Is it all over for r.a.s.? I don't know abt. you, but I've about had it
with all the bilious incivility, advice about how to get into heaven or
Paris Hilton's tighty whiteys, what's wrong w. America (or Namibia or
Wahabiism or corn-dogs), offers of Viagra-by-mail or videos of American
soldiers getting killed, speculations on what Jesus might drive, et cetera.
This used to be a fun place to hang out with sim-racers with mutual
interests. It's become a wretched hive of scum and villainy. Methinks it's
time to move on.
Notable threadIs r.a.s. dying? Off-topic noise and sim fatigue
Steve Smith lamented that r.a.s. was overrun by spam, politics and incivility while developers and real discussion had gone. Others agreed or blamed specific posters, while some defended Usenet over web forums. Several suggested the deeper cause was the lack of a unifying sim like GPL and stagnant releases. Larry and others also discussed rating systems for online racing.

These things do seem to go in phases though. Someone joins, stirs up a few
old debates and goes again.
The problem is that the lure of Usenet seems to prevent otherwise sane &
logical minds from not having to have the last word and a pub debate can
last for years...
I think RAS will be the last place to know what is in store for in the sim
world, few developers or close contacts to developers are going to want to
share their thoughts here based on previous experiences. Shame.

There's a flip side to that coin though - what developers do we really
care to hear from?
There is Papyrus/FIRST who need no advice and then a bunch of arseholes
out to make money out of the genre. I don't want wankers in here looking for
pats on the back - I want a company to give Papy/FIRST a true run for their
money. I've been waiting for this since I've been online for the last 9
years and it's yet to happen.
To all ??simulator?? companies other than Papy I say this - YOU'RE
FUCKING USELESS! To this day there is one company in the racing simulator
genre that can do multiplayer code - FFS!
Simbin so far can't even offer dedicated server support or even a proper
results file. And the replay functionality is pathetic. Can't wait for the
big May patch - LOL. What number we up to? 1.1 --> 1.2 --> 1.21 -->
.23 --> 1.3 .......................................... Thanks for the alpha
shit Simbin.
No wonder we talk so much shit - what else is there to do 'til FIRST is
up and running?

Maybe its not this or any group in particular thats failing in the Sim
Racing genre. Could it be that this Sim Racing by its very nature was bound
to fail? Real Racing as you know depends upon accountability. Without it
any idiot can wreck anyone at any time. Thats the current state of Sim
Racing as I see it. The only decent racing is with small cliques that know
each other and drive respectably towards one another. Enter the nameless
faceless internet sim driver and we have a mess that is currently sim
racing. I dont know that it can be fixed either. Thus the migration away
from RAS imo.

I've been a "member" of RAS since (at least) April 1998...possibly
earlier...and there was negligible extraneous posting.
Any crap that was posted invariably had something to do with simulations
(ICR2, NASCAR2, GPL, GP2, GP3 et al) or real-life motor sport and not much
else....certainly nothing about religious terrorism, Viagra or Britney
Spears (thank Christ!).
Nowadays I might check into RAS every couple of days, whereas back when it
was all Geoff Crammond and Papyrus I'd be here every day.
Not any more; it's become a bit like a run-down pub which once-upon-a-time
was your favourite hangout but now you think twice about going there.

No slam against RSC, but I'd take the newsgroup format over a web based
forum any day, broadband or not. With ones favorite news reader, you
can sort, find, apply filters or rules, download quicker and save a
bunch of time in general. Some better web forums have some flexibility,
but none that I've seen come close to even the most basic news reader
software. Sure you can put pictures on the web forums, but that is a
double edge sword especially with all the useless signature pictures
people use. Ugh!
I think the demise (or supposed demise) of this group is not due to the
format but the fact that it is not moderated and/or (as other's have
said), that idiots are encouraged by getting replys to their posts.
Okay, now I'll go back to having fun with LFS S2 alpha ...
Russell
This newsgroup will always be the home of sim racing because it will
never disappear. RSC and the like are great for a lot of reasons but even
they were off the wire not long back.
As far as the off topic stuff goes - well, that's usenet - the price of
freedom. A small price to pay for a place where people can come and tell it
like it really is :) If you can work out the shit from the gold then you see
that this place truely is a treasure that will never suffer from old women
moderators or moderators with agendas/biases. Participation in the off topic
is optional as well.

I think it will be this very issue that FIRST will tackle. The open
servers via Sierra needed policing as does Simbin's though who cares, so
far, about the latter.
Come to think of it, this is one of my personal views towards what a
modern **sim** is - first rate, policed multiplay. So I therefore view
Sierra and Simbin servers as kids games rather than worthy of **sim**
status. Good for a laugh though. :)

Get a clue....
Steve, I think part of it is due to the utter bordom that's taking place in
SIM releases right now.

It's scoring system was FAR superior to Sierra's. The info in Sierra is
almost useless.
They should be scoring top 10's, top 5's, Win's, Poles and other stuff as
well as LPI and rank.
Sierra gives no sense of accomplishment. I firmly believe that's why so few
people care about what happens there in online races.

We need the "one sim to bind them all". GPL used to unify the group...
whether folk loved it or hated it :-) Now there's nothing to bring
everyone together, so we thrash around debating similar sims which don't
really excite us like they should, and dissimilar politics, which excites
us far too much.
Old folk are all the same, always looking for something to moan about.
Next thing you know someone will start a thread moaning about the state of
RAS ;-)

Maybe the shine's simply off sims in general. A physically realistic sim
was a brand new concept when I started posting in '93 on this newsgroup
(here from day 1, so to speak) and there was a certain "wow" factor related
to finally being able to pilot the same *insert favourite racing genre* car
on a somewhat realistic rendering of *insert favourite track here*. The
incremental improvements in sims over the decade are great, and it is
astonishing to compare the newest offerings to ICR1 or World Circuit, but I
still think nothing will quite touch the original discovery of the sim genre
in terms of a catalyst effect for lively discussion. The only other
significant improvement, and this is why it will always be a hot topic, was
the arrival of GPL. It brought the first proper physics engine based on the
danymics of discrete rigid bodies, and represented a departure from more
simple lookup tables. Everything else since then represents an improvement
on the same basic concept. Until proper real-time CFD arrives in a sim, it
will probably be pretty quiet for the gearheads in here (Mech. Eng. myself).

wouldn't count him as a good racer, even if his LPI is through the

To win, you have to finish :) You don't finish by knocking cars out of your
way most of the time. You inevitably become your own victim.
As for the second part of your statement, everyone can't win. There's only
one first place.
That's where the top 5's and 10's come in.
In general, wins don't win championships (unless it's a walk-away).
Consistent Top 5's and 10's do.
