NASCAR 4 demo frame rates on various hardware

One user reported poor NASCAR 4 demo frame rates on a Voodoo5, while most others reported smooth performance on GeForce and Voodoo3 systems and advised checking drivers, using 16-bit color and trying Direct3D. The poster improved results by resolving IRQ sharing under Windows ME, which led to a debate about ME's suitability for gaming.

there's something wrong with your setup. on my celeron 2 566@875 (the $85 chip) with a GeForce2MX (the $100 card) i get 46-51 fps at 1084x768x16 and 27-34fps at 1084x768x32. i'm using dx8 and winME. it looks absolutely teriffic! and very smooth. maybe it's the voodoo card...those things have kinda been passed by in the tech. race, no? pick up a GeForce (or maybe a Radeon). I'd take a hard look at the drivers for your V5 or something- My lowly setup(Duron 750/128MB/GeForce 2 32MB) gets 50-55 fps at 1024x768 with everything maxed,2x2 FSAA using OpenGL. Hopefully the D3D renderer isn't that much worse than OGL- but I guess it could be. I certainly haven't experienced any of the problems you mentioned, and haven't seen too many other complaints- but I've mostly spoken to guys using OGL. Sorry you're having problems- you're missing a pivotal moment in racing sims, almost on a par with the release of GPL. > > This from a lowely 1024x768x16(colour depth) > > And with only 1 car on the track! > > What is worse, despite the above frame rates the outside graphics appearto > step across the screen when turning. Sorry people but on my P3/800 + V5500 it's just plain aweful! As I drive GPL with excellent results (2xFSAA at 1026x768 constant 36fps) from my system I know it's not my system. Dx8 (no openGL driver for V5500) Frame Rate 4xFSAA 13-18 Frame Rate 2xFSAA 22 - 38 Frame Rate noFSAA 34 - 42 This from a lowely 1024x768x16(colour depth) And with only 1 car on the track! What is worse, despite the above frame rates the outside graphics appear to step across the screen when turning. This is hard on the eyes and distracts from being able to drive well. On each incarnation of Nascar the outside view becomes smaller. I get the sense that I am now driving from the rear seat. Looking at real life footage of drivers behind the wheel, they are almost cramped up against it which means that they hardly see the wheel while driving. More outside view would allow better driving judgement. I think the smaller view is probably there to help frame rate. Well guys (and gals) it aint working! Won't be buying this. Will put up with the crap A1 of Nascar Heat (excellent frame rate and full field) Alan

Actually I had a10 fps _increase_ with D3D as opposed to OGL (TNT2 Ultra on a celeron @450/128MB), so the D3D renderer isn't bad at all! OGL looked a bit nicer, though, D3D looks a bit washed out in comparison. > > More outside view would allow better driving judgement. You'll get a better framerate with the outside views, with no cockpit on the way. Rendering the cockpit increases the load of the system, not vice-versa. Remember that this is a full moving 3D cockpit, not a static 2D sprite as the cocpits used to be in the old days. Whatever the reasons for Papy are for deciding the size of the cockpit view, they are not framerate related. My only actual complaint of the demo (and the game) is that I don't like Nascar. :P Jussi

Something hasto be wrong on your end. Even my celeron 300a o/c 378 or whatever it is, 64mb ram and a voodoo3 2000 runs 800x600x32 and never drops below 26fps.. not super high fps, but doesnt sound much worse than yours :). The readme says: 16-BIT VS. 32-BIT COLOR Because of the large amount of textures used in NASCAR 4, it is recommended that 32-bit color only be used on video cards with 64 MB or more texture memory. Note that even for 64 MB cards 16-bit color will likely result in significantly better performance. Hope this helps Luke -=87=- Alan Coates <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:K3eV5.1669$[email hidden]...

