I have a Duron 750 with 96 MB of RAM and a 16 MB TNT2 Ultra card, and
as I have said before, I get 20+ fps and smooth gameplay. If you're
having any problems with frame rates, I recommend the following:
The first thing you might try is to check what your "SystemRating"
value is in the config.ini file (located in your F1CS installation
directory). My Duron 750 is assigned a "SystemRating=3" value by the
game during initial setup and it runs VERY smoothly (20+ fps in nearly
all situations, around 18+ during a start). I tried setting the value
to "SystemRating=5" though, and my performance dropped down into the
mid-teens (17 fps or so max, down to 12 or so at the starts). This can
make a HUGE difference, as I believe the "SystemRating" value
determines how large the textures are; faster systems can handle larger
textures, whereas slower systems are only given smaller textures to
work with (I THINK this is how the "SystemRating" value works, anyway).
On my old AMD K6-2 500 system, for example, I was assigned
a "SystemRating=3" value in F1 2000, but I dropped that down
to "SystemRating=2" and then "SystemRating=1" and saw even better
performance, but the performance came with a price, as the trackside
details (billboards, signs, distance markers, etc.) became much less
crisp and almost blurry (kind of like I was driving without my
contacts!). It was a reasonable tradeoff fo me, though, so I accepted
less crisp graphics in exchange for better frame rates.
So, if you're experiencing poor performance, ALWAYS try taking
your "SystemRating" value down a notch to see if that improves things.
Right now, I'm using a "SystemRating=3" setting on my Duron system,
along with the following tweaks in the graphics menus (click on the
