I did this when GPL came out, now I am faced with the same
circumstances with N4. The CD-ROM, it seems, must be the culprit, as
several people are mentioning that they are having trouble with this
area. I am having trouble with this for sure. I just got a new
computer this past Christmas, and now I am faced with spending MORE
money to upgrade to make some spinning piece of plastic run better?
NOPE!
Been there -- done that a few years ago , and it was an exercise in
frustration in visiting Allison Hine's web site and this person's web
site and that person's web site, and on and on and on and on and on.
And this went on for what seemed for an eternity. I finally
uninstalled the darned sim and it remains in the box to this day in
pristine condition.
I see the makings of the same thing now, I don't think I am going to
fall into the same trap of falling into the "SIMULATION MONEY PIT".
After a while, after you find that the online racing has a bunch of
people with "room temperature" IQ's who revel in the fact that they
enjoy running into the competitors rather than honestly competing, I
feel it isn't worth it any more.
Refusing to upgrade hardware just to run NASCAR 4
A user complained he would not buy new hardware such as a CD-ROM drive just to run NASCAR 4, and also disparaged online racers. Some sympathised and advised against buying a drive for one game, while others said PCs are an expensive hobby and he should try the game first. Morris Jones reported only 30 fps on a high-end Pentium 4.
Automated summary.
I remember when I bought Nascar 1, I could not run all the details, all
the cars drawn ahead on my 486 33mHz, 1 meg video card, 4 meg of RAM,
even though Indycar Racing had run smoothly. So I settle for 12 cars
ahead, no decals. I was getting decent framerates, no much more. Back
then, processor speeds were doubling every month!
Then I bought a P 166mHz, the same deal happened with other sims I
bought (can't remember if it was GPL). Over the years, I gradually
upgraded my systems; my PII 400 was running GPL a little faster, but not
with all the details. N3 was ok on it. Then I got my P3 866; GPL really
flew on it, was able to put high res. Now N4 comes out... of course, I
can't run every thing maxed out. A year or two down the road, when I
upgrade my system again, I will be able to, though. Of course, there's
probably going to be another game that's going to require a lot.
What's the catch? It's a hobby I'm willing to put money on and it's the
reality of PC biz. If you're not willing to do that, I recommand you
stick to consoles or get a Mac ;)

I would say it was time
to upgrade regardless of N4's requirments.

I find most online racers quite intelligable, likable people. However, I do
see your point somewhat. I think everyone of us has been made to look a fool
by the internet conditions he/she happens to be racing under at one time or
another.

DON'T buy a new CD-rom for this one game. Ridiculous.

Let's let him *actually find out* whether it does or doesn't run on

PS - I agree that this Sierra copy protection scheme is stupid.
Almost as stupid as not buying the game because it *may* not run on
one's machine... :)

Sierra even has a 90 day money-back guarantee.
And what was wrong with GPL? You complained about its online

respects that you didn't even run it offline?
Yes, there are many resources available for GPL. But how many of
them are *necessities*? IMO, GPL was one of the most bug-free sim
releases that I have seen. The patches to it have been more to add
enhancements (dedicated servers, FF, D3D) than to correct any
deficiencies in the original issue.
And now that you have a new, more capable PC, you still don't run
GPL? Why? Perhaps its more a matter of your personal taste not
liking GPL, than any true deficiencies in the sim itself?

Once again, it seems like you form your conclusions from your own
biases, not from any observation of reality. Anyone who has driven in
a good online GPL league would know you statement is groundless. (I
assume the same would be true of other sim's online leagues, although
I don't have personal experience of them.)
A troll?, maybe. I'd think if you were truely interested in N4,
you would at least give it a try. Your two posts here only seem to be
a senseless piss'n'moan ramble.

Just my 2 cents, I did do the upgrade and
still can't but barely run everything maxed out.
P4 1.5ghz
256 PC800 , 400fsb
Geforce 2 Ultra 64
avg. 30fps in N4, in D3D, or opengl.
Heat, though with better graphics maxed out, 50+ fps.
So I think again it is because papy has not updated their graphics engine in
so long it can't really take full advantage of these newer graphics card.
Think about it , they use to use Rendition on pretty much the same graphics
engine, which Indy Car 2 did look very good on it.

Regardless, ANYONE who can't get the game to work with a perfectly good
CD-rom should definitely not go out an buy a new one just to run one game.
I'm the last person to complain about having to upgrade for a game (CPU,
video card, etc.), but buying an extra CD-rom when the one you have is
perfectly good is ridiculous.

Yes, that sux. and all you can do to avoid it is get in a League where
the others play fair, or race the AI, or quit sim racing altogether.
Up to you.

Celeron with 32 megs of ram. Upgrade? Love to! Unfortunately I just
had to drop another $100.00 to replace the dying HD, so that blew my
upgrade budget for some of that wonderfully low priced RAM that's
available today. I want to get a T-Bird upgrade someday soon, but not
until I can pay back the money I borrowed so I could move to Texas and
take this new job I found after being unemployed for six months.
There are a lot of people who actually have to make legitimate
sacrifices to develop the sort of system that can run a demanding sim
like GPL tolerably. They do it because they are passionate about sims
just like most of us here on r.a.s. I cannot see why anyone would be
surprised or call somebody a troll because they happened to respond
passionately to the fact that Papyrus has raised the bar considerably
for hardware requirements with Nascar4. He *wants* the game. He
*can't* run it with his equipment. He's upset about that. I'm upset
about it, too, just like I was when I tried the Nascar Heat demo.
After about five minutes I said, "Screw them!" and deleted it from my
systems because NH didn't consider my system "acceptable" as a
platform. I won't even bother reading the box N4 comes in until I can
scrape up the sheckles to upgrade my computer sometime towards the end
of the year...

So now, you should be able to run GPL just fine. <g> Re-install it, and have

Huh? If not for GPL and N4, why would you even NEED a computer?

Just to add a bit of fuel to this fire, I must say that I'm more than
a bit miffed about this business of releasing games that *require*
hardware that hasn't even been invented yet, just to run it like they
advertise it!!!!!!
Here's the deal... You buy a new game, then wait for about 5-6 years
to open it.. If you do that, the hardware *might* be available by that
time to run it properly! If you wait a couple more years, it might
even be close enough to being completely obsolete so you can pick it
up for what it's really worth, rather than what they sell the latest
and greatest (of the week) for!
