I just got GPL. I installed all the patches and it still disconnects after
about 5 minutes and puts me back to the windows desktop.
I'm sure this is old stuff but I'm brand new at it.

Asus A7V
Windows 98
nVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M64
Sound blaster live! x-gamer 5.1
52x cd rom
128 Meg PC133
19" monitor
GP2 runs great on this PC.

Do you mean it disconnects from an online race within 5 minutes (in which
case what kind of connection/modem/settings do you use?), or does it crash
back to the desktop within 5 minutes of you running it offline too?
BTW: GP2 better well run great on a 900MHz Thunderbird!! -Methinks even GP3
should be "very playable"... ;-)

Are you using the OpenGL or the D3D graphics patch?

I don't really know much about the use of D3D with GPL, so I'll leave that
to others, but there's some basic stuff we need to check off.
Anything else running that might try to grab your CPU's attention in the
background? -Screensaver, any form of powersaving, Maintenance Wizard,
Office Find Fast, ICQ, Etc... ?
Are you overclocking the CPU or the graphics card? All cooling fans working?
Running at least DirectX7a and latest drivers for everything?

I have GPL running ok now. I kept uninstalling and installing and using the
patches. I think maybe I was not restarting the computer as ofted as I should
have been.
