Since there just aren't enough of these going around...
First, a couple of problems-
Sound woes! I too have the sound problems others have mentioned; mainly no
sound modulation or pitch change from the engine. Nothing but a ticking
sound and the wind till 3000 revs, then a constant drone. And it continues
when I lift off the gas, thrumming away until I hit pause, then silence
again until 3000rpm. The other sounds, like the tire squeal and rev limiter
don't seem to work properly either, though they ARE there. Sort of.
(EAPCI w/latest CL SB64 drvrs, DX8, using direct sound, but not 3D, 6 sounds
chosen: Not the spiffiest sound card, for sure, but NO other game's ever
given me trouble with it.)
Long load times! Going into a test session or replay for the first time, it
takes my admittedly low-end system 2&1/2 to 3 minutes to load a track.
(C300A@450, 64mb ram, 5400rpm IDE HD) I know the track DAT files are big,
but is this common? Again, no other games do this, and only explorer and
systray are fighting for room. But once loaded, the framerate's pretty good
at 800X600, and the graphics are lovely! As in GPL, detail bias has a huge
impact in FPS.
(BTW - The N4 Michigan DAT file is 20MB, while the one from N3 I use with
GPL is only 5MB! The Michigan TRK file in NH is 8.8MB, for comparison.)
Now, some scattered thoughts about physics and "feel".
If you've converted the N3 tracks for GPL, go drive 'round Michigan in N4
and then do it in GPL. Fill the F1 Eagle up with gas and do some laps.
Hmmmm. So much for GPL being too hard. The lap times are within a second
of each other, and I personally think the F1 car's actually easier to drive
than the Stocker, probably due to it being lighter and more responsive. The
F1's quicker through the corners and slower down the straights, which makes
perfect sense given the comparative weight, power, and drag numbers. The
Stocker's relatively cumbersome and rightly feels like it has a lot more
momentum, but the tires' conversation with the asphalt seems VERY similar to
GPL. Methinks the N2-3 crowd's got some learnin' to do! But forget these
bloody ovals; bring on the converter and the Touring Car Patch! A sub-9 at
the Ring in these beasts should be interesting.
Since this is the first opportunity to compare Papy's and MGI's physics
models heads-up, I did some laps back to back in N4 and NH. Even tried
duplicate setups, or as close as possible. My Michigan setup from NH was
balanced and drove fairly well in N4, but quickly cooked the tires. N4
apparently needs much higher pressures. Lap times in NH were quicker and
easier to do, but still had a very nice "feel". MGI did a really good job,
physics-wise, IMHO. The NH car is less "edgy" and responds more fluidly,
but still does what you expect a car to do. In particular, I think NH gets
things "righter" in how the difficulty increases the closer you get to the
limit. Slow=easy, fast=hard! :-)
One big difference was car behavior down on the apron. NH doesn't like that
at ALL, of course, while Papy lets you just hammer it down there. And it's
not just N4. You can get down there without much drama in GPL, too. Maybe
Papy's a bit too forgiving of apron-riding, but I think NH overdid this
aspect a bit. The real guys are always getting wheels below the line
without coming to grief.
As for the left-pulling bit everyone complains about, yeah they should do
that given the oval setups, but N4 seems a little weird here. To check, I
made a totally neutral, symmetrical setup and drove a steady speed down the
flat, straight pit lane. It STILL required right lock to go straight. That
shouldn't be, unless all oval setups have default, unchangeable stagger. I
also drove backwards on the track with this neutral setup, which should've
brought on the opposite behavior, but didn't. Still had to turn right a bit
to go straight. This with a properly calibrated and functioning Logitech
Wingman wheel (non-ff). Something seems a bit off here.
Speaking of things a bit off, if you stop on the banking, the car slides
sideways down the track. Hold the brake and it stays put, let it off and
down you go. Not rolling, mind you; sliding. Perfectly sideways.
Something odd going on there. I think GPL did this too.
Knowing Papy's track record, no doubt by February most if not all will be
sorted, and the multiplayer will surely be excellent, but my heart's still
on hold for WSC. Hope they get the NEW Panoz in there.
Cheers,
Steve B.
So my point about a default non-adjustable stagger for oval setups was
right, then. That makes sense. Thanks; I can stop driving backwards now!

Are those hanging or dimpled splitters? It depends, you see. One pulls to
the right, the other to the left.
Caster splitters and track bars; are these the differential ramp angles for
2001? The mind reels...
Cheers,
Steve B.
I pretty much agree with all you have said. I tend to like the driving
better in Heat. The racing is another story.

the oval setups included default stagger since it's not shown in the garage
settings. If there weren't, then setting everything up neutral should've
eliminated the left pull, so that the banking on the straights would
determine which way the car tends to drift. That's why running backward
would've mattered. But there IS stagger, it seems, so the tendency would be
lessened.
Since it's IN THE GAME(sorry, EA), I wonder what the default stagger is, and
if it differs by track?

With a fast loose setup you don't want to hit the apron the wrong way in
N4 either, you'll be sol. But you can still hit them a little if you are
careful. Remember Dale Jr this year on the apron at Dega or Daytona(?)
with a few laps to go? That was a huge transition and he must have been
going 170+mph when re-entering the banking.
You can hit the apron all day with the default setups in N4 because
they are tighter then hell. If I remember the default setups for the gpl
demo were crap as well. They probably do that so newbie's don't get
frustrated by spinning in every turn.

Steve, it is very likely they are running debug code in the demo.
Expect much better performance in the final release. This is normal.
Nice observations by the way they mirror my own impressions so
far.

The old dat-files were only packed... these new once on the other hand, are
also compressed - whilch again also adds more load times as the came must
"un-zip" it (into memory?)
So in reality the new dat's are probably 4-8 times bigger than the old
Dat's - depending upon the compression ratio they achive.

Electronic Arts, "If it's in the game, it's in the game." All their
sports titles say this at the beginning of starting the game.
I believe in Nascar (the real one) stagger is set at each track by
NASCAR. They tell you what size tires to run - it's no longer a
tweakable option by the real teams.
and the sound in the demo sucks. I've done the Richard Petty driving
experience at Lowe's and the sound in the demo sucks. It's a loud,
unmuffled, rippling V8. Not a sewing machine/F1/blender type sound.
And the tires - who took my slicks and replaced them with hockey pucks?
The steering in those things is firm - like a full size go-kart. Not
all loosey-goosey like the demo.
Lastly, the interior and dash - how about a digitized image instead of
rendered? Would look more real, and the gauges still aren't tweakable.
keeping fingers crossed they get this ironed out in the final version.
I do have to say playing Nascar, Nascar2, Nascar99 and Nascar3 did help
driving the real thing. :)