Thanks for all your replies, but as I said GPL & Nascar Heat rocks and so does all other games I play. I get everthing I expect form my 'puter, except N4! Incidently I have ME and Dx8 and all my drivers are bang up to date. No other probs like sound/video sharing same IRQ etc. As I work as a Network Administrator I would know if my system wasn't top notch. So again, N4 is out on its own for being the only black sheep on my system. Regards all, Alan

Well, on my P3-650 with a GeForce2 gts in 1024*768*16-bit (D3D) I get 55-60 fps most of the time. Sometimes it goes down to 45, sometimes up to 70. And that's with *everything* on full. No complaints here. The engine seems as fast as anything i've seen. It's only a pre-alpha technology demo afterall. Maybe compatibility will be improved by the full release. Looks like the game has issues with the V5. Have you tried the GP3 fix thing of setting single-chip instead of fastest-performance (i know that bug was supposed to be fixed in the last drivers, but hey, it's worth checking). And of course, make sure you have the latest drivers. One other thing, I'm still using DX7, and N4 is DX7 code, but using dx8 shouldn't cause a problem really. Don't bother explaining your hardware setup and excellent framerates. This is an alpha version...you know, what hasbro released as a finished version with Nascar Heat. There are those who simply will not admit N4's superiority over Nascar Heat, and will miss out on a lot of great fun by passing over N4 while they continue to Beat the Mheat. Well, seeing as we can only run tests in N4 and we don't know if the NH patch that is supposed to be released one of these days is going to be good or not. I'm still not decided on which is going to be my choice for Nascar racing. So far I like the look and feel of the cars in NH better. But, it falls short in other areas. N4 feels a little too squirrelly to me and I don't like the cockpit view either. But, it is alpha so will have to wait to see if this is improved or not.

Not to criticize(spelling??) you Alan, But I've run into more than one of network system type guys who totally screwed up their computers for gaming. hehehe But I believe you when you say you know what your doing. So next we have to try isolating the cause of the slowdown. Try turning off the sound first in N4 and then if that doesn't help, turn off any 3d sound you may have enabled in windows itself. (I'm hoping ME has the same style as SE) we'll go from there...good luck! dave henrie "Alan Coates" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:iGhV5.1765$[email hidden]...

You sadden me, Mr Wheatley. And I thought you were a mature character. However I have managed to improve frame rate. It's strange how Widows ME is quite happy to allow IRQ sharing between the adapters! ME wouldn't let me change the IRQ settings in software (or bios) but by jiggling between different PCI slots with the sound adapter I managed to get a different IRQ and this improved things no end. I'll say it again as I've said in a previous post. Dx8 to speed games up ME to slow them down! I remember the days when a user had complete autonomy over IRQ settings. Windows is not improving, just becoming too rigid and intransigent. One last point, N3 was never released in the UK and as N4 is unlikely to be its all become quite academic. ME may well be better for gaming, but only after you undo all the silly things that ME does by default when you first install it. I know for a fact that a lot of people haven't got either the skill or the bottle (or both) to hack around their shiny new operating system, so either they: a. put up with it b. pay a lot of cash for expert help or b. give up Despite the fact that microsoft make more money from the 'home' industry it's suprising that Windows tends to default more towards business use. I think there is still a strange snobery about computers being serious use objects. HaHa, what a joke! Alan
Might be just me, but those who are afraid to do that, can't expect to get the best out of their system anyway - EVER, because it's impossible to with default settings. -- [email hidden] www.legendscentral.com "Alan Coates" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:6YAV5.3041$[email hidden]... > See comments below:- > > "Amp" <[email hidden]> wrote in message > news:[email hidden]... > > On Thu, 30 Nov 2000 19:53:56 -0000, "Tim Wheatley" > > <[email hidden]> thus spoke: > > > > >ME is better for gaming when you configure it properly, easily. > > > > Why? It still reports 40 - 45fps though on my Athlon 910/V3 3000/DX8 setup Maybe it's a Voodoo/DX8 issue? Cheers, Steve
Funny, the N4 demo works fine (well, the sound doesn't!) in my VERY modest system PII350, 64Mb, Voodoo 2, 8Mb!! Arto PS What to do with the "not progressive" sound? The throttle seems to affect to the sound nearly "on-off" way. Acceleration seems to be natural and "progressive", though...

I disagree with that 100%. I'm using windows ME on my other PC, I have no driver problems and the system is more stable than 98se which I have on this PC (though that hardly crashes anyway). As for gaming, if you turn off the system restore facility it works just fine for games, framerates are stable and I don't get any system pauses. Only thing I've noticed is some programs seem to take a second or two before they start loading. -- Ian P <email invalid due to spam> Larry <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:okOc6.60101$[email hidden]... > I disagree 100%. > > I won't even get into the stability and driver problems... > > There is too much going on in the background with WinME. The background stuff can easily be disabled by anyone who has half an idea what they are doing. The quick startup, thumbnail view and improved network stability are worth the price of upgrade. ~daxe

