Creator of Mini Cooper dies
The creator of the Mini Cooper car, John Cooper, has died aged 77.
The former motor racing driver developed the souped-up version of the Mini
in 1961.
The cars famously featured in the 1969 movie The Italian Job, starring
Michael Caine.
Mr Cooper, who lived at Worthing, West Sussex, was awarded a CBE for
services to the motor industry in the New Year's honours list last year.

He was a great innovator, from the motorcycle-engined Cooper-JAPs that Moss,
et alia, learned to drive on, to the rear-engined 'revolution' at
Indianapolis.
He was asked if the T81 (Cooper-Maserati) could be called a "Cooper" in GPL
and he said "Sure!" but his lawyers weren't quite so sanguine. They pointed
out that, by 1967, Surbiton's little Cooper Car Company was owned by
Britain's Maserati distributors (which is why the ancient 36-valve V12 wound
up in the Cooper chassis), so rather than get into a cat fight over
licensing rights, Papy avoided the issue by calling the car a "Coventry" in
the game.
He will be missed.

The sports section
that generally thinks the only racing is Nascar. I was suprised to see the
notice of his death in there.
Holidays and deaths.... My condolences to the family. He lived a long
and proper life from what I've heard. Well done.
