it could have been a
killer.

I really enjoy the AI plowing into you while pitting and on yellow
flags. The damage is bad, and if you crack up the front end you'll see
no motor under the hood. What this......... a propane car ! The
way they start a race is poor IMO . I would not recomend it to no
one as a matter of fact I feel like a fool for buying it, but then again
it was bought to hold me over to N4 was released so
it suited its purpose.

I actually think NH does a great job of physics modeling, so practice
mode and short races without cautions are fun.

So you've compared NH and N4 on a P3 800, P3850, P3 700, AMD 900, etc etc.

Well, I would have uninstalled NH sooner, except I thought I already had. I
quit playing it right after the first patch was released, once I discovered
the patch didn't really fix anything that mattered much. I've been waiting
for the next patch ever since.
Looks Iike I'll be waiting a long, long time . . .

Not really - there's a lot of talk here how N4 performs on different
systems. For one thing N4 doesn't seem to run nicely on a V3 card.
As I said, PIII500 V3 here.
I could upgrade my gfx card to a GFII, but I heard that that is not
much use on a system slower than 800mhz.
Yes, you can run N4 on a PII 266, but I'd like to run N4 with more
than 2 AI cars and with some graphic details on..
I'm -not- complaining that N4 needs such a high-end system, GPL hardly
run ok with a full grid on most pc's when it was released - but for
people with a lower-end system (OH MY GOD I have my PIII 500 for 6
months now and it's allready a lower-end system!!) NH can be a very
good alternative, simply because N4 is too demanding for lower-end
systems.

Nowwwww, you know you haven't :)
Look , I am an avid gamer who is pretty picky about how games look when
running them. I run N4 on a cheap ass Celeron chip ( 566), overclocked to
850, and a GeForce2 MX card. 128 mb of pc100 ram.
It is great on my system. No, I don't have world and detail on full, and no
I don't have draw ahead at 100%, and no I am not drawing 42 cars ahead.
However, I have it set about middle of the road, the sim is downright
gorgeous on my system, and I have very playable frame rates - averaging
around 35-50 fps depending on the situation.
Point being - Papy has scaled this thing to where it can be played on a wide
variety of systems. Folks should not be discouraged about buying the sim
unless they are really out of date on their system. Plus, I really like
knowing that when I finally part with some money and get that 1ghz chip and
new motherboard, that I will be able to raise the bar in the graphics
department in the sim and enjoy it even more.
I hate to think some lurkers might be reading what you stated below and
steer away from getting N4 being afraid of it not running worth a crap. It's
an awesome sim , and know what? It has a money back guarentee. Sure, it
probably isn't for everybody, however I think most folks that purchase it
are not going to be dissastisfied,

Just curious.. why would anyone want 42 cars drawn ahead anyways? When you
are behind them you can only see 2 or 3 ahead of you.. Once the race gets
going you can not see half-way around the track to the lead cars anyways.

One thing I figure it would help is when there was a big pileup the
turn before you. One incident I recall where an accident occured with
about 10 cars, I thought I had picked a nice little gap I could
squeeze through, but as soon as I got halfway through the gap, a car
appeared right before me and I ended up t-boning him. If I had 42 cars
drawn ahead, that gap wouldn't have appeared.

About upgrading - Did anyone here with a PIII500 upgrade from a V3
card to a V5 or GFII card? Did it help?
Someone told me that it's no use buying a better gfx card with a
PIII500 processor..

Hi,
I only have the demo but I did the same upgrade (V3 to GF 2MX) on an

games, the difference is easily noticeable. On average, I'd say the demo
profited 30-40% in FPS. Probably the use of T&L helps a bit, and I'd
dare to say it's true especially with slower processors. I have no idea
if it's of any use when other cars are nearby, but I gather that the
relative percentage in improvement should still be about the same.

Help with your frame rate and unless there are 20 cars in that wreck it
should work ok for you.
We are all still experimenting..

physics are better in N4....read my post on phys in n4 vrs nheat.

Agree, it runs great on my PIII500 V3 in 640 res with all graphics off
and no AI cars!
Oh well, tomorrow I'll get a new pc, PIII866, saturday I'm going to
buy one of those GFII cards (don't know which one yet) so then I can
run N4 too. Hey, the PIII500 was allready a half year old, it was time
to upgrade anyway.
Andre
The card will make a big difference. I had a V3 and switched to GF2 and
never
looked back. Great on everything I play GPL, N4, Crimson Skies, Janes WWII
Fighters, etc etc. and hey all on W2K !

You don't get graphics glitches in the sky in WWIIF on a Geforce? I
did when I had one six months ago.

I don't need the fix. I bought a Voodoo5. Thx anyway.

I'd be interested in the fix as I have problems in WW2 fighters since i
switched from my V3 to my G2gts.

I'd agree, but it doesn't!
I could give a rat's patootie about pit guys running around and all
that other junk.. Being able to control the car with NO stuttering or
jumping is all that really matters to me..

Hmmmmmmmm, you forgot to add it was your opinion because on my system your
statment are not accurate at
all and misleading.
Well, GPL runs smooth as a baby's butt on my system now, and is drop dead
beautiful. Wasn't so when it came out. Imagine what N4 will look like on
systems a year or two from now. I suppose they could have scaled it down to
today's levels, but we would be dissappointed in a few months.

Well Golly Gee Whiz Andy.
Us here folk in Mayberry aint like ya rich city folk.
We don't get ta sit in a fancy office sipping mocha coffee all day
acting like were working hard and getting big bucks for barely usin'
our heads.
No, us folk in here in Mayberry have to work hard.. hard haaaaard I
tells ya.
ANd we don't get to upgrade to the newest thang every few months.
No sometimes I expect we even have to wait a year or so before we
upgrade.
Yes sir, so you take that better-than-thou-yankee-rich-boy attitude
and shove it that stinky ass of your .. yes siree bob.

Double edged sword really.. (and I tried to find something that didn't
sound like a pun) when you get those who spend $$'s on a 'only been
obsolete for a week' system and complain they can't run 'Insert game X'
at full detail and subsequently return it, or climb every mountain
yelling the poor coding, lazy programmers schtick.
I don't mind turning graphics options down, but I'm not sure eye candy
alone will give the game legs.
Cheers,
Rod.

WTH are you talking about?
Bud, I work my ass off, as hard as anyone, and have all my life just so I
can have a roof over my head and food on the table.
When I upgrade, I do a little at a time, and go the cheapest route I can.
Celeron 566 - 90 bucks - I overclock it to 850.
GF2 MX - 100 bucks
And btw, I am from about as hick a small country town as you can get from
the hills of east TN.
What did I say to deserve a response like that? I only try to offer help and
advice where I can.
Sheeze,

Gee, I'd better not talk about how the release of N4 made me upgrade
my system to a P4 :)
And I'm *also* from the hills of East TN :)
