Wasn't he the driver who had that horrible crash where his legs were exposed
during the Indy 500??

I still get shivers down my back when I *think* of that picture.

This was from the article:
"His racing career ended May 28, 1995, with a six-car crash on the first lap
of the Indy 500. His car was sheared virtually in half, and he was sent
hurtling into the Turn 1 wall with his legs unprotected in front of him.
Horrific photos showed the remains of Fox's car flying through the air with
the driver's legs dangling near the wall.
Fox suffered a severe head injury and was in a coma for five days, finally
regaining consciousness June 2. By July, he was out of the hospital and at
an Indianapolis rehab center."

When I went with my family to Las Vegas this summer, we first had to drive to
the Indianapolis airport to catch our flight. Because we were early, my dad
and I stopped into the racing collectibles store in the airport. In the back,
they had a series of pictures taken of the accident for sale. Much more
horrific than the actual footage. I don't believe I've ever seen anything
quite as disturbing...
On a strange coincidental note, when I was in Vegas, I went to the Sahara Hotel
to catch a show and noticed the huge auto racing area in the back. There they
had some simulators, both NASCAR and IRL. I drove the IRL one (poorly at best
because I wasn't used to it. <g> ) But I had the strangest damn thing
happen. On lap 1, someone lost it or something and got into me, sending my car
smashing into the outside wall hard with the front end and ended up launching
me into the air and back down. The crash was remarkably similar to Stan Fox's
Indy 500 accident...
And BTW, I ended up losing about 5 laps in that race trying to get into the
pits. My steering was so destroyed I could barely turn the car.

Robin Miller of the Indianapolis Star did a column on that today...

He makes it sound like Fox never really did recover...

Strangely enough, the head injury was much more severe than any damage
to feet and legs. I saw an article within the past year or so about
Fox along with other former drivers permanently sidelined with head
and spine injuries , , , including Parnelli Jones' son and Sam Schmidt
We wish them all well and offer sympathies to Fox's family, who have
already been through so much . . .

His _only_ non-head injury was a deep bruise to one ankle. That's
it, at least according to my feeble memory. The head injury was so bad,
though, that they transported him by ambulance, saving the helicopter for
another driver who could actually benefit from it. (No one needed it, as it
turned out, I think. I'll have to dig out my newspaper collection...)
We'll miss ya, Stan. *salute*

He was originally from Janesville, WI (about a half hour North of
where I live). One night about a year after his crash, we went to the
Rockford Speedway and he was there. He looked well, but you could
certainly tell by his movements that getting around was taking some
serious concentration. I still have the Autosport "Year in Pictures"
with a big photo of the wreck. It was horrfying enough to see on TV
but to see a big still photo of it still gives me a chill.

definite memory laps, even though he did seem sharp, intelligent, and
alert), but physically he seemed pretty "normal." I was fortunate
enough to get to race go-karts against him in April of this year, and
he was plenty fast then. I heard that he was very prone to fatigue,
though, and that may be what got the better of him in the end.
