Just another reason to stay far away for AOL.

At the risk of sounding stupid...what's a "win socket"?
Pops
My modem recently stopped working. (I have cable for all my internet/gaming
access). I assumed the phone modem crapped out, but could it be from
installing AOL6? The error said the the computer couldn't find the modem
even though it was connected. (I tried switching Com ports and reinstalling
to no avail)

Seriously, does AOL have a fix for that? If not, can we say "class action
lawsuit?" :)

This same thing happened to me. I have a cable modem also and as soon as I
downloaded and installed 6.0 it was all over but the crying. Calls to AOL said
it was a DSL problem. No amount of explaining that I didnt HAVE DSL would sway
them. I called my cable provider and they sent out a tech, again to no avail.
End result?
F-disk and reinstall everything. Two days to backup and reinstall.
I can't believe that AOL can get away with this! And still they continue to
advertise the upgrade.

I say sue.
Well, I've tried everything but that. Wouldn't be easier, though, to just
re-format the drive, then restore a backup from there?
That's what I plan to do later tonight.

If you must have AOL, get another ISP and just use the "Bring Your Own
Connection" option. Like many others, I began my internet experience on AOL
and found it wholly unsuitable for online simming, but I wanted to stay in
touch with the many friends I had made in the Grandstand Motorsports message
boards, unaccessable from outside AOHell. Once I switched to Mindspring, I
found my VROC connection much more stable, the ping rate dropping by half. I
have no problems using 6.0, but the interface is awful. There is a special
place in hell reserved for the graphic designers who designed this piece of
crap.

I know this is a few days old, but there is another way.
Uninstall AOHell 6.
Go to the Control panel.............open up add/remove programs.
click on the windows setup tab...open up communication tools (might just say "communication")
uncheck dialup networking.
hit ok, ok...yes to any version conflicts and no when it asks you to restart
go to start>run> and type regedit and hit enter
go to file>export registry file. save it in the desktop (to keep it simple if we need it later), give it a file name, any name will work. hit save.
hit the plus sign next to Hkey _local _ machine.
plus sign next to system.
then current control set
then services
now, right click on winsock 2 and delete it.
close the registry editor and restart the machine...
go back to the control panel and open add/remove program.
go back to windows setup
open communication and put a check back in dial-up network. hit ok, ok.
if it comes up with version conflicts, just say yes to all of them and then say yes to restart...
extract winsock.dll and wsock32.dll using the System File Checker (start>run> sfc) if you have Win98. Win95 have fun with this step and WinME is slightly different from 98, but close enough. Extract winsock.dll first then do wsock32.dll cause wsock32.dll will ask you to restart.
should be good to go.
If that does not work, enter the Network config (control panel> network) and remove the tcp/ip for the network card, hit ok, restart. Go back into Network config and add tcp/ip back in. If you still don't get anything...AOL did a damn good job of hosing your system.
