Yes, sorry for being a bit curt - it's just that personal preference is so
important in the wheel department that I 'm not sure how much usefulness
long advice can have.

Which racing wheel to buy in late 2000
Simon H asked which of several force-feedback wheels to buy. Replies stressed personal preference and trying before buying, with many praising the Microsoft Sidewinder FF wheel for durability. Larry criticised the Logitech Formula Force GP after returning one, and others mentioned slottweak.com, the Hyperstimulator and Frex Momo conversions.

Hi. If I was going to buy a wheel now, what should I choose?
microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback Wheel 1.0
Trust Force Feedback Race Master II
ThrustMaster 360 Modena Racing Wheel PRO
Logitech Wingman Formula Force GP
or another suggestion?

Here we go *again*...
Some (me included) love the MSFF. Many like the LWFF. The ACT RS is good.
The Thomson is excellent, but expensive (and no FF). Test them out. Buy
your favourite. OK?

GTX_SlotCar helped me decide, goto www.slottweak.com
I ended up with the Ferrari wheel, and am very happy.

How'd you narrow it down to those? What about Active Labs?
I've read that the logitech pedals aren't as good as the wheel, but then I
read that the 2nd version (USB only?) improved the pedals and made the rest
of the package a little cheaper.

Well, obviously it's not always possible to have a full test. But I was in
my local Staples[1] today - they had a Logitech Wingman (non-FF) out on
display to be tried for size, and when I checked out my new MSFF USB
(finally!) I was told that I could bring it back if it wasn't satisfactory
(thankfully not necessary - it's lovely) - even if it wasn't faulty. A bit
like the EB returns policy, but Staples don't do it on software.
Failing that, I've found that smaller independent shops will quite often
let you have a quick blast - trouble is, they usually don't have a great
range of wheels.
[1] Judging by previous posts, I'd guess this is something like Office
Depot - big warehouse-type place, sells all sorts of vaguely office-related
stuff (and games!). My local branch (Kidderminster) only opened recently,
but I've found the customer service to be very good - *much* better than
CUrrys/Dixons/Comet.

I've seen Logitech's and MS's on display but never hooked up to a FF enabled
racing game that I was familiar with (usually never hooked up to a PC at
all). So I could only compare how they looked, and even then the pedals
were elsewhere.
I saw a Thrustmaster FF the other day in a box at staples, and I've never
seen a Actlabs in person.
So purchasing decisions are really driven more by reviews & price:
I've yet to find a review of the Thrustmaster/Guillmot FF. $159cdn locally
From what I've read the weak point of the Logitec is the pedals, and they've
been improved (I think?). $129cdn locally
The shifter option looks really cool for the Actlabs RS, but it's already
the most expensive without it (over the net anyway), and on-wheel padals
would likely make for faster lap times then a traditional shifter anyway
(easier to hook and un-hook too). The pictures of the pedals make them look
pretty small. $139US + shipping (= $200+ cdn)
The MS ff looks cheap, and Bill already has enough billions $100 cdn
locally.

The MSFFW is a good, solid wheel that will last for years. It's optical
encoders don't skip a beat. Ever...
However, Microsoft is being very hard-headed about supporting their hardware
under Win2K.
Forget the Logitech Force GP. I just returned one today under my Best Buy
Extended Warranty.
I originally bought it because the (excellent) Wingman software is fully
Win2K compliant.
Then, the thing started to self-destruct inside, I think. The sqeaking
noises got so bad it scared the cat out of the room.
My original MSFFW (gameport version) is some 2 years old and is still
operating perfectly. I got a new one for the USB connection.
The MSFFW pedals are really comfortable, and they don't slide around like
many pedals.
The _could_ take a file to the back of them at the factory, though. They
can cut you if you drive barefoot, and reach around the back of them to pull
them closer.

They also have a reasonably priced ($12, I think) 2 year replacement policy
you can get. This policy is what got me out of my Logitech Force GP, and
I'm glad I got it.
It's nice walking in with a broken one, and walking out with a new one in 5
minutes instead of messing with the manufacturer.
I'm not much on extended warranties, but for the price the Best Buy
replacement warranty makes sense for controllers...

The MSFFW is hardly cheap. I'm not the only one with one that's some 2
years, been beat to death, and still works the same way it did when new.

and it started to make all kinds of bad noises, I got rid of it.
The gearing in the new LTFGP is VERY course too...
The pedals are better. Unfortunately, the downsized the base to the point
where only 1/2 your foot is on it. Better than the original, but the took 2
steps forward and one step back.

I think what he meant was that it "looks cheap". I don't agree, FWIW, but
in any case the point is how it feels, and how it lasts, and on both those
scores I've been very happy with mine - which is why I've just got another
one!

Simon, give the Logitech Wingman (Red - w/FF) a try. I upgraded from the
yellow to red and compared it to several others. Haven't looked back since.
Don't know if you've ever felt a real Momo steering wheel -- that's what it
feels like. Good luck.

>That's my point, I can't "try" them in the box stores, I can only go by how
they look and what I can read. You'll have to admit the MS looks like it
should be attached to a playstation.
People running the same sim as me (GPL) claim it takes more CPU, but you're
right it will appear to out-last a LT because of it's construction.
I'm leaning towards the Thrustmaster because of the bigger pedals (and my
old TM has lasted well) if I can find any supporting reviews.
or you could get a Microsoft Force Feedback and do a Frex upgrade on
it. Then you get a Momo wheel. Then again it is rather expensive.
