I'm hoping someone here can settle a bet...
I recall years back reading about the Bennetton (ca. 1986) F1 doing 0-100MPH
and back in some staggering amount of time (9 secs?). Does anyone know how
fast F1 cars will do a 1/4 mile? Has it ever been clocked? Please help me
teach the straight-line boy a lesson.
Thanks,
Glenn

2000 Ferrari F1-2000: 9.00 seconds @ 187.02 mph.

My co-worker runs a street stock @ 8.33. I
didn't presume to beat him, just show him an F1 car was close. On top speed
in the 1/4 it is much faster I see.
Thanks again,
Glenn

BTW, according to a CART/IRL test in Popular Mechanics, 1998 CART machine
did the 1/4 in 9.3 at 165.5 mph. Zanardi had real trouble getting enough
heat in the tires for proper traction though (he was fighting for
traction during the entire 1/4 mile), so perhaps faster times were
possible with heated tires.

I'd love to know what a 2000 CART vehicle could do.
Of course, all non-drag racing series have rules that slow the cars down
to a certain extent, so these stats don't prove anything. It still
interesting though, particularly in comparison to street car stats.

The problem the Formula One car has is it wasnt meant to accelerate from a
dead stop, it was meant to accelerate from 60-100mph out of a corner. They
fight for traction while accelerating until they get enough traction via
downforce. Ill bet the F1 car accelerates harder from 60mph to 150mph than
your buddies street stock.

As I recall the benetton ran about a 8.9sec 148 mph trap thru the quarter mile,
which is pretty good.
But top fuel dragsters routinely run 4.5 sec 330mph quarters with over 5000
Horsepower, which is a whole different magnitude of acceleration. They can even
out accelerate fighter jets being launched with steam catapults from aircraft
carriers from 0 to 300mph. These cars are the only ones that look awesome fast
on a TV screen, where Cart and F1 cars look almost like they are cruising
sometimes at 200 plus MPH.
I was pondering your question a bit more and it occurred to me just how amazing
the acceleration of a totally stock off the showroom floor street motorcyle is
these days. These relatively mildly tuned 35 MPG street bikes ( Suzuki Hayabusa
1300) and ( Kawasaki zx12) ran high 9 second 144mph quarter miles, and over
192mph top speed, for less than the price of a subcompact car. Also, the
Kawasaki ZX12 was detuned from the original bike Kawasaki intended to release
due to european legislation banning 200 plus MPH motorcycles, and the
prereleased ZX12 reportedly tested at 9.5 sec 150 MPH quarter mile and over
200mph top speed.
Thats about as close as most of us can afford to getting the feel of
acceleration of a f1 car.
I think I read the *same* article that you read, but I think the 0-100mph
time was more like 3.0 or 3.1 seconds. The reason I remember this is that
it was my first real indicator of the level of performance these cars
attain.

With the right rider (not me), my slow 600cc ZX-6R does high 10s or low 11s,
topping out at just under 160mph. I speak with some experience. All this
for <8k. The only problem is that it sits in my garage lonely and dejected
while the snow is on the ground and the weather drops below 40F (that when
the Audi fills in). Stock modern sportbikes have no (stock or near-stock)
equivalent on the streets as far as zero to (say for example) 100mph
acceleration. At the very top end, then you may see some high performance
sportscars starting to gain ground on you. If you want to do a comparison
that factors in $$, then there is nothing that comes close on the street,
and few (if anything) on the track. Incidentally, given twisty roads and
good drivers/riders in a properly setup sportscar vs a properly setup
sportbike, the car has the (significant) traction advantage and will
outperform going into the apex of a turn. Post-apex, the sportbike will
accelerate away. But I digress...
