A casual surf-around of Linux sites just digs up FPS games ad nauseum. Any
interesting tidbits of a racing sim being ported to, or written for, Linux?

What FPS games ? Where ? :)
Uwe Schuerkamp (sorry if I spelled wrong) has a GPL for Linux
petition. It would have been fantastic with racing games for linux,
since then I could just throw Windows ME off my harddisk.
The only real problem as I see it, is the lack of controller drivers
for Linux. Probably not much chance of getting my MS FF to work with FF.

never catch on :)

TuxRacer is out and ported to Windows too. Not a sim though. But kinda
fun arcade action!
There is another one coming out any day now out at
http://www.lokigames.com. It a port of the Windows program MindRover.
Maybe not technically a racer, but there *are* 6 racing-related
scenarios included in the full retail version. What you do is take a
robotic vehicle which is about the size of a R/C car, choose from
different components & wire them together, also specifying the settings
for each component with it's own trigger variables and such. Once you
enter into the arena to compete against the AI, the car is on it's own.
It'll perform however you've programmed it to, there is no hands-on
control of your vehicle in the arena. I'll include the write up the
game provides for each of the racing scenarios below:
Fans of Burnout & NHRA should like the Drag Race:
"Be the first vehicle to the finish line-- but there's an electric fence
only a meter beyond the finish & if you fry, you lose. Note: There is a
6 second countdown at the start of this race. Start too soon & you are
disqualified."
F1 fans, here's Hallway Racing:
"A race thru the hallways. The track is not very wide, your opponent is
not very smart. Just get around the track first to win -l lap."
DTR racers, it's got Figure 8 Racing:
"First vehicle to make 3 complete laps wins. You must go around the
track in the direction that you start, crossing thru the middle & then
hitting the far side of each loop."
NASCAR racers, it's got Oval Team Race:
"Get around the track as many times as possible in 60 seconds. Each
vehicle can score lap points for your team."
ReVolt fans get 2 different ones, the first is Track Battle:
"Get around the track 3 times to win." (It's a smallish oval, with
weapons)
The other is called Arena Race:
"Try to get around the large track 3 times while using weapons to help
defeat your enemy! If you die, you will not start back at the
beginning. Instead, you will respawn in the exact same place 5 seconds
later." (It's a large, winding "road course")
This thing has been a real blast to play. I eagerly await the Linux
port, I've preordered it for just $28. The main site has the Windows
demo on it. I think the scenario it comes with is the Sumo Arena. You
gotta push the other vehicle off the mat. <g> It also has a couple
Tutorial scenarios to get you aquainted with the program. The site is:
http://www.MindRover.com.
No, I'm in no way affiliated with this program or company. Now if we
could just get GPL ported to Linux. That, and The Operational Art of
War would make my day!

I made recommendations for Sierra titles to be converted over on the loki
newsgroup and they basically just laughed at me <VBG>

Yeah, Sierra doesn't have sense enough to blaze the trails to new &
upcoming markets. Which is why, in the FPS world, Linux has Q3A, Unreal
Tournament, Soldier of Fortune, but HalfLife is missing. Oh well, their
loss I guess. There's enough software there to keep me busy either
way. If they don't want my money, don't much make me no nevermind. (I
learned English in the same school as Dave Henrie, LOL!) The suits need
to take refresher courses in marketing. <g>