Try the following steps to improve WinMe performance. I got this in an email a while back "Optimizing Windows Millennium 10 modifications that I have made to Windows ME to gain SIGNIFICANT increase in speed, performance and security. I have tested these settings for over a month and haven't encountered any problems. After applying these tweaks and rebooting the free resources are 99%. Before you decide you actually want to give up these features for the extra speed you should read this page. http://www.microsoft.com/PressPass/features/2000/sept00/09-05winme.asp Keep in mind that the developers and testers for these features never encountered a worm or trojan or they may have found that PC Health and Restore will reinstall a trojan because it wants to take you back to the previous state before your "cleaning" modifications were made. Their ideas are good but unfortunately they didn't take these problems into account. It's also obvious they use very fast computers and didn't notice the deterioration of speed (compared to 9x) with all these features turned on. 1. Disable System Restore. Open Control Panel -> System -> Performance Tab -> File System - > Troubleshooting area -> Disable System Restore (While you are in this window click on the Floppy Disk tab and uncheck the box so the system doesn't check for a NEW floppy drive every time it starts.) ~~ 2. Uninstall Pc Health. Start / Run "\windows\pchealth\support\pchsetup /uninstall" ~~ 3. Turn off Automatic Updating. (This will hog your modem for 30 mins every day when you first go on line if you don't turn it off.) Start / Settings / Taskbar / Advanced then check Expand Control Panel and close and go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Automatic Updates and turn OFF Automatic Updating ~~ 4. Use ram memory rather than the swap file. (The system needs OVER 64 megs of ram.) Start / Search / Files type and enter: "system.ini" then click on it and open it in Notepad and add this line after [386Enh] (without quotes) "ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" ~~ 5. Set file system to cache about 20 times higher than its default setting. Copy and paste these lines to Notepad and name the file MaxCached.reg then click on MaxCached.reg from Windows Explorer and say Yes you want to add that information to your registry. (You must set Notepad to "all files" when you save it or it will save as text.) -------------------------------- copy below ---------------------------------- REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates] @="Max Cache" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FS Templates\Max Cache] @="Max Cache" "NameCache"=hex:00,18,00,00 "PathCache"=hex:80,00,00,00 ------------------------------- to above ------------------------------------ ~~ 6. Disable these settings in the start menu. Start / Run type and enter: "Msconfig" then click on Startup and UNCHECK PcHealth, StateMgr, SchedulingAgent and Taskmon Then allow the system to reboot so all these changes will take effect. ~~ 7. Run Windows Explorer and click on Tools / Folder Options / View and select "Show hidden files and folders" then browse the c: drive and delete the _Restore folder. Hold your shift key so it doesn't move it to the recycle bin while you press del. This folder can have hundreds of megs of temp files if you have been running ME for a while with the system Restore and PC Health on. If you get an error message saying there is a sharing violation you haven't successfully turned off Pc Health and Restore. The _Restore folder should NOT appears again in the future (unless you update a key Microsoft program like IE). ~~ 8. See if anything unnecessary is running all the time. Press CTRL + ALT + DEl at the same time, after you have first booted up and see what programs are loaded. You may find several programs running that don't need to run all the time. Most of them, if actually needed, can be loaded from the Start / Programs menu. ~~ 9. Don't let windows run HTA, SHS and VBS Script automatically. Those file associations allow viruses to infect your system. Open Windows Explorer and click Tools / Folder Options / File Types and delete HTA, SHS and VBSscript. It is very unlikely a normal PC user would need those file associations turned on. ~~ 10. Disable "Automatic check for Windows Explorer updates" From the IE "Tools" menu click on "Internet Options" then go to "Advanced" and uncheck the 4th box. EVERY week back up modified files, defrag the system and update the definitions and scan the whole system with your favorite anti-viral program. Run Ad-Aware to fight the spying that a least 100 programs are known to do. (I do this mainly to save the baud width wasted by the data and banner ads that are passing back and forth.) I also manually load ZoneAlarm Pro. from time to time to monitor all programs and report everything that tries to access the internet. I don't like programs "calling home" without my permission. Note: Win ME does not use c:\command.com or win.com. I have found that deleting these files - that are NECESSARY for Win 9x - does not make a difference for ME." I used these and didnt notice a heap of difference, but my machine has had windows installation over the top of another - needs a good format. Im going to stop using ME and switch full to 2000 when I have the time. Pete "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:okOc6.60101$[email hidden]...
