Technical challenge for you guys

Will this work? Can GPL and other games be made to work using a USB input optical device (generic light chopper) attached to a spinning shaft supported by bearings (yer basic homemade steering aparatus) ? I would think that this would be similar to commercially availiable digital steering wheels, eh? Anyone tried this? what games is it likely to work with?
