Here are a couple of shots worth comparing:
NASCAR Heat in-car view:
http://www.3dfiles.com/cgi-bin/screenshot.cgi?n/nascarheat2b.jpg
NASCAR 4 in-car view:
http://www.3dfiles.com/cgi-bin/screenshot.cgi?n/nascar42b.jpg
I like Papy's crisp graphics, but I've never had any problem with the
way things look in NASCAR Heat (I also wonder if the Heat screen shot
was taken with the graphic details scaled back a bit?). One thing that
I really don't like about either one is how claustrophobic the cockpit
views are -- N4 is worse, with less windshield area available to show
you the actual track. For me, a 17" monitor is claustrophobic enough
all by itself, and -- call me crazy -- I really do prefer
driving/racing simulations over cockpit simulations.
Yeah, I know -- it really IS claustrophobic inside a stock car. Even
so, the windshield in real-life still offers the driver a lot more
viewable real estate than we can achieve achieve even on a 21" monitor
using either of these two cockpit views, AND the driver also has the
luxury of peripheral vision as well.
Bumper-cams are insufficient, IMO, but in-cockpit views like this are
overkill as far as I'm concerned. From what I've seen, the cockpit
view in the Dreamcast "Ferrari 355 Challenge" game looks like a much
better approach to me.
Still, between the N4 and Heat, I'd have to say that N4 wins out over
Heat in the cockpit simulation war. Too bad I can't tell how it
drives -- the screen shots caused my claustrophobia to flare up again,
so I'm going to have do some therapy laps in F1 2000 until it subsides.

So, the topic is "cockpit views" -- talk amongst yourselves . . .

Actually, they're not my screen shots -- they're both from the 3dfiles
site. I just noticed the N4 screen shot there when I went for the N4
download, so I went searching through their other download archives to
see if they had a similar shot of the Heat cockpit (which they did). I
agree that it is a pretty poor Heat shot -- I know that it looks much
better on my system, anyway.

Here's some better comparison shots..

I like the Heat cockpit.

That Heat shot must be from a beta or something. Looks almost nothing
like the retail game on a good video card at 1024x768 or so.

Good Job!! That looks a lot more like what I'm used to seeing. After having
tried the Nascar 4 Alpha, I think I prefer the look and feel of Nascar Heat.
Nascar 4 makes me feel like I'm in the back seat of the car. Maybe it's just
because I'm used to NH but it does seem a little cramped and far way. The
car was also twitchy as hell with all the aids off. The thing that appealed
to me about NH was that the car was driveable without spending every waking
moment practicing. I may sound like a heretic, but that's what I hated about
GPL. If only they can fix the AI issues (crashing under yellow and never
crashing during green : ) NH might be a serious challenger to Papy's throne.
Now if only MGI would create a CART game with that engine!!!!

I like the N4 better just because the gauges are set in their realistic
positions.

Actually all the cars don't have 1 set position for the gauges, and
most just go in a straight line across the dash.
Which wouldn't work well for computer monitors.
The Heat cockpit is loosely based off Bobby Labonte's Cockpit.
